Kenyatta varsity hails existing MoU with Unilorin

outside the University.Prof. Ambali disclosed that

Kenyatta University is one of the Universities in Africa with very a c t i v e M e m o r a n d u m o f Understanding (MoU) with the University of Ilorin.

Earlier in his remarks, the Director of Students Affairs at the Kenyatta University, Dr. Edwin A. Gimode, who led the students on the visit, thanked the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, who, he said, did not hesitate to approve their visit to the campus.

Dr. Gimode, who brought greetings from the Kenyatta University's Vice-Chancellor, expressed his delight to be visiting Nigeria and Ilorin specifically for the first time. He thanked the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin for his commitment to making the existing MoU between the two institutions work.

He later presented souvenirs of the Kenyatta University to the Vice-Chancellor.

The vis i t ing Kenyatta University Students were the President of KUSA, Werewere Sam; the Secretary General, Ken Mutua; the Deputy President, Kevin Mugambi; the Gender and Social Welfare Secretary, Doreen Mwenda; and the Academic Secretary, Waithaka Nick Humphrey.

They were joined on the visit

to the Vice-Chancellor's Office by some members of the Unilorin Students' Union Executive Council including the President, Mr. Idris Alao; the Vice-President, Afuye O. Olusola; the General Secretary, Akano Ifeoluwapo; the Chief Justice, Yusuf T. Biliqis; and the Senate President, Mashood A. Orire.

The Dean of Student Affairs, University of Ilorin, Prof. A. E. Talabi, who introduced the Kenyatta University team, also had in his company, the Sub-Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. A. Yusuf; the Deputy Registrar, Student Affairs, Mrs. K. W. Sallee; the Director, Centre for International Education, Prof. M. O. Ibrahim; the Assistant Directors, Centre for International Education, Dr. A. A. Abiodun; and Dr. N. T. Surajudeen-Bakinde; as well as the Student Affairs Officer, Mr. A. D. Hussain.

The Vice-Chancellor was joined at the courtesy visit by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. N. Y. S. Ijaiya; the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Dada Obafemi; the University Librarian, Dr. Joseph Omoniyi; the Deputy Bursar, Mr. O. Dere; the Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun; the Principal Assistant Registrars in the Vice-Chancellor's Office; Mr. A. Sayuti and Mr. K. K. Babamale, as well as the Protocol Officer, Mr. S. O. Agboola.

The student leaders from Nairobi, Kenya, who were led to the Vice-Chancellor's Office by the Director of Student Affairs of Kenyatta University, Dr. Edwin A. Gimode, were in the University of Ilorin on a four-day visit to u n d e r s t u d y t h e i r U n i l o r i n counterparts.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, “Africans are known to be one another's brother's keeper. Taking care of one another is a heritage we have that is being envied and should not be lost”.

Prof. Ambali told the Kenyan visitors that the University of Ilorin has a robust Students' Union, noting that the student body is given a free hand to determine what they want with little supervision.

The Vice-Chancellor added that the University management supports the Students' Union's ideas and gives them freedom to actualise the ideas as part of the plan to make them good leaders of tomorrow. He pointed out that successive Students' Union leaderships have always adhered to their agenda.

“The University of Ilorin”, according to Prof. Ambali, “has consistent academic calendar devoid of students' unrest because we dialogue with them”. He said that the continuous dialogue with the students is responsible for the University's smooth academic calendar.

He stressed that the Students' Union election is transparent and conducted electronically as the students follow the spirit of collective responsibility.

Pointing out that the Students' Union is a very crucial segment of the University community, Prof. Ambali explained that the University shields the Union from external influence that could make them derail from their primary objective. He said, “They need to be guided because we have all been students at some point

and we know how we think. We want them to learn from our mistakes”.

The Vice -Chancellor used the occasion to send his greetings to the Vice-C h a n c e l l o r o f Kenyatta University, Nairobi , Kenya, P r o f . O l i v e Mugenda, who he s a i d i s w e l l -respected within and

The President of the Kenyatta University Students' Uassociation, Mr. Werewere, making his remarks at the

luncheon

Mr. Werewere, who also l a u d e d t h e i n f r a s t r u c t u r a l deve lopment and the sound transformational leadership of the University of Ilorin, said: “I am so happy to be here today to express our sincere gratitude for your hospitality and gracious welcome you gave us throughout this time that we have been here in Nigeria. It has been a very memorable time that we have in Nigeria to have cultural exchange, to learn from you what is being done in the University of Ilorin and to share with you and I believe in one way or the other, you have also learnt much from us from Kenyatta University.”

According to him, as future leaders in Africa, there was a critical need for close contact and interaction between students across the continent in order to address the collective challenges confronting African countries.

Mr. Werewere said, “If we have very close contacts and interactions at this level, then I believe even in the future, Kenya will be partnering Nigeria at greater levels because I believe whatever the mind can conceive, it can achieve. So, this is just the beginning of our long leadership and it does not end in the University. The reason why we are here is to develop our capacity for the future.”

The Kenyan Students' leader said further, “We have learnt a lot; the Unilorin Students' Union is structured in a way that it is very comprehensive, very inspiring. We have learnt a lot and we are going to borrow some key things and most impressive among them, is the e-voting. We felt it is very important and it is an achievement because it is very hard to find universities that practice that. Although I learnt there were challenges, I have also learnt that you have been able to overcome the challenges.

Similarly in his remarks, the Dean of Student Affairs, Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Dr. Edwine

Gimode, also acknowledged the warm reception accorded them by the University of Ilorin.

Assuring that the hospitality was not taken for granted, Dr. Gimode said, “We are very thankful; I believe this visit will go a long way in making the MoU we have with the University of Ilorin stronger and more dynamic”.

He expressed the hope that “before the end of this calendar year, we will receive a delegation from Ilorin in Nairobi; when that happens, we will be waiting for you. When you feel you will be able to come, let us just know and the rest will be on us.”

Speaking earlier, the Dean of Student Affairs, University of Ilorin, Prof. A. E. Talabi, represented by the Sub-Dean, Dr. A. Yusuf, commended the role played by the former and present Directors of the Centre for International Education (CIE), Prof. Olugbenga Mokuolu and Prof. M. O. Ibrahim, respectively, in the logistics support and for making the visit a success.

He told the guests: “Whatever you have enjoyed here, it is nothing that is new but part of our own tradition. We have not done anything special for you but, indirectly, we are

telling other universities to continue to visit us and they will enjoy the same thing.”

D r. Yu s u f , w h o a l s o commended the conduct of the students of both universities, espoused the values of cultural diplomacy, saying, “We must understand ourselves; it is only when we understand ourselves that we live in harmony.”

Also in his remarks, the Director of CIE, Prof. Ibrahim, said that the Kenyatta University delegation was always welcomed to Unilorin. He called for the strengthening of the relationships between the two universities through academic col laborat ion and linkages.

The Pres iden t o f the University of Ilorin Students' Union, Mr. Idris Alao, said that the visit of the Kenyan students offers an avenue for African students to interact. He expressed appreciation to the University authority for providing the platform to host the visiting Kenyatta University students.

While praying for their safe return back to Kenya, Mr. Alao said, “We have been doing things almost in common as though they are part of the University of Ilorin; we also hope that very soon we will have the opportunity to return the visit.”

Highlights of the luncheon, which climaxed the four-day visit, were the presentation of souvenirs by the Kenyatta Universi ty delegation to their hosts.

Also present at the occasion were the Director, Unilorin Consultancy Services, Prof. Olugbenga Mokuolu; the Deputy Registrar, Student Affairs, Mrs. K. W. Sallee; the Assistant Directors, Centre for International Education, Dr. A. Abiodun and Dr. (Mrs.) Bakinde; staff members of the University of Ilorin; Executive Council members of the Kenyatta University Students' Association as well as Executive Council members of the Unilorin Students’ Union.

Alumni body committed to varsity’s development - Oduwaiye By Mustafa Abubakar

The National President of the University of Ilorin Alumni Association, Dr. (Mrs.)

Rhoda Oduwaiye, has restated the commitment of the alumni body to the development of the University.

Dr. Oduwaiye made this submission in her address during the commissioning of the renovated secretariat offices of the National Secretariat of the association penultimate Saturday (March 12, 2016) at the University of Ilorin.

According to the President, the plan of the alumni body under her leadership included the construction of an Alumni Centre that would provide essential s e rv ices to the Unive r s i ty Community and add more beauty to the aesthetics of the University campus. She recalled that last year, the alumni associat ion had commissioned a hostel as part of its contributions to addressing the accommodation challenges faced by the University students.

Dr. Oduwaiye traced the construction of the Alumni Secretariat to the efforts of a former N a t i o n a l P r e s i d e n t o f t h e Association and immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Is-haq O. Oloyede, who facilitated the building through the support of the former Minister of Works and Housing, the late General Abdulkareem Adisa.

She lauded the successive

leaders of the Association for their diverse contributions to the development of the body while submitting that the Association was being positioned by her dynamic team for enhanced service delivery to the University and humanity.

While commissioning the renovated offices, a former National President of the Alumni Association and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services) of the U n i v e r s i t y, P r o f . A d e d a y o Abdulkareem, commended the Oduwaiye-led administration for building on what is on ground, saying that development is a continuous exercise.

T h e D e p u t y V i c e -Chancellor, who was represented by a former Dean of Science at the University, Prof. B. L. Adeleke, urged the Alumni body not to rest on its oars but continue to initiate

projects and activities that would support the University's drive to being better by far than others.

While appreciating the d igni ta r ies for grac ing the commissioning, the National General Secretary of the body, Dr Mahfouz Adedimeji, canvassed the support of all alumni members in order to accomplish the set goals of the Association. He said that as no association can be greater than its members, the alumni members at home and abroad should join hands with the leaders of the Association to make more impact on the University.

The occasion was attended by all members of the National Executive Committee, including Dr

stM. A. Abdullahi, 1 Vice- President;

ndMr. Wale Fashakin, 2 Vice-President; Barr. Mutiu Agboke, Ass i s tan t Nat iona l Genera l Secretary; Mr. Taiwo Oluwatoba, National Treasurer; Alh. A. O. Muhammed, National Financial Secretary; Mrs. Oluwayemisi Mafe, National Publicity Secretary; Dr. L. F. Oladimeji, National Social Secretary; Dr R. O. Oparinde, National Auditor I and Mr Abraham Adavi, National Auditor II.

Also in attendance were the immediate past National General Secretary, Prof. L. A. Yayaya; immediate past National Treasurer, Mr. M. Adesina, the Kwara State Chairman of the Alumni Chapter, Dr. BOB Olokoba as well as other dignitaries.

Smoking causes lower back pain

Apart from causing cancer and heart diseases, smoking can cause lower back pain also. Tobacco decreases the blood flow to the spinal cord, which leads to disc degeneration. Smoking stops the delivery of nutrients to the lower back. Smoking delays the healing of injuries and prolongs recovery from lower back pain.

Responsible unionism as a calling

Prof. Abdulkareem's well-deserved appointment

…To our brand new Profs, bravo!

The recent appointment of the erudite Professor of Educational Management, Adedayo Yusuf Abdulkareem as the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services) has been hailed across the

University campus as a round peg in a round hole. Prof. Abdulkareem, who is the immediate past Director of the Institute

of Education (IOE), University of Ilorin, is bringing into his new office a rich pedigree of commitment to service excellence. Feelers from his last duty post show that he is an astute manager of men and resources.

Town & Gown heartily congratulates this man of letters and wishes him Allah's protection and guidance in his new assignment.

he University of Ilorin management has again demonstrated its commitment to acknowledging and rewarding excellence with the recent release of the promotion/appointments of 43 new Professors and

96 Readers.Like the Chief Imam of the University, Prof. A.G.A.S. Oladosu, said in

his Juma'at Sermon last Friday (March 18, 2016), the attainment of the Professorial rank, though “ highly washable”, does not really call for frivolous celebrations. It is a call to higher duties, which must be discharged with the fear of the Almighty God. To the new eggheads, Town & Gown says bravo and more power to your elbows!

T

of Universities (ASUU) is heart-warming. It is an unambiguous reassurance that the University is indeed poised for greater heights.

The new ASUU Chairman, Dr. Usman Adebimpe Raheem, a veteran unionist from his student days, told the Vice-Chancellor during the maiden meeting of the new ASUU officials with the University management that “this is the continuation of the last executive. We are on the same page with the administration and we have made a choice against forces of destabilization. We believe in stability and we must actively maintain the momentum in place”.

T h e A S U U C h a i r m a n , however, told the Vice-Chancellor that while the Union intends “to be as friendly as possible”, it “would also be as forceful as possible when it comes to members' welfare matters. For instance, he said, “When we ask for what is due to us, we may not insist on 100 percent, but we will push for and ensure that we get 99 percent”.

And of course, the Vice-Chancellor assured the Union that its cooperation would be

adequately reciprocated, saying, “The management is ready to cooperate with you and we will make your work easier and apparent”.

Indeed, the Unilorin Chapter of ASUU has continued to enthrall me each time I review its activities. It is the first university workers' union in the country to empathize with the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) with its recent donation of over N3 million to the unfortunate victims of the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-eastern part of the country. The Union had, earlier in 2011, made monetary donations to the victims of the Tsunami earthquake in Haiti. It should be noted that these donations were not from the Union's check-off dues but special contributions by members from their salaries. Also, Unilorin ASUU is the first university staff union in the country to build students' hostel in a move aimed at helping the University management to tackle the chronic accommodation challenges facing students on campus.

No doubt, this is the hallmark of responsible unionism!

As I was sieving through my notes in preparation for this write-up last weekend, the

philosophy of Jeremy Bentham, the th

19 Century English jurist and social reformer, flashed through my mind. Of particular interest to me was the “fundamental axiom” of his “greatest happiness of the greatest number” dictum. And I quickly realised that the espousal of this philosophy by all stakeholders at the University of Ilorin, especially its workers and management, has been the critical factor responsible for the enduring peace, stability and giant strides being witnessed at the University.

Nothing better demonstrates this commitment to ensuring the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people than the unity of purpose between the University management and the various staff unions. Joined like Siamese twins in a single-minded strive for excellent service delivery, it is not surprising that the Unilorin workforce and the University administration have continued to set good examples, in the country, on how to run a world-class university. And as I stated in a previous outing of Town & Gown, “the culture of conscientious leadership and supportive followership is so contagious at the University of Ilorin that sundry staff unions have invariably become partners in progress with the management as against the cat-and-mouse syndrome that often characterises the relationship between workers and managements in many universities in the country”.

As the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), often says, the raison d'être of the University, any university, is the student populace, and, according to him, everything must be done to ensure that the students' interests are served at all times. In this regard, the recent reaffirmation of commitment to a stable academic calendar in the University by the local Chapter of the Academic Staff Union
