Useful information for sec one parents



1. There are 10 weeks in a term. Altogether there are 4 terms.

2. Week 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 will follow odd week time table.

3. Week 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 will follow even week time table.

How to read the time table?

How to read the subject acronyms?



1. PRIDE : Personal Responsibility In Daily Effort

2. The intent of PRIDE is to encourage overweight students to lead an active lifestyle rather than weight loss alone, and these students will be trained during their recess time by our PE teachers in keeping fit and healthy.

What does PRIDE stand for?



It is time set aside in the timetable for students to meet across classes and levels to organise student activities. It is also a time for Student Councillors to meet. Staff may also use this time to brief students on upcoming school events and activities.

What is Student Interaction Time for?



No. As a provision to students who have PE lessons in the morning, we do however allow them to come in their PE T-shirts in the morning (with school pants or skirt). They will have to change back to the Xinmin full uniform by the end of their recess. For students who have PE lessons in the afternoon, they are required to come to school in their full uniform and change to their PE attire during recess.

Can students wear PE attire for the entire day?



No. For the safety of our students, if the child reports sick to their teachers, they will be accompanied to the sick bay in the general office and our office staff will contact you to come down to the school to accompany your child to see a doctor or to go home.

Does the school allow my child to go home on his/her own if he/she is not well?



1. Yes, before 7.30am and after 4.00pm

2. However, during curriculum time (7.30 am - 4.00 pm), all mobile electronic device (mobile phones, iPods, iPads, Tablets or Laptops) usage is restricted to the school canteen.

3. Hand-phones (including sim card) will be confiscated for 2 weeks if students are found using them in class.

Does the school allow students to use hand-phones in school?



The school will inform parents through your mobile devices via the SNAAPP application which can be downloaded from the relevant app stores. For parents who do not have smart phones, you will be alerted via SMS.

How will I be informed if my child is late for school or is absent from school?



If the student is not at his or her class at the parade square or the classroom (on Tuesdays and rainy days) by the end of the marching music, the student will be considered late.

• 1st time late : warning

• 2nd time late : 1 demerit point

• 3rd time late : 1 hour of detention after school and 2 demerit points

• 4th time late onwards : 2 hours of detention after school and 2 demerit points

What is the punishment for late coming?



No, we seek your kind understanding to always get an MC for your child if he or she is sick and unable to attend school.

Can parents just write a letter instead of providing MC as they have medication at home?



1. If your child is sick, please consult a doctor to obtain an MC. Your child should make 3 copies of the MC: one to be submitted to the form teacher, one to the CCA teacher and one to the PE teacher.

2. If there are other forms of emergencies (e.g. the demise of an immediate family member), please write a letter to inform your child’s form teacher about the duration which your child needs to be away.

If we want to apply leave for my child, what must we do?



3. We seek your understanding not to take your child out of school for holidays during curriculum time as this would have a negative impact on his or her studies. For the period that your child is away, it is his or her responsibility to catch up on his or her academic work and assignments, and we will not be holding any make-up tests or exams in the event that your child is absent.

If we want to apply leave for my child, what must we do?



Besides examinations at the end of each semester, there will be common tests and regular quizzes, tests and other assessments to evaluate their mastery of content and skills to monitor their academic progress.

How are tests and exams like in Secondary School?



Yes. The subject teacher or the form teacher will contact you if your child repeatedly fails his or her tests. If your child is failing in many subjects, the form teachers will contact you over the phone and may even invite you down to school to discuss how we can better help your child succeed.

Will parents be informed if the child fails the tests?



The N(A) course prepares students for the N-Level examinations in 4 years. Students who do well enough can qualify to proceed to Sec 5 to take the O-Level examinations. Students who attain a certain EMB3 score or better in the N-Levels can qualify for the Polytechnic Foundation Programme or the Direct Entry to Polytechnic Programme via the ITE, and will not proceed on to Sec 5.

What is the difference between Express and Normal (Academic) besides the fact that N(A) takes 5 years?



1. The student has to score a minimum of 70% in the average across all subjects at the end of the year in order to qualify for lateral transfer.

2. Form and subject teachers must be confident that the student can cope in the higher stream and will eventually do well.

What is the criteria and possibility for transferring streams (i.e. NA to Exp, NT to NA)?



Yes, CCAs are compulsory as mandated by MOE. It is also mandated that students must participate in a school-based CCA. Personal activities such as ballet, piano lessons etc. cannot be counted as a student’s CCA. We also believe in the holistic education of every Xinmin student, and CCAs are an essential platform for students to develop themselves beyond areas in their academics.

Is CCA compulsory in Sec school? Why?



1. Sports – Badminton (Girls), Volleyball, Shooting, Rock-Climbing, Squash (2nd CCA) 2. Uniformed Groups – Boys’ Brigade, Girls’ Brigade, NCC, NPCC, St. John Ambulance Brigade 3. Performing Arts – Symphonic Band, Choir, Guzheng Ensemble, Chinese Dance, English Drama, CLDDS (2nd CCA), MLDDS (2nd CCA) 4. Clubs and Societies – Art Club, Library, Outdoor Adventure Club, English Debate, Media Club, Robotics Club (2nd CCA), Singapore Youth Flying Club (2nd CCA), Entrepreneurship (2nd CCA)

What are the CCAs in Xinmin?



2nd CCAs are additional CCAs for students who are interested in these activities. Students are not allowed to join the 2nd CCA as their only CCA, as the 2nd CCAs do not have as comprehensive a programme throughout the year as the first CCA. Students participate in 2nd CCAs on their own accord and hence would have to manage their commitments to both CCAs should they decide to join a 2nd CCA.

What does 2nd CCA mean? Can my child join it as the only CCA?



The school issues monthly letters to inform parents about upcoming events and activities. These letters are also published on our website and emailed out to you if we have your email address. On events that are not school wide, the teachers-in-charge will contact you separately. We will also use the mobile application SNAAPP to inform you on ad-hoc school events.

How are parents informed on the activities that their child is involved in? (especially ad-hoc events)
