Any child having their 5th birthday on or before October 15th 2011 is eligible to enter Kindergarten in the fall. Please call Miller School at 832-2103 or stop by the office to register your child.

Principal’s Pride
At Union Elementary School this week, I am proud of the science experiments that make learning fun. In Donna Munro’s 4th grade classroom, students were very eager to share their
learning of how fossils are made!
Halloween RaffleUnion Elementary School’s PTC is holding a Halloween Raffle to
benefit the PTC. The Halloween themed raffle items will be displayed in the lobby on Monday. Tickets are on sale in the
office for $.25 each or 5 for $1.00. The drawing will be held on Tuesday, October 29th. Good luck, everyone!
NewslettersFor those of you who have
requested paper newsletters, we are only sending one home per family with the
oldest sibling. Please contact Allison in the office if you would like to change that
plan.
Magazine DriveThe annual Union Elementary School Magazine Drive will end on Monday! Our school receives 40% of all magazine sales. In the past, that money has been used for field trips and classroom supplies that weren’t included in the school budget. If you pay by check, please make the check payable to Union Elementary School. You can also purchase magazines online if you would like to pay with a credit card. The online site is www.aphearst.com. Click on “Shop Now” and enter the online code of WB2782 and the student’s name. Extra booklets and forms are available in the office. If you have any questions about the magazine drive, please call Allison at the school. The last magazine drive turn-in day is Monday, October 22.
Family Movie Night @ UESPlease join us for movie night in the gym on Friday, October 25th
@ 6:00 PM. We will be showing the movie Hotel Transylvania, rated PG. The Parent Teacher Group will provide beverages and popcorn. We ask that each family that comes bring a treat to
share…cookies, brownies, cupcakes, etc. Please plan to stay and watch the movie with your child. Feel free to bring a blanket or lawn chair! Please call Michelle @ 975-2012 with any questions.
Great Pumpkin Raffle
Mrs. Munro’s 4th grade class is holding the annual Great Pumpkin Raffle! The drawing will be held on
Monday, October 28th. The raffle tickets are 10 cents each and will be sold in each classroom beginning on Monday, October 21st. Buy a ticket and you might win a pumpkin! All
proceeds from the raffle will be donated to a charity (yet to be
determined).

Bruce Roberts Toy FundFor those of you not familiar with the program, The Bruce Roberts Toy Fund has been making winters happier for children in Maine since 1949. They supply toys to children in every community in the five counties serviced by the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram~ York, Cumberland, Sagadahoc, Lincoln and Knox. Thousands of children benefited from the toys they supplied last year. They provide gifts for children from birth to age 18 that are age appropriate and safe. Families need to fill out applications and mail them back to the address on the application by November 1st to be able to qualify for The Bruce Roberts Toy Fund. Applications will be available in a folder right in front of the office here at the school.
Medomak Valley Boys Winter Youth Basketball Program 2013-2014
Any boy in grades 3-6 that is interested in playing basketball this winter. There will be a Boys Youth Basketball Program beginning November 2, 2013 and ending January 25, 2014.
There will be 2 basketball clinics: November 2, 2013 at Medomak Valley High School.Grades 3/4 will be from 8:00-9:30 a.m. and Grades 5/6 will be from 9:30-11:30 a.m.
The second clinic will be November 9, 2013 and it will be held at Medomak Valley High School. Grades 5/6 will be from 8:00-10:00 a.m. and Grades 3/4 will be from 10:30-12:00 p.m.
Registration will take place at one of the 2 clinics on November 2 & 9. The cost is $30.00 per child (family discounts) and please make checks payable to Medomak Valley Boosters Club.There will be weekly games and practices, 3 on 3 tournament, playoffs and an awards night. October is Fire Safety MonthUES students are learning about fire safety
and about how to call 9-1-1 in case of emergency. Today Union firefighters
presented fire safety lessons to all classes and demonstrated the purposes of equipment on
three of their fire trucks. Firefighters reminded students to carry three messages
home:
•Be sure you have working smoke and fire detectors •Practice home escape routes and be sure everyone knows where to meet together outside. •Post 9-1-1 and other emergency numbers near the phone that children should use to call for help.
Hope Community Craft Fair Hope School Volunteers is
sponsoring the Hope Community Craft Fair which will be this
Saturday October 19th from 9-2 at Hope Elementary School.
Free Admission. Raffles. Over 20 vendors including jewelry, quilted
items, photography, mittens, hats, ornaments and much more! The 8th grade class will also be
providing a luncheon as a fundraiser for their class trip.
School Bus Safety Week October 21-25Next week is School Bus Safety Week with Friday the 25th being School Bus Driver Appreciation Day! We are privileged here in Union to have 4 excellent bus drivers, Louise Allen, Darlene Gilligan, Mike Ledger and Kitty Brown and one wonderful Transportation Supervisor, George Bridges. Our students are very well taken care of before and after school by these important people and we would like to take this opportunity to recognize and appreciate them publicly.
Donations needed
The UES PTC group would really appreciate donations of “new or like new” items for the upcoming Halloween Raffle. The PTC has many holiday themed raffles throughout the school year as fundraisers to benefit our school. Any donations would be welcomed. Thank you for your help.

American Red Cross Safety ClassesNote: If taking one Red Cross class, the cost is $54/$59 non-‐resident; if taking two classes, the cost is $64/$69 non-‐resident. Classes are held in the MVHS Library.Pediatric (Child/Infant) CPR/AEDLearn to recognize the signals of a cardiac emergency in a child or infant (birth to age 12) as well as the signs of breathing and choking emergencies and how to care for them. Two year Red Cross certi[ication for successful completion. Class meets Tuesday, 10/22 & 10/29 from 6:00-‐8:00 pm. First AidThis class will show you how to identify the signals of common sudden illnesses and how to care for them. Learn how to care for someone having a seizure, heat and cold related emergencies, musculoskeletal and soft tissue injuries, how to control external bleeding, head, neck and spinal injuries. Class meets Tuesday, 11/5 & 11/12 from 6:00-‐8:00 pm.
Punch Needle Rug Hooking Class & Group with Holly BerryIntroductory Class – Getting HookedChoose from pattern options or design your own, along with a variety of colorful wool rug yarn. A materials fee of $30 is payable to the instructor. Begins Wednesday, 10/23 from 6:00-‐8:00 pm for 6 weeks. Fee: $49/$54 non-‐resident. Computer – Next Level with Teresa JohnsonIf you have mastered the basics of your computer, join us for some more advanced topics such as [inding and organizing [iles, the various ‘save’ features and system maintenance. Learn the basics of effective web-‐browsing and [inding your way through the maze of websites available to you. There will be time built into each session for questions and answers. Preparing Your Estate Plan with Jerod CronkiteDo you know where your assets will go when you die? If not, this seminar will help familiarize you with the basic steps of estate planning, including the function of a will and the different types of trusts. An attorney will be present at this event. Class meets Tuesday, 10/29 from 6:00-‐7:30 pm. Fee: $9/$14 non-‐resident. MVHS Room 26.
Earn Your GED Diploma!!! GED Preparation Classes with Beth Pope and Michelle McAnaney Start the process today of earning a high school equivalency diploma! GED classes offer intake, assessment and practice testing for the GED (General Educational Development) tests. Even though GED classes have start and [inish dates, you may join us and begin any Wednesday throughout the school year at MVHS from 6:00-‐8:00 pm (with the exception of school vacation weeks). This program is FREE of charge. NOTE: Beginning in January 2014 the GED test battery will change, and all testing done prior to that date that did not result in earning a GED diploma will become invalid. If you have successfully taken and passed one or more of the OfOicial GED Tests, come in today and Oinish what you started while there is still time! Spread the word! Call 832-5205 for more info!
Health Office NewsletterOctober 15, 2013~Stress Relief ~
Heading back to school can be stressful for parents and students alike. By now, you should have a routine set up so that students can get to bed at a reasonable time, eat regular meals and be prepared for their school day. Help lower stress by making changes where you can:
Make a schedule that allows enough time for school, work and relaxation and set your priorities.Exercise regularly – Its one of the best ways to relieve stress. Walk, swim or ride a bike. Even if it is for 15 minutes a day, take the time for yourself.Do something at least once a week just for fun with the family. Plan quiet time too.Eat a healthy diet, which helps your body deal with stress. Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. Go for healthy snacks and avoid junk food.Have a busy schedule? Slow down… Having too much to do is a huge cause of stress. Consider cutting some things out of your busy schedule. Decide what’s most important to you. Talk it out – If you feel like things are just too much to handle, you can get help by talking with a counselor or your healthcare provider.
