History Two thousand years ago, the ancestors of the Maori people, from Polynesia,arrived in New Zealand (which means "land of the Long White Cloud") in hugecanoes and initially only occupied theNorth Island. Much later, Abel Tasman

was the first European explorer to sight the islands, but who really started thecolonization was the English Captain

James Cook in 1769.

After years of war with the Maori, theBritish Crown in 1840 signed the Treaty of Waitangi, which officially makes NewZealand a British colony, confiscating their best to Maori land. Only in 1955 they can
