DESCRIPTION
new work by Frankie Slaughter
Citation preview
Frankie Slaughter's recent paintings, video, sculptures and installation adopt the language of abstraction in lively and enticing ways. Her vivid constructions record the visual language of fleeting, everyday experience in intersecting tones, fluid lines, balanced hues, and refracted light. They capture transition itself and the experience of time -- our time together, your time seeing, and moments that slide from one view to the next. These works, like the silent whir of a pinwheel whose distinct images, memories, and sounds whiz and coalesce, compel us to explore their rich surfaces.
Heather McGuire, PhD (VCU), teaches modern and contemporary art history at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her dissertation explored John Baldessari's extended series entitled!Blasted Allegories!(1977-78).

UNRAVEL
My current body of work is a process-based investigation that finds form in color, paper, clay, and video. Substrates of my life experiences: East and West, line and swath, gathered and untethered.
The fragmented nature of the works is a result of the fleeting moments I am able to capture and the very materials used, materials that are structurally challenged by how I underscore and manipulate their dual characteristics. Thread, for example, is at once a binding element and a fragile link.
As I unravel the layers typically obscured by our daily existence, I stitch together textures and patterns of my own and our collective histories, embracing the imperfections as I move closer to the center.
