Do you recall the 1985 sci-fi classic entitled Back To The Future, starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd? The storyline was about a small-town California teen who was thrown back into the 1950’s when an experiment by his eccentric scientist friend went wrong. He was transported through time in a DeLorean Motor Company vehicle and meets young versions of his parents, and must make sure that they fall in love or he will cease to exist. If that wasn’t enough, he must then return to his own time period to save the life of his scientist friend. In many ways I can truly relate to Marty McFly and his mission, as I’m transported in my mind (that’s the DeLorean), to a time growing up in what I considered a fairly large congregation in the metropolitan Detroit area (Gateway). One of my vivid memories is of a strong emphasis on and committed financial support to, mission efforts beyond the walls of the local church footprint. These efforts were being carried out by faithful Christian men and women in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the Philippine Islands, and you guessed it, right here at Shults-Lewis in Valparaiso, Indiana! I sat through numerous presentations as a child and a teenager, listening to those involved in the various ministries, because the elders believed it would benefit the mission effort, as well as the local church, by helping the membership look beyond its own needs and wants. Those faithful leaders were helping all of us “fall in love” with the various missions so that they would NOT cease to exist. Now, back to the future! My prayer and desire is that those of you who are older and more familiar with Shults-Lewis, will help the younger generations “fall in love” with this ministry, just as you and I did. Our future is bright! We have been working to identify and streamline our strategies and goals for the future, as we fulfill our mission statement of “responding with God’s love to serve and strengthen children and families”. We have set the future date of Sunday, May 31, 2015, as an opportunity for you and others to commit to our future existence by participating in our Day of Prayer and Giving. Please pray that God would reveal the blessings He is already preparing for this ministry on that day. Ask that He would open your heart to the call of the children and families who need our help, prompting you to respond generously to our financial solicitations. Most importantly, take time to thank Him for the bountiful blessings he has bestowed on this agency over the past year. What an awesome God we serve!
For Christ and the kids,
Back to the FUTURE

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
Growing up, my parents encouraged my brother and me to use the phrase “get to” rather than “have to”. It’s a simple word change, but it changes the perspective on any given task. I “get to” clean my room. I “get to” help the family by doing dishes. But the biggest one was that we “get to” go to worship together as family. We “get to” study God’s word. We “get to “ give to help others. It’s not a command, it’s a pleasure. It is an awesome opportunity, not a dreaded task.
In March, over 80 volunteers took advantage of an awesome opportunity to be a part of our Annual Phone for Children Campaign by getting to make phone calls and over 2,000 of you “answered the call” by pledging a total of $144, 019.12! Thank you to everyone who made this event a successful one. What an incredible month!!
Another opportunity to “get to” help Shults-Lewis is coming this month. On May 31st, we are having our first Day of Prayer and Giving for Shults-Lewis. It is my prayer that this event gathers congregations together to pray for our kids, their families, our staff, and our future.
We have a HUGE goal set for this Day of Prayer and Giving. Back in 1991, we dedicated the Youth Development Center which houses our school and counseling staff. Many of you gave to make that dream a reality and we are so thankful for it. I also know that the plans didn’t stop with getting the building erected. There’s more work to be done.
As we plan for the future of Shults-Lewis, we have begun breaking down different areas of improvements that need to be done. The 2015 Day of Prayer and Giving is your “get to”. You get to help us continue a work that started many years ago. The first thing on our “to do” list is updating the gymnasium for the kids. It is our goal to raise $50,000 to paint and pad the walls, to put new flooring down, to install better, and more efficient lighting, and to put in new basketball goals.
Information packets will be sent to congregations which will include prayer requests from our kids and staff. It will also include more information regarding the updates we hope to complete.
As individuals and congregations, please use May 31st to say a special prayer for Shults-Lewis and provide an extra gift for updating the gymnasium for our kids.
Pray Big! We already have a congregation of less than 50 members who is aiming to give a gift of over $10,000. Anne Frank wrote, “No one has ever become poor by giving”. Paul encouraged us in 2nd Corinthians 8 to excel in everything, including our giving.
We “get to” give. Awesome!

Spring has finally arrived and with it the anticipation of some very special events including our annual
Spelling Bee, our spring field trip, our banquet honoring the strengths of our students, field day and graduation
for our two seniors, Pandora and Banita! The girls have been planning their special day and have created their own invitations and programs in
Computer class. We are so excited for them!
We weathered the long winter by planning some special activities for everyone to enjoy! In January we decorated the gym for a Beach
Party. Our lunch consisted of grilled hot dogs with all of the trimmings followed by beach ball volleyball, and then an appearance by our newest
attraction – the “Beach Bums.” The boys in Home 7 have formed a band with guitars and singers and their entertainment has become a real
hit!! They also performed at our winter carnival in February and I’m encouraging them to keep practicing for future events. We honored our
houseparents with a Progressive dinner in February and they were given gifts created by the students. At the end of third quarter two students
made the Distinguished High Honor Roll, three students made the High
Honor Roll and five students made the regular Honor Roll. We are
super proud of the academic successes that many of our students are
achieving.
Please continue to send us your Box Tops for Education and
Labels for Education – we will be using these funds for a very special
field trip this spring -- I can’t tell you about it now but will tell
you about it in the next Telegram! We think the students are really
going to enjoy this activity! Enjoy your summer!

Can you spell
Champion?Hannah won our Annual Spelling Bee and Pandora
took 2nd Place. Congratulations, ladies!
As parents we often give our children gifts, some are tangible and others are not. We try very hard to prepare them for the “real world” and to equip them with all the tools they will need to navigate through this life successfully. We try to use every moment, and turn it into something that teaches life lessons, turning failures into future successes and every success into a stepping stone or a building block of something bigger or greater yet to come. What amazes me is that even now as my children have grown into beautiful young women with families of their
own, some grandchildren in college, others in junior high or elementary school, I once again find myself learning more than I am teaching. I am learning lessons of how incredible our young people are.
Last month I had the opportunity and pleasure of taking some of our girls out for the evening to celebrate their success of achieving a specific level. After dinner, but before the movie, we were able to get in a little fun shopping at a local large chain craft store. I had asked the girls to pick out something with a quote or saying on it that they felt represented them or applied specifically to them. After a little fun and goofing around, Pandora picked up a wooden wall hanging with the words SO LOVED on it. I took her picture holding it and really didn’t think too much about it until later that evening as I was looking through all of the pictures we had taken. I realized then that she really “gets it”. A sense of confidence at such a tender age. She really is so loved, we are all so loved. We are loved so much, not just by each other, or by our friends and family, by our congregations or even by our wonderfully generous donors who enrich our lives with their donations (some of which specifically made our evening out possible). We are loved so much by a God who never fails us, forsakes us or leaves us. What blessings God has showered on His children. I appreciate so much the lessons I am able to learn from such insightful young people. We are all so blessed to have these individuals in our homes.
I am always grateful to each and every one of you who have taken us into your hearts and given so much of your time, energy, talents, gifts, donations, cards and prayers. Thank you for blessing our lives, and as the summer approaches we look forward to seeing many of you on our campus as you visit and work with us.
Therefore be followers of God, as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us, and has given Himself for us as an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savor.
