THERE WAS NO EXCUSE to sit around this fall as the Valencia Lakes Clubhouse was fi lled with live entertainment,
lifelong learning classes, and parties. In October, the Booster Club held another amazing and successful Music and
Arts Festival. With beautiful weather at hand, the daytime event brought in over 30 artists from around the area
with the evening event seating over 350 residents at the Sounds of Soul concert. Also in October was the annual
signature event, the Monster Mash Bash Halloween Party. Th e residents enjoyed the horrifi cally amusing costumes
along with dancing to DJ Rob from Party 101. November’s schedule was fi lled with over 10 classes including the
philosophy lecture series and the astronomy series. Th e Big Show series also kicked off its season opener with Th e
Marlins at a record crowd of 248. We look forward to continuing this magnifi cent show season on January 11th
when Darren Williams comes to Valencia Lakes. December did not slow down a bit as we were all busy hosting the
Holiday Cocktail Party, Th e Holiday Bingo and the New Year’s Eve Celebration. Th e Valencia Singer’s once again
gave a tremendous performance at the cocktail party held on November 30th. On December 1st, Doug Vanderjagt
took home a fabulous grand prize at this year’s Holiday Bingo. Lastly, (literally), the New Year’s Eve party
was fabulous. Th e committee comprised of several residents who did a phenomenal job. We would like
to thank everyone in attendance at all of our events, and all of the hard working and dedicated residents.

VL WOMEN’S CLUB “WALK FOR THE CURE”Th is year’s Walk for the Cure was a great success! Th e Valenica Lakes Women’s Club
goal of raising $10,000.00 for Moffi tt Cancer Research was met thanks to the Valencia
Lakes community, sponsors and donations received. About 80 people showed up to walk
on November 3. It was a beautiful cool morning for a walk from the clubhouse up to
Aurora Lakes Drive and back. After the walk, a reception was held for all the walkers.
Walkers ate homemade muffi ns and drank coff ee and took some time to catch up with
neighbors and friends. In addition to the walk this year, a dance was held Friday night,
November 2 to also raise funds for cancer research. Th e dance also was
a big success. Residents and guests brought their own drinks and snacks
to share. DJ entertainment was provided by South Tampa DJ. Wine was
raffl ed off as well as other prizes and a 50/50 raffl e. Again, thanks to all
who donated their time to make this such a successful event. And thanks
to all those that gave donations for cancer research! Th is donation will
make a diff erence!

VL FISHING CLUBTh e Valencia Lakes Little Manatee Fishing Club is one of the most energetic clubs in our
community. Several activities are hosted by this organization including an annual Home and
Outdoor Exposition every January and a Food Fest in the spring. Th e club, when not involved
in fi shing, supports a number of environmental, conservation, ecological and educational
programs including stocking our lakes and ponds with pan fi sh (bluegills and sun fi sh)
and largemouth bass, scholarships for local high school seniors, food donations to the
Metropolitan Ministries of Tampa Bay, just to name a few.
Th e club consists of over 80 active members, including both men and women, and meets
on the fi rst Monday of every month except July. Meeting agendas include presentations by
local fi shing guides who discuss opportunities and techniques for fi shing in Tampa Bay,
the USCG Auxiliary covering boating safety, medical professionals covering how to protect
yourself from the Florida sun and how to maintain a healthy back for fi ghting that next
big fi sh. Whether you are an old salt or a novice fi sherman or woman, you should stop by
at one of their meetings, they always have something going on!

LIFELONG LEARNING CENTERBy David Unterlack/Committee Chairperson
Valencia Lakes Lifelong Learning Center sponsored a wonderful presentation by the Osher
Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) on Wednesday, November 28th at 2pm. OLLI is a nationally
recognized senior learning program associated with 117 colleges in all 50 states.
Dr. Ara Rogers, Director, facilitated the presentation. Joseph McAuliff e, adjunct faculty, kept us
spellbound with his class on “An American Story — Ulysses S. Grant”. Sixty-fi ve residents attended
this program and feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Refreshments provided by the Lifestyle
Offi ce and the wonderful baked goods prepared by our Committee members were enjoyed by all. We
hope this will be the beginning of a strong and long lasting relationship with OLLI.
Watch for VL Lifelong Learning Center’s new semester of classes beginning in January.
TRAVEL CLUB — ORLANDO HOTELS DECORATED FOR THE HOLIDAYS Sixty members of the Travel Club went on a day trip to Orlando on November
24. First stop was Disney’s Wilderness Lodge inspired by the Great American
Northwest National Park lodges from the turn of the 20th century. Our second
stop was Th e Grand Floridian, the crown jewel of Walt Disney World Resort,
a Victorian-themed hotel on the shores of the Seven Seas Lagoon. Th is hotel
is very impressive, from the entrance through the lobby to the spectacular
Christmas tree several stories high. Our fi nal stop, Th e Gaylord Palms Resort,
was breathtakingly beautiful. Th e signature atriums with gardens under
glass were decorated for the holidays with poinsettias plants and many
Christmas trees. Th e Gaylord “Ice” Show featured ice sculptures in a very
low-temperature environment—wear a parka to stay warm! Overall, it was a
festive and enjoyable day in Orlando.

severely injured in basic training. In an instance, Nick Battles, just 19 years old,
became a quadriplegic living life in a wheelchair. Over 100 residents either bought

plus an additional $655.00 was raised by auctioning poinsettias donated by a local
fl oral wholesaler.
Nick Fazio stated ‘the event could not have happened without the support of the many
Valencia Lakes residents who contributed to the success of the program by caring and
sharing – THANK YOU!’ If you missed it, Nick promises more programs like this from
