ling ondersoek word ná berigte in die mediadat 16 van die inwoners binne vyf maandeindié ongeregistreerde tehuis oorlede is. Sesinwoners is in een maand hier oorlede.Huis Serendipity in Seringlaan, Sonnen-

dal het nou net 25 inwoners oor.

Sondagkoerante het ’n week gelede berighoe voormalige personeel en kinders van in-woners van dié huis vir versorging beginpraat het oor die beweerde swak toestandein die huis.Die Sunday Times het berig dat Lozita

Benjamin, ’n verpleegwerker van Elsiesri-vier, aan hulle vertel het hoe personeel in-struksies van die eienaar, Sharon Roberts,gekry het om aan die inwoners kalmeerpillete gee as hulle te raserig is. Benjamin het indetail vertel hoe swakdie gehalte vandiekos

up at the Willowbridge centre on Saturdaymorning for the Cape Town run and when

the clock struck 10:00, a collective roar deafe-ned the crowdwho then filed out quite order-ly onTygerbergValley drive towards theN7.Although it was more about the ride than

the destination, the circular route took themback to theN1, DurbanRoad and theWillow-bridge centre again, where bands and braaiswere ready to cater for the leather clad parti-cipantswith something soothing for the earsand dry throats.

the number of rodents. As a result, mostlarge-scale rodent baiting occurs at thistime of year.“Cape Town is no different from other

major cities around the world, which allhave to dealwith pests, including rats, espe-cially in the context of an ever-growing pop-ulation and thewaste it generates. Rats andother pests thrive in areas where they havea steady food supply, stormwater drainagesystems, andnopredators,” said citymaycomember for health, Benedicta VanMinnen.The city’s environmental health staff, as-

sisted byworkers employed via the expand-ed public works programme, bait rodentsacross the city and set up 83 247 rodent bait-

ing stations last year.City health offers a free rodent control

service to members of marginalised com-munities, that can be accessed by contact-ing their local environmental health officeor by leaving a rodent complaint at their lo-cal municipal clinic. In other areas, baitingis done in public areas and not on individu-al premises.“Our staff members also spend a consid-

erable amount of time going door-to-door toeducate residents about effective wastemanagement and how to rodent-proof theirhomes. Rats will congregate in areas thatare conducive to their survival, so it’s es-sential to keep areas clean through theproper disposal ofwaste and tackling illegaldumping,” said van Minnen.Van Minnen said the environmental

health staff identify potential infestationhot spots, such as CBDs, public transportinterchanges and beachfront promenades.They conduct weekly visits to informal set-tlements to determine the status of solidwaste removal, sanitation and rodent activ-ity, and to block bait perimeter sewerdrains bordering informal settlements.“We have a strategy, but we need the sup-

port of communities for it to be effective.This includes keeping their areas clean, butalso reporting concerns around service de-livery. cation of youth and offering Ufagad as a po-sitive alternative to gangsterism.The group plans a march in Langa on 5

November and requests community fo-rums and organisations join forces.“While we can, we need to take back our

communities,” he said.The Ufagad executive consists of an elec-

ted guardian council, a national governingbody, national directorates and a nationalsecurity council with a number of generals– “representing all the organisationswhichform part of the front,” Ebrahim said.

Robbie Wessels, Corlea Botha, Zanne Sta-pelberg, Jannie Moolman en Cobus Sny-man. Dit sal Corlea en Robbie se eerstekeer wees by Klassieke Kersfees en die ge-hoor sal ondermeerkanuitsiennaRobbiese “Pinocchio se Dam” en Corlea se “Son-vanger”. Zanne en Jannie, ou bekendes byKlassieke Kersfees, gaan saam van diemooiste klassieke liedere vertolk, inslui-tend “Vivo per Lei”. Cobus, wat verledejaar die gehoor gaande gehad het met syrasperstem, sal onder meer ’n Pavarotti-nommer saam met Jannie sing en saammet Zanne die liedjie “White Christmas”.Die gehoor sal die geleentheid kry om

saam te sing met liedjies soos “Joy to theWorld”, “Stille Nag”, “Hark the HeraldAngels” en “Away in a Manger”.Die kunstenaars word die aand begelei

deur ’n 29-stuk-simfonie-orkes. ’n Massa-koor van die Frank Pietersen-musieksen-trum sal ook optree. Dié konsert, wat ge-borg word deur die Tygervallei-sentrum,is verlede jaar deur meer as 3 000 mensebygewoon en dit beloof om vanjaar ookvolgepak tewees.Komdusvroeg, bring fa-milie en vriende saam en kom geniet ’nwonderlike aand op die Paarlberg onderdie sterre. Jannie Moolman is ’n wandelende ensi-klopedie as dit kom by dinge wat homna aan die hart lê. Soos sy moedertaal,

geskiedenis, digters – van hier en van ver,lewend en dood – en skrywers. Skrywerswat gedigte met behulp van musiek inge-kleurhet ennuwe lewe insoms vergete gedigte ge-blaas het.Dis ook die titel van sy

nuwe produksie, Digtersen Skrywers, wat weer inJanuarie by Die Boer op-gevoer word.Dat Jannie passievol is

oor dié nuwe projek, isverseker. In een asemnoem hy die name van ’nhele rits digters en kom-poniste en eindig danmet’n aanhaling van HenryPurcell, ’n Britse kompo-niswat in die 17de eeu ge-leef het: “Soos digkuns die harmonie vanwoorde is, so is musiek dié van note. Mu-siek en digkuns is susterskunste wat hand-aan-hand wandel. Apart kan hulle bloei,maar saam is hulle soos die karaktereien-skappe van humor en skoonheid in een.”Hoewel meeste mense bekend is met die

name van komponiste soos Schubert enSchumann, is dit minder bekend dat hulwerke van digters soos Heine, Von Goetheen Seidel getoonset het, sê Jannie.“Wat my fassineer is dat komponiste en

liedjieskrywers oor dekades aanklank ge-vind het by een gedig,” vertel Jannie. Hy ge-bruik Boerneef as ’n voorbeeld wie se Afri-kaanse gedig soos “Voshaarnooi” getoonsetis en later een van die gewildste Afrikaanse

liedjies geword het. Jo Niemand het Toonvan den Heever se “In die Hoëveld” sy eiegemaak. “Ekwou eendag by Jak de Priesterweet wat hom so inspireer om gedigte tetoonset. Hy het dit so mooi beskryf en gesê‘dit voel of Antjie Krog woorde uit sy mondgesteel het, of sy net voor hom gelewe het’,”vertel Jannie.

Hy praat met bewonde-ring van die FAK-sang-bundel wat in 1937 vir dieeerste keer verskyn het.Getoonsette werke van

digters soos Leipoldt,Langenhoven, Visser enKeet kom in dié bundelvoor wat, volgens die in-leiding, ten doel gehadhet “omdie gevoel van sa-mehorigheid onder Afri-kaners te versterk; juisdaarom is sowat 275 vandie liedjies vir saamsingbereken.”Behalwe vir Digters en

Skrywers, kan aanhangers Jannie ooksteeds sien optree as tenoor. After listening to the budgetspeech, which stated we will bepaying more taxes, I askedmyself, why aren’t theseforeign shop owners payingtaxes?

When you go into theirshops, you don’t receive tillslips from 99% of them.

At the 1% of the shopswhere you get till slips, itdoesn’t state the shop’s nameor the tax payment.

How many of these shops arelegal? Has it ever been investi-gated?

I believe that there arebillions of Rands in taxeswhich go unpaid and couldhelp our economy.

It is inequality.There are thousands of

foreign-owned shops across thecountry. It seems that theConsumer Protection Act,especially the right to returngoods, does not apply to them.

Consumers have the right toreturn unsafe or defectivegoods, and request a fullrefund for such goods –provided this is done within areasonable period.

Consumers have the right toreturn goods which were notpre-examined prior to delivery.

When you take goods back tothese shops, they refuse torefund you.

When we threaten them withthe police, they laugh at usand throw us out of their shop.

It seems as though the policeand VRCID are more con-cerned about the homelesspeople sleeping in VoortrekkerRoad than they are with thosesleeping in the back streetsand trespassing on privateproperty.

What about the large group ofpeople who have been sleepingon Occuvision’s stoep for quitesome time? What about thosesleeping at the property on thecorner of Norden and KingEdward roads?

Although one can clearly seethese people are trespassing, thepolice choose to look the otherway. On Tuesday 28 October,they referred me to the MetroPolice as they “don’t evictillegal trespassers”. On theother hand, for the last 10 yearswe never had that problemwhen a police officer lived inNorden Road because hercolleagues from Parow policeassisted her in keeping vagramtelements away.

I’m sure there’s many moresquatter incidents like these.The authorities should realisethat what is happening inVoortrekker Road is merely amanifestation of what’s brewingin the back streets.

It appears northern suburbsmotorists are hellbent onwriting each other off, drivingin their private cocoons totallyoblivious to other road usersand road rules.

Consider the traffic circle atthe Old Oak entrance toTygervalley Shopping Centre:there are three lanes from thecircle to Old Oak Avenue.

The left lane is dedicated totraffic from the north side ofthe parking, the middle lane isfor traffic exiting the circle’souter lane towards Old OakAvenue, and the right lane isfor traffic exiting the circle’sinner lane towards Old OakAvenue. Traffic on the innerlane may also proceed furtheraround the circle if required.

It is idiotically dangerous tocut from the inner lane circleto the other two. Despite this,just about every time I drivethere is some idiot who tries toshove me across this barrier

line.Consider any of the roads

which intersect with DurbanRoad. These roads have onelane in each direction. DurbanRoad has two lanes in eachdirection.

If you wish to turn left ontoDurban Road, you are requiredto turn into the left lane; thesame for the right lane

There are solid barrier linesbetween the two lanes and it isillegal to enter the right lanefrom the left – and vice-versa –as it would entail crossing thesolid barrier line.

It is dangerous to cut into theright lane from the left side.Despite this, just about everytime I drive there some left-turning idiot tries to shove meinto the centre island when Iturn right onto Durban Road.

Please wake up. Be aware ofthe road environment in whichyou drive.

Switzerlandand Israel, with the mostheavily, legally armed citizens,have the lowest armed crimerates in the world.

The guitarist behind Afrikaans rockband, Zinkplaat, has been quietlyworking on a side project that’s been

picking up steam.Basson Laubscher started Basson Laub-

scher & The Violent Free Peace in about2004, while still playing with Zinkplaat, asa way for him to play some of the music heloved outside of the band.“This project started very organically,”

he says. Being a fan of blues himself, TheViolent Free Peace started out as a coverband and a way to have fun.“It kind of grew into something else.”Today theband,madeupofBassonongui-

tar and vocals, Beitel Van Der Merwe onbass and Jan Fyfer on drums, plays whatBasson describes as a good mix betweenblues, rock, folk and country.

Raw and loudAlthough the band released their debut-

EP, Shakedown, earlier this year, Bassonsays their sound is rawer and a lot louderthan what you’ll hear on the album.When they band first started, the line up

was constantly changing. Die Heuwels Fan-tasties’ Fred den Hartog even did a stintwith The Violent Free Peace and it was hewho came up with the band’s name.The band was enjoying a “beer drinking/

rehearsal session”whenFred suggested thename “DieWredeVrede”, but being anEng-lish band, they decided to gowith a translat-ed version.“It worked out well because it’s an abso-

lute pun and it works in the context of theband,” Basson says of his three-piece. “Plusyour name gets used big on posters becausethey have to write it all out”.Basson will make his second turn on the

Table Mountain Blues Summit stage whenhe performs with The Violent Free Peace inDecember.“It’s an amazing event and there should

be a lot more every year.” But Basson saysit’s interesting that he’s on the line up ashe sometimes tries to steer clear of the“blues” label.He says blues, especially in South Africa,

has a bit of a cliched stigma attached to it.“People usually think of old grey guys sit-

ting in a corner playing the same12bar stuffover and over.”

His music is definitely influenced byblues though. As a child, Basson listened topunk and metal, preferring not to listen towhat his dad was listening to, until he dis-covered his father’s vinyl collection at theage of 14.“He had this vinyl of this crazy dude with

this big hat and pink cowboy boots and areally beaten up guitar. I remember I put iton and from the first track, the virus set in.”The crazy dude was Stevie Ray Vaughn

and Basson was hooked on the raw honestyof the blues.

Undeniable“It’s undeniable, if it’s in you, it’s in you.”Basson says his songs are like his chil-

dren, and he’s not ready to choose the oneshe’ll take on stage for the summit, but hemight just throw in a Led Zeppelin numberduring his set.The Table Mountain Blues Summit runs

Gideon Drotschie is itching to getback in the hexagon after a year’slay-off with a back injury, and

looks forward to defending his heavy-weight title against Norman Wessels onThursday night.

Drotschie, known as the “Jugger-naut”, last fought at EFC 25 in Novem-ber last year when he successfully de-fended his title against Fraser Opie.

According to head coach Rico Hat-tingh of REPS Fitness in Bellville, Nor-man “Chef” Wessels will be the toughestopponent in Drotschie’s short but everso successful professional career thusfar. “This will be our toughest fight yet,no doubt. But having said that, we arevery confident that Gideon will retainhis title. We thoroughly did our homework and we are prepared.

Raring to go“We know Norman’s strong points

and we know where to attack. The im-portant thing for us is to focus on ourown game. Training has been excep-tionally good and Gideon recoverednicely from a niggling back injury. Heis fit and raring to go,” said Hattingh.

The Table View Football Club women’steams had a splendid year, receivingthree top awards at the recent Tygerbergsenior league awards dinner.

Table View was the 2014 league winner,and won the Team of the Year trophy.

Ashley Kondowe was also announcedas the Player of the Year.

Table View held their own awards din-ner two weeks ago and Kondowe was thestar of the evening. She was awarded thePlayer of the Year in the Women’s TeamAward and the Club Senior Awards cate-

Golden Boot award for her 18 goals du-ring the season.

Robyn Windsor was the Players’ Playerof the Year, and Estelle Martin was crow-ned the Most Improved Player of the Ye-ar. Gary Heyburgh, who did a phenome-nal job as coach of the women’s first team,was awarded Coach of the Year.

Shenneca Cassidy, who captained thewomen’s side to victory, received theSports Woman of the Year award.

Following an exciting 2014 season, fiercecompetition marked the national finals ofthe Spur High School Mountain Bike Leaguethat was hosted at Bekker School in Maga-liesburg.

A record number of 355 riders represen-ting the cream of high school mountain bikeriders from more than 69 schools acrossSouth Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe whocompeted in the two-day event.

DF Malan, who formed part of the WesternCape team, came third in the interprovincialtournament. The 4.5km track at BekkerSchool proved more challenging than previ-ous seasons, boasting a lot of single trackstretches as well as tricky falls and climbsthat required both stamina and technicalskills from the riders. The lap-race formatof the event saw the various age categoriescomplete a specific number of laps ranging

from two laps for the sub-junior girls to a tes-ting five laps for the junior men.

The team from Menlopark High Schoolwas on top form and secured four podium po-sitions as well as logging a number of top tenpositions to secure both the girls and mixedteam national championship trophies, whileGrey College in Bloemfontein won the boysteam category.

The league was launched in 2009 as a jointinitiative between Spur and Amarider tocreate a fun racing environment for child-ren, and has also facilitated the building ofmountain bike tracks on school propertyand community grounds.

Earlier this year the league cemented itsposition as one of the leading sport develop-ment programmes in the country when itwas shortlisted as a finalist for the 2014 Dis-covery Sport Industry Awards.
