EUROPEAN Tour stars David Lynnand Richard Bland took time out of theirbusy schedules to help Chester GolfClub’s Scott Booth mark the grand re-opening of his pro shop.

The pair entertained the crowds withan exhibition of driving, chipping andputting before escaping the rain for aQ&A session in the clubhouse.

Scott said: “One of the changes in theshop has been the introduction of a newTaylorMade stand and as TaylorMadecontracted players we were able to getthem here through them.

“David travelled over from Hull andRichard flew up from Southampton so itwas really good of them both to come.”

Lynn, the runner-up in this year’s USPGA Championship, and Bland, who lastmonth had top 20 finishes in the BMWItalian Open and the KLM Open, hitsome of Scott’s old, small headed driversand three woods from when he was a jun-ior and then illustrated the improvementin technology by hitting the latest Taylor-Made drivers.

“I certainly found it really informative,”said Scott, the former Cheadle pro. “Iknow the many members that were thereto see them did too.”

The event took place on the back of a

TaylorMade Demo Week at the CurzonPark club. “The response to that was phe-nomenal,” added Scott. “We had sevenbags full of TaylorMade kit from drivers, fairway woods and irons and membersand non-members came in numbers to

try them out – many of them going on tomake a purchase.

“I didn’t know what to expect as it wasthe first time I hadtried to do anythinglike this, but I’m now

hoping to maybe do something similarnext year when the next new products arelaunched.”

Conwy in the articleabove

WESTWOOD’S COACH BOWLEDOVER BY CONWY COURSELEE Westwood’s putting coach, TonyJohnstone, led a chorus of praise for thecourse at Conwy Golf Club after theNorth Wales club played host to theSpeedy Services Wales Seniors Open forthe third time in six years this summer.Won by England’s Barry Lane on

seven-under-par, the event was watchedby large, enthusiastic crowds over the Au-gust Bank holiday weekend, as well as bythose watching the highlights on SkySports. With a high-quality field – includ-ing three former Ryder Cup captains inIan Woosnam, Sam Torrance and MarkJames – the 6,903-yard par 72 courseproved a fitting test for the cream of Eu-rope’s senior players.Three of the top fourfrom this season’s Senior Order of Merit– Lane, Australia’s Peter Fowler, andSweden’s Anders Forsbrand – finished inthe top four at Conwy, with England’sPhilip Golding taking second place aheadof Forsbrand and Fowler.Mark Mouland was the leading

Welshman in tied fifth at three-under.Woosnam came second at Conwy in2008 but his quest for a first Wales Sen-iors title ended in disappointment afterhe fell away in the final round despite en-couragement from the crowds.

The challenge, presentation and condi-tion of the course all came in for lavishpraise from players, officials and specta-tors, while EuropeanTour representativescommended club staff for their work aftera summer of disappointing weather. Inhis victory speech, Lane complimentedthe club on the excellent course presen-tation.Second-placed Golding, who turned

50 earlier this year and was only playingin his fourth senior event, had led afterthe first round with a course record-equalling 64, including a European Sen-ior Tour record of eight consecutivebirdies from the ninth hole. “It is a coursewhere you have to think off the tee,” hesaid. “You can’t hit a driver everywhere. It’s a great course. Every hole makes youthink and the greens were in fantasticcondition.”Running at the Stimpmeter speed re-

quested by the tour of between 10.5 and11.0 each day, the putting surfaces pro-vided the perfect test for the skills of theplayers.Echoing the thoughts of many ofhis fellow players, Forsbrand said: “It’s agreat golf course. You have to focus onevery single shot.”However, even these comments were

surpassed by those of Sky Sports golf pun-dit and renowned putting and short-game expert Johnstone, who said: “Thosewere the finest greens I’ve ever putted on.”Johnstone was recently appointed puttingand short-game coach to former worldnumber one Westwood and is acknowl-edged as one of the finest putters of hisgeneration, having won six times on themain European Tour.He finished in sev-enth position at Conwy.

Conwy is the NorthWales coast’s pre-mier Championship links course, notonly hosting the Wales Seniors Openthree times in the last six years, but alsothe Wales Ladies Open on the LadiesEuropean Tour in 2010, the EuropeanAmateur Men’s Team Championships in2009, and Final Qualifying for the OpenChampionship in 2006, when it becamethe first (and to date only) course inWales to host that event.

The stunning Conwy course was heaped with praise following the European SeniorTour’s visit.

OLYMPIC bronze medallist BethTweddle may have given up her high-fly-ing bars routine but she appears deter-mined to try other sporting pursuits.

The Cheshire-based Johannesburg-born gymnast has already sampled a dif-ferent kind of adrenaline rush since herheroics at London 2012 by aerobaticswing walking.

But she came down to earth when shewas given the opportunity to chance toher arm at golf.

Beth, who is approaching the end ofher athletics career, was invited to showoff her medal at the pavilion and exhibi-tion area at Royal Liverpool last monthduring the RicohWomen’s British Open.

“It was all decked out in red, white andblue to celebrate the Best of British and Igave her a lesson,” said John Heggarty, head professional at the Hoylake-basedclub.

“She said she hadn’t played before butshe enjoyed it and hit the ball well, which

did not surprise me. She had great hand-eye ball co-ordination but I don’t know ifshe’ll take up the game. She’d certainlymake a competent player.”

Heggarty was also involved in a RedDoor Events promotion which specialisesin golf initiatives.

“IMG are contracted to them andwhenever there are any coaching require-ments they bring in their own profession-als. I wanted to make sure they camefrom the North Region so invited five,”he said.

“They were Karen Heywood, SarahWalton, Clare Brown, James Garner andDavid McKinnon who worked in the re-tail area, which I ran, the exhibition cen-tre and VIP simulating zone in Ricoh’shospitality pavilion.”

He added: “The whole event was ab-solutely fantastic and much bigger than Iexpected.” Royal Liverpool head pro John Heggarty helps BethTweddle to get a grip. Photo by Getty Images.

NORTH West golfers in search of avalue-for-money game are visiting aSouth Cheshire course in their drovesafter a quartet of local businessmen haveturned around the fortunes of the San-bach-based club.Designed by renowned golf course ar-

chitects Hawtree Limited,Malkins BankGolf Club opened in 1976, but in Octo-ber, 2011 RM Estates Ltd took over therunning of the course. The RM Estates team consists of

Robert Mayor and Jon Stubbs, KevinRead, a chartered surveyor, and TonyMinshall, a former European Tour proand previous director of Hill Valley Golf& Country Club, Whitchurch, for 38years before the merger with MacdonaldHotels in November, 2003.They joined forces with the aim of util-

ising their expertise to develop the alreadymature, tree-lined course into one of thefinest of its kind in the North West –something they are well on their way toachieving in less than 12 months. The most obvious changes in recent

months are the re-vamped and vastly im-proved clubhouse, which opened lastmonth, and a re-numbering of the holes –the previous front nine now forming theclosing nine holes so that the new 18th(formerly the ninth) is situated in frontof the impressive new bar and restaurantfacility that features a glass roof and ve-randa.The front nine, which now starts with

a par three, boasts two of the best holesin the area.Hole four is the most challenging tee

shot of the entire course as the fairwayslopes from left to right with a stream tocatch any wayward tee shots to the rightand out of bounds down the left. The ap-proach to this well-guarded green needsto be straight down the centre of the fair-way resisting the temptation to attack thepin.Malkins Bank’s signature hole is the

par three fifth, a picturesque but decep-tively difficult test as there is a tree ob-structing the green together with a deepbunker on the right. It was here lastmonth lady member Sally Basford man-aged to avoid both the tree and the sandtrap to notch a memorable hole-in-one.Stand out holes on the second nine in-

clude the 13th, a risk and reward holewhere those brave and skilled enough totake on the 180-yard carry over a ditchwill face just a short pitch into the green. The par five 16th is another beauty and

plans are in the pipeline to create a newChampionship tee set back a further 50yards into the hillside behind. It’s easy to see how former Ryder Cup

captain and US Masters winner IanWoosnam was impressed with the set-upwhen he played a special exhibitionmatch with three-time European Tourwinner Peter Baker against Malkins Bank

TYTHERINGTON PAIR MAKEIT A FIRST FOR CHESHIRETYTHERINGTON’S Janet Ions andJean Halligan are England’s AustralianSpoons champions – and the first part-nership from Cheshire to capture the tro-phy.The pair won a tight tussle for theSpoons at the national final at EastDevon Golf Club.“It was very close,” said Janet. “Ourplaying partners were ahead of us all theway and we pipped them on the last hole, where we got three points and they gotone.”This is their biggest win in golf and, asJean said: “It’s lovely.” Janet added: “It’sgreat and a big shock, a real surprise!”The Stableford foursomes competition

is contested by players with handicaps of21 and over and the national finalists –who each represented one of EnglandGolf ’s women’s regions – had comethrough club and regional qualifyingrounds.Janet, who has been playing golf onlyfour years, has a handicap of 26 – and hadbeen cut by two in the run-up to the final– while Jean is a 29 handicapper. The pair, who represented the NorthRegion, closely examined the trophy todiscover they were the first winners fromCheshire. They scored 31 points on the scenicand challenging clifftop course whichfeatures some very demanding greens.

BRONTE STARSATHOYLAKETHE Ricoh Women’s British Open atRoyal Liverpool saw the world’s top ladygolfers having to show their adaptability, courage and endurance as well as theirnatural talent as they battled with theworst of the elements that this so-calledsummer has provided us with.

But one of the shining lights from ourregion was 17-year-old amateur BronteLaw from Bramhall who brought greatcredit to herself with a superb perform-ance that saw her finish in a very cred-itable 33rd spot with rounds of 75, 71, 77and 77 to see her leave many of theworld’s top players in her wake.

Bronte has already enjoyed success in2012 with the highlights being a part ofthe GB and I Curtis Cup team, who wonthe trophy for the first time in 16 years, and selection for the European JuniorRyder Cup team.

She was the top amateur qualifier atCaldy to earn her slot in the final ‘major’and more than justified herself.

Bronte was delighted to be drawn withtwo of the game’s legends in Julie Inksterand Carin Koch for the first two roundsand was not overawed by their presenceand indeed gained inspiration from them.

Bronte said: “It was an amazing expe-rience and it reinforced my dreams ofbeing a professional golfer.

“I met so many amazing people overthe week who I have always looked up toas professional golfers and aspired to belike.

“And to be able to be in their companyand talk to them was just incredible.

“I first went to watch the Women’sBritish Open at Royal Lytham when An-nika Sorenstam won and since then Ihave dreamed of playing in the event andbeing a professional golfer.

“It shows that if you work hard you willachieve your dreams and I can’t wait tostart my winter programme to get readyfor next year and to improve in all areas tokeep striving to be the best I can.

“My plan for Royal Liverpool was tohave my short game at its best as I knewthat I could not match the top players fordistance, and the extra work I put intothis part of my game certainly paid divi-dends.

“Julie and Carin were both veryfriendly and helpful and it was a real

pleasure to play with them.”Another local player enjoying the ex-

perience was English U18 championEmily Taylor, from Hillside who just

missed the cut by two shots after roundsof 75 and 76 but, like Bronte, enjoyed theexperience of playing alongside LadiesEuropean Tour legend Laura Davies and

Carlota Cigande for two rounds.Royal Birkdale’s Florentyna Parker fin-

ished in 55th to earn €7,430.88 afterrounds of 77, 72, 76 and 81.

WEAREnowpast the end of the ‘sum-mer’ playing season, which as stated inmany previous articles, has been a totalwashout this year. Many of us have experienced some

formof depression during this time andthis has exaggerated the negative com-ments that have often accompanied thisperiod. The common statement that can be

heard in many golf club car parks is‘thank goodness it will soon be winter’,unfortunately this I feel could be awishthat is a little premature. The hope that September would

bring an ‘Indian Summer’ has not ma-terialised and the ground has remainedin a saturated state, this if anything, canonly get worse as the ground will soononly rely on land drainage.Through the summer the grass and

trees have a great capacity in the uptakeof water during transpiration and this, coupled with evaporation, also aids inthe drainage of land being quicker. The fact the evaporation and transpi-

ration is now reducing as the trees shedtheir leaves and the growing seasondraws to a close means the land will re-main wet longer. This will affect thewinter golfing season and it could in-fringe on the day-to-day running of thegolf course. No greenkeeper enjoys having to put

up the dreaded ‘course closed’ sign, butthis winter could see the highest closurerate for many years. This is only done during times of ex-

treme conditions and for the protectionof the course and also in the currentsafety market, the protection of thegolfing public.A course will, in theory, be more

likely to close during December andJanuary than the months of Februaryand March, even if the conditions ap-peared to be identical. This is due to thefact the recovery rate in February andMarch is likely to be quicker as onewould hope that spring was just roundthe corner. There aremany things golfers can do

to assist the greenkeeper inmaking thedecision as to close or not.If the golfer is too selfish and only

wants their own needs catered for thegreenkeeper is forced tomake the deci-sions for them with protection of thecourse being a priority, however ifgolfers observe a few points of courtesythe course will remain open on occa-sions as the greenkeeper will observethe help being given.Such observations as, the use of

paths whenever available, not climbingover the fences which protect areas ofthe course, observing notices and paintlines on the course to aid in reducingmuddy areas, avoiding areas susceptibleto churning up rather than standing inthem.Whenever possible carry a half set of

clubs rather than dragging heavy trol-leys and not using electric trolleys orride on buggies when weather andground conditions dictate. These are just a few suggestions that

if observed help the course tolerate thewinter traffic. Perhaps in times of poorconditions three club comps could beplayed or even a greensome formatcould be introduced to reduce wear onthe course. The closed course is never a popular

decision but is one that sometimes isinevitable. The old statement of ‘thatyou can please some people some of thetime but not everyone all of the time’does not it would appear ring true ingolf, for the greenkeeper it is more acase of ‘you can’t please some golfers butyou can certainly upset them all’!Finally, this year, according to the

statistics, has been the wettest for 100years and is approaching the wettestsummer since records began. These being the facts I offermy com-

pliments to my colleagues who fre-quently feel down from the derogatorycomments of this year and suggest that;Yes the summer has been so disappoint-ing, yet we havemanaged to prepare ourcourses to be able to host all competi-tions, limited the closure to a mini-mum, prepared greens that have playedall summer and done this in the worstpossible conditions, could this then beour finest achievement rather than thedepressing spin that is frequently be-stowed on us?

THREECOURSESPECIAL

side the castle itself and next door to oneof Ireland’s best known character pubs,Durty Nellies.

Forget any imitators. This is the origi-nal Durty Nellies and dates back to 1620.

You can pull your own pint, you canchoose between several bars and restau-rants, but you can’t bottle that unique at-mosphere and take it home.

More’s the pity, so it’s as well to forgetyour inhibitions, sing along with the livemusic, sink a Guinness or two and won-der why our near-neighbours always seemto have so much fun when they go out forthe night.

You can lunch at Durty Nellies for lessthan £10, or take a dinner option withwine for around £25, but don’t drive past.

could play in the monthly “open” on aMonday for around £25 – top value for atop quality golf course with really lavishfacilities on hand.

Our third course this trip was the onewhere I actually won the money, so it can’tbe too difficult! It was Dromoland Castleat Newmarket on Fergus, a course theydescribe as “the Augusta of Ireland”.

That might be overdoing it a little, butfive million euros have been spent overthe last few years upgrading DromolandCastle (which first opened in 1962) intoa very fine course which complements theexclusive Dromoland Castle hotel.

A golf stay there would be a rare treat, but we were very happy with our base,Bunratty Castle Hotel, which sits along-

I DO envy links golfers. They are in lovewith the purest form of the sport. Theycan shape their shots; pitch and run theball to any given distance and keep itbelow the wind when needed.

Not me. I am used to hitting the ballhigh, so that it goes over the trees that toooften block the way between my erranttee shot and the green.

A useful skill at a parkland course.Ab-solutely useless on a seaside links with thewind blowing hard off the ocean.

Which is why I stood nervously on thetee of the 14th hole at the Greg Norman-designed Doonbeg course in Ireland.

I should have been enjoying the fabu-lous West Coast scenery, or the thrill ofplaying a links course designated Euro-pean Golf Resort of the Year in 2010.

Instead I was nervously contemplatingthe 95 yards from tee to green straightover the Atlantic Ocean knowing I hadonly three more golf balls in the bag.

One minute later came a big sigh of re-lief, as my wedge shot hit high out to seawas safely blown back by the wind and onto the green.

Four holes to play and three balls toplay them with. At last, I could relax!

And what a place to relax in.Doonbeg’s links course may be as close

to nature as can be – 12 of its fairwaysneeded only the mower to complete thecourse designer’s job – but the resort itselfis built to the most demanding standardsof comfort and luxury.

It was the planned highlight of our an-nual three-course break in Ireland.

It’s a trip that never disappoints, as theunique atmosphere of Ireland’s golf clubs, pubs and restaurants soon helps you getover any self-inflicted disappointmentswith ball and club.

This year we settled on County Clareas a base, which meant we could reach thewest coast within an hour but still get toand from Dublin via the toll roads inaround two hours. It proved a greatchoice, with the unexpected bonus ofwatching weather forecasts of torrentialrain in the UK but dry weather in Ireland.

Happily for me, our other two courseswere both parkland, which saved mightilyon both golf balls and pride.

It was a moving experience to return toour second course The Heritage at Kil-lenard, County Laois. The late, great SeveBallesteros was involved in the design anddevelopment here and his statue standsproudly in front of the opulent clubhouseas a reminder of one of the most charis-matic golfers ever to grace the game.

I say “development” because The Her-itage is not just a great golf course. It alsofeatures a range of places to stay and othersports facilities including outdoor and in-door bowling greens.

Prices at the Heritage will always de-pend on the time of the year and day ofthe week, but like many other Irish golfclubs it is worth looking out for “opendays” when green fees are low. Here you

This month JOHN GEE reports on his recent annualthree-course break in Ireland.Photos byKEN DONE.

There is nowhere else quite like it.A final word on how Ireland is coping

with the recession. It would be wrong tomake light of the challenges facing thecountry, but the tourist is all the morewelcome for that, and everywhere thereare special deals on offer to tempt you in.

Add to that the current strength of thepound against the Euro and it made ourtrip better value than for several yearspast.

IF RESILIENCE and determinationare bywords for success, then Jiyai Shin, after her runaway victory in the LadiesOpen at Hoylake last month, might beregarded as the epitome of ‘cool’.Given that this field represented the

cream of women’s golf, her demolitionjob was all the more impressive. It istrue that whilst there I heard only threeor four topics of conversation: wherewere theBrits? Jiyai Shin’s extraordinaryconsistency; Paula Creamer’s crowdpleasing ‘dressed-for-the-disco’ attire(well, the chaps were pleased at anyrate); and, of course, the weather; thegood old British weather. How MissShin held her game together, repeatedly,in the teeth of numerous squalls thatbrought lashing, horizontal rain, defiedbelief. How strange, too, that theBritishcontingent couldn’tmake a better fist ofhandling the conditions.Unlike those who recorded high

scores over the first two rounds,my ownMrs C, not to be outdone by that Ko-rean upstart Shin, managed to see outthe whole week too! Refusing to bebeaten by theweather (despite sufferinga severe drenching on a couple of occa-sions), the Cherubic Commandant(she’s beautiful, but what she says, goes)stood her ground with nary a flinch nora whinge in the face of all that MotherNature could throw at her.No matter what the weather did,

Course Marshals, you see, were not al-lowed to ‘stand down’.To be honest, I’m not sure what the

appeal was in volunteering in the firstplace. Perhaps it’s because the last timeMrs C watched live, tournament golfwas when, being an old romantic, I tookher to watch the ’93 Ryder Cup atTheBelfry, (ah, whither Seve?) and theLadies Open at Hoylake provided, therefore, a great chance to see theworld’s best women golfers play in ourregion.Ormaybe it’s the power:holdingaloft a bat with ‘QUIET PLEASE’ and‘STANDSTILL’on it puts the bearer incontrol of possibly hundreds of would-

be transgressors and chatterers.Actually,Mrs C opted for the Army-

issue bat with ‘OI,GOBBY,SHUTIT!’on one side and ‘STAND STILL, YOUMORON!’ on the other! Combinedwith her infamous ‘kill-at-40-paces’glare, no-one dared even blink! The bat, illegibly autographed by

god-knows-who, now stands in thedownstairs loo.As you probably know, Friday’s play

was abandoned because of strongwinds,so Saturday was themake-or-break day.A bit nippy to start with, it warmed upnicely by 12 o’clock, and the coats cameoff. I stood near the 15th greenwatchingas player after player punched a seveniron into the gently undulating green. We saw a few birdies, a couple of threeputts, and some delicate bunker play. One particular ‘flight’, comprising threeEuropean golfers, played their tee shotswith varying results: one in the bunker, one just short of the green, and one 10-12 feet from the pin. After the othersholed out, the lady with the birdie puttbegan her preparation by stalking thegreen and studying the slope from thisway and that, then from front and backbefore having, finally, half a dozen prac-tice putt swings and addressing the ball. The ball dropped to polite applause andan appreciative wave from the player. There was no punching of the air nor

anywhoops of delight as she handed herputter to the caddy, I noticed the chapholding the mobile scoreboard for thisparticular trio. Their combined scorewas +40-something - one of themwas 25over and our heroine had just got it backto 17 over! No wonder tournament golftakes five hours. If I could make it happen, the next

time I take the CC to a tournament, itwill be to ‘speed golf ’ in which eachplayer, prior to play, must devour a fullEnglish breakfast and two mugs of cof-fee, nip to the pro’s shop to stock upwithchocolate, and then carry their ownbagsround - all in under four hours. We canmanage it, why can’t they?

Our Cheshire-based columnist on the good and thebad from last month’s Ricoh Women’s British Open.

Talking points with...IMPROVE YOUR BALLSTRIKING SKILLSGolfWorks teaching pro Daniel Haughian, based at the Adlington Golf Centre, inMacclesfield, with a useful drill to try out the next time you are out on the range.

TAKE a look at a really good drill I use tohelp develop better ball striking. It encourages you to get used to thefeeling of more weight on your left side atimpact instead of the right side, which isa common fault.Set up with the ball level with your leftheel and so that your head and sternumare over the ball. You can use your back

foot to help keep your balance. At thispoint your weight will favour your leftside. The idea is to hit the ball maintainingbalance and not falling backwards. I’dstart with a wedge and then progressthrough your bag. This drill is great to use at the range asit will give you a good descending blow

on the ball, which is the key to distanceand consistency.A lot of clients tend to want to help theball up with a scooping action where theirhead falls behind the ball. This leads tothinned shots and a lack of power, due tothe weight falling back away from thetarget. With this drill you cannot do thiswithout losing your balance.

FAIRYTALE DEBUT FORGRAND FINALCHAMPS

LANCASHIRE golfers Rita Towler andDot Scholes made a fairytale debut in theEngland Golf PING Fourball BetterballTournament when they became 2012champions at the Grand Final at Gains-borough.

This is the first year their club, Har-wood, has entered the tournament – andby chance, it was Dot who suggested theytake part. “I’m the competition secretaryand when I saw the flyer I told the com-mittee I thought we should enter,” shesaid.

Their journey to the title ended whenthey scored 41 points in cold and windyconditions on the challenging KarstenLakes course. They had come through aninitial entry of around 15,500 womenfrom more than 750 clubs who enteredthis year’s competition. The top 60 pairscontested the Grand Final while the next72 qualified for the previous day’s PlateFinal.

“We are stunned, shell-shocked,amazed, anything we say is an understate-ment,” said Dot, who plays off 12. Rita,an eight-handicapper, remarked: “It’s veryspecial, overwhelming.”

They won by two points from Stafford-shire pair Lisa Davies and Karen Grif-fiths, from Leek.

The new champions are regular golfingpartners and longstanding friends, with aspecial bond born out of sadness. Dotsaid: “When my husband, Charlie, diedthree years ago Rita was the best supportI could have had. Golf also helped a lot,the support I had from the club was won-derful, it’s a bit like a surrogate family.”

The runners-up, Lisa and Karen werealso taking part in their first national finaland, as well as competitive play, they enjoywhat they describe as extra-curricular

golf: girls days’ out, mixed events andbreaks.

Karen said: “We’ve never played inanything where they greet you on the firsttee and check the number of clubs in yourbag! My knees were shaking.” Lisa, who

has played for just three years, added: “It’sbeen excellent, absolutely fantastic.”

The nearest-the-pin prize was won byCatherine Devereux, of Fishwick Hall,Lancashire. Her shot finished less thantwo feet from the target. Her partner was

her daughter,Rosie, who at 14 was one ofthe youngest competitors in the field.

In addition to the prizes for the top sixpairs, all competitors received a PINGgolf bag, a pair of ECCO shoes and aPING Collection voucher.
