Downloading and running the Pre-Upgrade Checker Note: To run this application, you need your SQL Administrator (sa) password.

Downloading the Pre-Upgrade Checker 1. Download the self-extracting file (upgrade-checker.exe) to your Destiny application server from

https://www.follettsoftware.com/customerportal/downloads.cfm.

Download it to a directory outside of your existing \FSC-Destiny folder. Important: Do not download it to your \FSC-Destiny folder.

Important: Donot download it toyour \FSC-Destinyfolder.

2. Extract (unzip) the downloaded file to the root of your existing \FSC-Destiny folder, as shown below.

Important: Extract it to the root of your \FSC-Destiny folder.

Extracting the upgrade-checker.exe creates a folder named \upgrade-checker inside the \FSC-Destiny folder. If you have upgraded previously, this folder already exists. The Self-Extractor prompts you to overwrite the existing files when extracting. Please accept this option. Important: For the application to function properly, you must extract the file to the

existing \FSC-Destiny folder in your current Destiny installation, even if it is not on the C:\ drive as shown in the example.

What does the Pre-Upgrade Check actually check?

System Checks • Hardware/Memory

It checks the amount of RAM on the application server and database server. Note: The application reports RAM as two separate amounts, one for the application server, and one for the database server.

• Operating System and Service Packs • Microsoft Windows Critical Updates

Destiny Checks • Destiny version Must be version 9.8

The Pre-Upgrade Checker and the Upgrade application are designed specifically for upgrading from Destiny v9.8 to v9.9.

SQL Server Checks • Current SQL Server edition • SQL Server Service Pack • SQL Server version • Backup information

The Pre-Upgrade Checker determines when the last SQL database backup was performed. Important: Please back up your database(s) immediately before performing the upgrade to

Destiny v9.9.

Drive Space Checks • Space available on the drive where Destiny is installed • SQL Database file(s) • SQL Transaction log file(s) • Windows • System TEMP directory

Important: Do not set your TEMP directory to your FSC-Destiny directory or any directory within it.

For more information on system requirements, please see the Destiny Server Service Pack and Operating System Requirements document

The Destiny Upgrade application This application upgrades your Destiny installation to version 9.9. Important: Prior to performing this upgrade, you must reboot both the application server and the

database server.

Downloading and running the Upgrade application Before beginning the upgrade process: • To run the upgrade application, you need your SQL Administrator (sa) password. • A database backup is performed automatically during the upgrade process. The upgrade

application asks you to provide a location to store this backup, either the default location established during the SQL installation or another location you specify. Please note the location of your database backups so that you can provide this information.

Downloading the Upgrade application 1. When the Pre-Upgrade Checker has successfully completed, the application provides a link in the

report that allows you to download the Upgrade application. Download the self-extracting file to your Destiny application server. The file name is upgrade.exe.

2. Download it to a directory outside of your existing \FSC-Destiny folder.

3. Double-click the file and extract (unzip) it to a location outside of your existing \FSC-Destiny folder. We recommend you use the location of C:\Destiny Upgrade 9.9\. You can change the drive letter to extract to a different drive.

Important: Do not extract it to your \FSC-Destiny folder.

Running the Upgrade application Important: Prior to running the upgrade application, please disable any virus-protection and anti-

spyware software that may be running on the Destiny application and database servers.

Important: To protect your data, a database backup is performed automatically during the upgrade process. Before you begin the upgrade process, please temporarily disable any regularly scheduled backups (either through SQL server, the Windows Task Scheduler, or third party backup software).

1. Unzipping the upgrade.exe creates a folder named “\upgrade” inside the \Destiny Upgrade 9.9 folder (or the folder name you designated when extracting the upgrade application). Navigate to the \upgrade folder. Inside the folder, locate the file named "setup.exe" and double-click it.

Note: The application takes a few seconds to start. Do not double-click the setup.exe file again.

2. On the Upgrade v9.9 dialog, click Start.

Note: If you would like the upgrader to use a different temporary directory than your system

default, click the Advanced button and browse to a different directory. This information is not saved and must be re-entered if the upgrader is run again.

3. Enter the SQL Administrator (sa) password.

After entering the correct password, the application performs some of the same checks as the Pre-Upgrade Checker (e.g., checking for free space). If any of the checks fail, the application generates and displays a report, and the upgrade process stops. Please follow any instructions in the report carefully, and then re-run the Upgrade application. If there are no failures, no report appears; the upgrade process continues.

Important: Whenever the upgrade application is performing any background processing, a progress bar appears at the bottom of the dialog (see screenshot below). Please do not attempt to stop the upgrade application any time the progress bar is in motion.

Important: If you stop the Destiny service manually, be sure to close the Services Control Panel before continuing the upgrade.

9. The application creates a backup of the Destiny SQL database(s).

The following dialog appears. It allows you to designate a location on the database server for the backup(s) to be stored. The default location is the either the last backup location of the database or the default backup location specified by SQL Server. To change the location of a backup file, click on the path just below the database name.

10. While setting the location(s) for the database backup file(s), the application verifies that there is enough space available on the drive where the backup file resides. If there is not, the OK button is disabled and the drive letter is highlighted in red.

After you click the OK button, the installer backs up the database(s). At this point, the preparation for the upgrade is complete, and the following message appears:

The application is now ready to begin modifying the Destiny directory structure and updating the Destiny database. The amount of time required for this process depends primarily on the size of your database. For a single site database, it may only take an hour. For a large district (75 –100 sites), it could take many hours. Destiny is unavailable until the upgrade is complete. During this time, no other user interaction with the upgrade is required. You should check periodically to see if the upgrade is complete. Please note, if you monitor the upgrade via a remote desktop connection, do not close the connection until the upgrade has completed. The following message displays when the upgrade process is complete.

Important: The database backup that was made during the upgrade process will typically not be

part of your normal backup set. Please perform a full backup of the database into your current backup set before beginning to use Destiny v9.9.

Your Destiny v9.9 installation is ready to use.

Configuring your anti-virus software Because real-time virus checking of the Destiny database and application files can cause severe performance problems, you'll need to disable your virus-checker for the following files:

• On the database server, turn off virus checking on files with extensions:

MDF LDF NDF

It is important to do this by file type, as this will cover both the Destiny database and SQL server's temporary database.

• On the application server, turn off real-time virus checking on the FSC-Destiny folder.

Important: Verify the next day that your exclusions are still in effect. If you make these exclusions locally but your network is configured to use a server-based manager to centrally manage your virus software (for example, Symantec Settings Manager Service), you need to check back the next day and make sure the manager is not overwriting your exclusions. If the exclusions are missing, you'll need to contact the person maintaining the virus software to allow the exclusions.
