LSU AgCenter economist Michael Deliberto said commodities are looking better this week, and the stock market has improved. But uncertainty from the pandemic is a dom- inant factor in the economy. “This uncertainty has translated into down- ward pressure on commodity prices. As un- certainty begins to resolve in the coming weeks and months, the outlook on usage and demand will have more clarity,” he said. Markets will begin to focus on production and growing season issues as well as on how demand might evolve. “The markets have improved a little from last week,” Deliberto said. “Corn and soy- bean futures have started the week up while cotton started the week down. U.S. stock in- dices also are higher from last week.” “As uncertainty begins to re- solve in the coming weeks and months, the outlook on usage and demand will have more clar- ity,” he added. “As such, markets will begin to focus on produc- tion and growing season issues as well as how demand might evolve.” Grain markets are moving higher, building on last week’s recoveries in soybeans and wheat, with speculation that global buyers will boost pur- chases to increase food security reserves. Rice has made a big jump in price, with May contracts on March 23 for $13.35 per hundredweight, or $21.63 a barrel, or about $6 a bushel. Not much rice may be left on-farm for old crop prices to continue to increase. “This is a function of lower supply really driving the price up,” Deliberto said. Increased rice exports have boosted prices, and demand is good for rough and milled rice. Milling continues to satisfy commit- ments to Latin America and Mexico buyers. “Another factor for the jump may be that outside funds are looking into the commodi- ties such as rice,” he said. Cotton has not fared well in the past few days, with prices falling to the lowest levels since 2009. (03/23/20) BATON ROUGE, La. — Plant-ing is underway or about to start for most crops, and farmers are watching the markets closely as the world economy reels from the fallout created by the novel coronavirus.

LSU AgCenter economist Michael Deliberto said commodities are looking better this week, and the stock market has improved. But uncertainty from the pandemic is a dom-inant factor in the economy.

“This uncertainty has translated into down-ward pressure on commodity prices. As un-certainty begins to resolve in the coming weeks and months, the outlook on usage and demand will have more clarity,” he said.

Markets will begin to focus on production and growing season issues as well as on how demand might evolve.

“The markets have improved a little from last week,” Deliberto said. “Corn and soy-

bean futures have started the week up while cotton started the week down. U.S. stock in-dices also are higher from last week.”

“As uncertainty begins to re-solve in the coming weeks and months, the outlook on usage and demand will have more clar-ity,” he added. “As such, markets will begin to focus on produc-tion and growing season issues as well as how demand might evolve.”

Grain markets are moving higher, building on last week’s recoveries in soybeans and wheat, with speculation that global buyers will boost pur-chases to increase food security reserves.

Rice has made a big jump in

price, with May contracts on March 23 for $13.35 per hundredweight, or $21.63 a barrel, or about $6 a bushel. Not much rice may be left on-farm for old crop prices to continue to increase.

“This is a function of lower supply really driving the price up,” Deliberto said.

Increased rice exports have boosted prices, and demand is good for rough and milled rice. Milling continues to satisfy commit-ments to Latin America and Mexico buyers.

“Another factor for the jump may be that outside funds are looking into the commodi-ties such as rice,” he said.

Cotton has not fared well in the past few days, with prices falling to the lowest levels since 2009. May cotton was staying above 50 cents a pound on March 23.

“There are also concerns the plunge to an 18-year low in crude oil futures will push more textile production to synthetic fibers when global textile plants resume normal operations,” Deliberto said.

Soybean prices remain low, below $9 a bushel, a price that makes the commodity attractive to buyers.

“U.S. soybeans are competitively priced, and traders are on alert for any signs of Chi-nese demand for U.S. supplies. Slowing U.S. exports are hurting prices among other fac-tors,” he said.

Baton Rouge, La. – March 24 is National Ag Day. Although the usual Ag Day celebrations were canceled as we work to get a handle on the COVID-19 crisis, health safety and food security of the nation’s food supply are at the forefront.

“More than ever, we must recognize the importance of our farmers, ranchers, foresters and producers. They are still working to keep the food supply chain plentiful, safe and healthy,” Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry Mike Strain, D.V.M., said.

“I have gotten many questions

concerning food safety during this uncertain time,” Strain said. “Currently, there is no evidence that food or foodborne exposure to this virus is connected with the transmission of this respiratory illness.”

Strain urges everyone to continue to follow CDC guidelines for health, hygiene, cleaning and disinfection.

Corn prices in the mid-$3-per-bushel range have benefitted recently from in-creased export demand, but it’s not known if that is a trend. Also unknown is the effect of the sharp drop in crude oil prices on the ethanol industry outlook, he said.

There is some expectation that the Chi-nese will be buying more commodities.

“That adds to the positive tone today, with stock index futures erasing steep overnight losses this morning ahead of the opening on Wall Street after the Federal Reserve moved to inject a large, unprecedented expansion in programs to provide more liquidity to the

markets,” Deliberto said on March 23.There is talk that the economic stimulus

bill in the Senate may include funds for another round of Market Facilitation Pay-ments.

Last week’s trading was based more on fear than reason, Deliberto said.

“It’s often said markets need a calming influence before some semblance of nor-malcy can return,” he said.

Investors are turning to the U.S. dollar, he added.

“It quickly displaced gold, which has lost nearly 15% in the past two weeks,” he said.

Central America Outbound Trade Mission Guatemala & El Salvador July 27 – July 31, 2020

Guatemala has the largest economy and the largest population at around 17 million people in Central America. The U.S. is Guatemala’s largest trading partner, additionally U.S. products have no import tariffs, and all remaining tariffs will be removed within the next few years. Around 31% of consumer-oriented products imported into the country come from the U.S. Guatemalans have adopted much of the U.S. culture, and local food tastes are changing, and more high-value foods are preferred. Most Guatemalans are familiar with and prefer U.S. products to other imported or domestic products, as they are perceived as safer and of higher quality. With the preference for U.S. products and Guatemala’s geographic location providing for lower cost exporting, Southern U.S. exporters have an advantage in this market.

El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America, but has the fourth largest economy. It is a densely populated country with a population that has had great exposure to U.S. culture and influence. With a push from the middle- and upper- income consumers, demands for innovated products, specifically with new flavors and health benefits are in demand. U.S. foods are also well received as being both safe and high quality. Importers in the country are frequently searing for new-to-market products to remain competitive in the retail landscape. As with Guatemala, the U.S. has lower import duties and compared to competitors, and with the country’s close proximity to the Southern U.S., Southern exporters have an advantage in this market as well.

(03/20/20) BATON ROUGE, La. — Looking for some excitement during this time at home? Discovering what’s around us is a good way to spend some free time while getting out of the house.

Nathan Lord, LSU AgCenter entomologist and director of the Louisiana State Arthropod Museum, said now is a good time to get homebound students in the yard to explore the various insects native to Louisiana.

“This break from school provides a great opportunity for children to learn about the different insects here in Louisiana,” Lord said.

The Feliciana Wildlife Expo that was scheduled at the AgCenter Bob R. Jones-Idlewild Research Station before the coronavirus crisis would have given children a chance to

observe the museum’s collection of insects, Lord said.

“I have travelled to every continent except Antarctica and have collected a number of different insect species that I had planned to display at the wildlife expo,” he said.

His collection consists of local insects as well as those from other areas of the world that would be interesting to see.

Lord said the experiences he has had during his travels have allowed him to collect some unique specimens.

“When I was in Madagascar, I saw many different species that are found in no other area of the world,” he said.

The same situation exists here. Surprisingly, you may have insects in your own backyard that have never been documented.

Lord said Madagascar was one of the places that felt the most alien to him. He experienced a similar feeling in Australia.

“When you’re there, other than driving on the wrong side, the scenery in some areas looks similar to places you’ve been in Louisiana,” he said. “But then as you’re just riding along, a group of kangaroos bounce across the road, or a giant flying fox overshadows your vehicle.”

Lord said parents can visit websites to help their children learn about possible science experiments right outside their door.

Three of those sites are iNaturalist, BugGuide and the wildlife identification app Seek.

“Some of these websites allow you to use your cellphone to identify plants, animals and insects,” Lord

said. “There’s nothing wrong with going into your own backyard to do a little investigating.”

Louisiana still has species

to be discovered. And you don’t have to go to a park or other populated areas to learn and have some fun in the process.

Baton rouge, La.  (march 23, 2020) – Despite the ongoing worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) is now accepting applications for the 2020 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (SCBGP), Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., announced today.

“We are all adjusting to this new normal of social distancing due to the worldwide pandemic caused by the Coronavirus,” Strain said “Although all LDAF buildings are closed to the public at this time, the LDAF continues to provide services through telecommuting wherever possible.”

The LDAF will administer the grant program funded through the United States Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Marketing Service (USDA-AMS). The LDAF anticipates at least

$413,000.00 to be allocated to fund Louisiana projects.

Applications must be received no later than close of business (4:30 p.m.) April 23, 2020.

The grants are to be used for projects that solely enhance the competitiveness of Louisiana-grown specialty crops like fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits and nursery crops including floriculture and horticulture in either domestic or foreign markets.

Applicants must reside in or their organization or educational affiliation must be in Louisiana. All applicants are required to obtain a Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number and include that number on their application.

Grant funds will not be awarded for projects that directly benefit a particular commercial product or provide a profit to a single

organization, institution or individual. Projects should focus on issues to help improve specialty crop industries as a whole such as: distribution, production, research, market development, food safety, promotion and education. Individual farms are not eligible to apply; however,  producer associations, state and/or local organization, state or local governments, qualified educational institutions, non-profits and other specialty crop stakeholders are eligible recipients.

Once the deadline has passed, all applications submitted to the LDAF will be carefully evaluated to determine if the projects are qualified based on the criteria listed in the guidelines. All submitted project applications deemed qualified will be reviewed and scored by a panel consisting

of industry stakeholders, and the panel will make funding recommendations to LDAF. All LDAF approved projects will be incorporated into one state grant request, which will be submitted to the USDA.

LDAF has prepared a Request for Applications (RFA) document detailing application instructions, scoring criteria, federal forms, project format examples and other helpful information from the USDA. The document may be found at www.LDAF.la.gov. Click on the  2020 Specialty Crop alert.

A complete list of eligible specialty crops may be found at  http://www.ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/scbgpdefinitions.
