ABOUT THE COLLEGE

VHS-M.A.Chidambaram College of Nursing was started in November 1992 at the Voluntary Health Services Medical Centre, now a 465 bedded Multi Speciality Hospital. The college is approved by the Government of Tamilnadu vide their G.O.MS.No.754 dated 21.05.1991. The college is affiliated to the Tamilnadu Dr.M.G.R. Medical University and has been recognized by the Indian Nursing Council and has obtained recognition from the Tamilnadu Nurses’ and Midwives’ Council.

The college aims at training professional nurses to deliver quality nursing care to individuals, families and groups, not only in health care institutions but also in homes and community and to participate actively in nursing administration and teaching. The college conducts the basic B.Sc. Nursing

programme of 4 years duration since 1992, the M.Sc. Nursing programme of 2 years duration since 2001 and Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing Progrmme of 3 years duration since 2018 through distance mode in IGNOU.

The M.Sc. Nursing programme is intended to develop the nurses for leadership position in Nursing by strengthening and building upon the competencies acquired at the undergraduate level. It is aimed to prepare the Post Graduate nurses to function as nurse consultants, independent practitioners, specialists, educators, administrators, researchers etc in a wide variety of professional settings.

In the current academic year, the following branches of studies in M.Sc(N) programme are offered in the college.

Branch I : Medical Surgical Nursing

Branch II : Paediatric Nursing

Branch III : Obstetrics and Gynaecological Nursing

OBJECTIVES

The graduate of the M.Sc. Nursing programme will be able to:

• function in advanced level in wide variety of professional settings to provide comprehensive nursing care to the individual, family and community with competence.

• Utilize/apply the concepts, theories and principles of nursing science

• Practice as a nurse specialist.

• Demonstrate leadership qualities and function effectively as nurse educator and manager.

• Demonstrate skill in conducting nursing research, interpreting and utilizing the findings from health related research.

• Demonstrate the ability to plan and effect change in nursing practice and in the health care delivery system.

• Establish and maintain effective working and collaborative

relationships with other health professionals.

• Demonstrate interest in continued learning for personal and professional advancement.

• Demonstrate a commitment to the nursing profession by involvement in activities which contribute to the development of nursing profession.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

• The minimum educational requirement is a pass in B.Sc Nursing / B.Sc Hon. Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc Nursing with minimum of 55 % aggregate marks from an Institution which is recognized by the Indian Nursing Council.

• The candidate should be a Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife in Tamilnadu Nurses and Midwives Council.

• The minimum work experience required after Basic B.Sc Nursing is one year.

• The minimum work experience for the candidates who have done Post Basic B.Sc Nursing is one year before or after the Post Basic B.Sc Nursing Programme.

• Candidates should obtain an eligibility certificate from the Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University, Chennai.

• Candidate should be medically fit.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

The application form with the prospectus can be obtained from the Principal, VHS-MAC College of Nursing, VHS, TTTI Post, Chennai 600 113 with a requisition letter and a crossed demand draft of Rs.750/- towards application and registration fee drawn in favour of “VHS-M.A.CHIDAMBARAM COLLEGE OF NURSING” from any nationalized bank payable at Chennai or the application form can be submitted online by paying the registration fee online. • All the columns should be filled.

• Full name of the candidate as given in the school record should be stated in the application form, all other related forms and correspondences.

• The following should be enclosed along with the application.

* B.Sc Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc Nursing degree certificate

* General educational qualification certificate (H.Sc or its equivalent)

* University mark list for B.Sc / Post Basic Nursing Programme

* Registration certificate for Nurse and Midwife / alternate course (For male candidates)

* Experience certificate after B.Sc Nursing Course

* Transcript of the B.Sc / Post Basic B.Sc Nursing programme

* Medical fitness certificate from registered medical practitioner.

* No objection certificate from the present employer to undergo the two years P.G Programme

* Relieving order from the last employer

Enclose only copies of certificates. DO NOT ENCLOSE ANY ORIGINAL CERTIFICATE. Copies of the certificates once submitted will not be returned.• The information given in the application form should be factual.

• False information in the application form or suppression of any factual information will result in the candidate being disqualified irrespective of the stage of the course at which the candidate may be at the time of detection.

• The Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University also will verify the eligibility of the candidate.

• The application form duly completed in all respects and with the recent passport size photograph affixed should reach the Principal VHS-MAC College of Nursing on or before the specified date.

• Belated or incomplete application without necessary enclosures will be rejected.

• Quote your application number as a reference in all further correspondences.

• Application fee or registration fee once paid will not be refunded.

MODE OF SELECTION AND ADMISSION

For the Management quota, the eligible candidates will be called for an entrance test and an interview will be scheduled. The candidates will be selected in order of merit on the basis of marks obtained in the entrance test and the interview held thereafter. At the time of interview, the candidate must bring all necessary certificates in original and the physical fitness certificate from an authorized medical officer.

At the time of admission, the candidates have to submit the Eligibility certificate from the Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and those candidates who have obtained their undergraduate degree other than the Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, 69, Anna Salai, Guindy, Chennai – 600 032 should submit the Migration certificate.

Registration of the candidate’s name with the Tamilnadu Dr.MGR Medical University will be processed after admission to the M.Sc. Nursing Degree Course. The candidate will have to submit the prescribed application form to the university along with the prescribed fee.

MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION

English shall be the medium of instruction for all the subjects of study and for examinations of the Master of Science degree in Nursing.

PROGRAMME DETAILS

The duration of the M.Sc Nursing programme is two years. Any deficiency in the number of days must be compensated. Each academic year shall consist of not less than 280 working days. The date of commencement

of the programme will be duly intimated to the candidates. University examinations are conducted at the end of each year. The curriculum and the syllabus for the course shall be as prescribed by the Tamilnadu Dr.MGR Medical University and is subject to modification from time to time.

ATTENDANCE

No candidate will be admitted to the University Examination unless she has put in attendance not less than 80% (Subject to change as per the University norms) in theory and practical in the relevant subjects every year.

Since “hands on” experience is a major component of Nursing Education, students who miss any part of the theory and clinical experience will be required to compensate. A candidate must have 100% attendance in each of the theory and practical areas before award of degree.

Course completion certificate will be issued only after obtaining 100 % attendance in all subjects.

APPRAISAL

Performance of the student is assessed by the system of:• Quarterly submission of internal assessment marks to the University

• University examination at the end of each year in the subjects prescribed for the year. The internal assessment grade will be added to the external assessment grade in subjects placed for university examination.

• The student is expected to maintain high standard in academic and clinical performance throughout the programme

MARKS QUALIFYING FOR A PASS

A candidate shall be declared to have passed the examination if she obtains the following qualifying marks:

• 50% of marks in each of the theory paper and practical separately.

• If a candidate fails in either theory paper or practical, she has to

reappear for both papers (Theory and Practical)

• A candidate who has passed all subjects in the I year will only be permitted to appear for final (second) year examination.

• The maximum period to complete the course successfully should not exceed 4 years.

SUBMISSION OF PRACTICAL RECORD BOOKS

At the time of practical examination, each candidate shall submit to the examiners her practical record book duly certified by the Head of the Department as a bonafide record of the work done by the candidate.

The concerned Head of the Department shall evaluate the practical record (internal evaluation) and the practical record shall be submitted to the Principal 15 days prior to the commencement of the theory examination. This will be presented to the external examiner during the practical examination.

The candidate shall have a record of clinical work done duly attested by the Head of the College before being admitted to the examination.

Completion of practical records (Log Book) is a mandatory requirement for appearing for the concerned practical examination.

UNIFORM AND BOOKS

The candidates are expected to have the prescribed uniforms, text books, and record books for the entire course.

FEES AND PAYMENT

Tuition fees and other fees of each year should be paid at the beginning of the year. The exact fees to be paid by students will be made known at the time of selection / admission. No student will be allowed to attend classes unless she complies with all the admission requirements and pays all the fees for the year.

Fees specified by the Tamilnadu Dr.M.G.R Medical University towards registration, examination, mark lists, sports, library etc..will be informed on admission.

GENERAL INFORMATION

• Fees, once remitted, will not be refunded.

• Students who voluntarily withdraw from the college shall be required to pay full fees for the entire course.

• The college does not take any responsibility for the loss of personal property. Students should not keep valuable goods such as jewellery and if they do so it will be at their own risk. The Management will not be responsible for any loss.

• Students are required to wear the uniform during their clinical experience.

• Vacations are planned according to the programme. If a student is not able to return on time due to illness, the Principal should be intimated immediately, followed by a written explanation. On return, she should submit a medical certificate issued by a registered medical practitioner stating the full details of her illness and treatment. Students are not eligible for any kind of leave.

• Absenting without prior permission will be viewed seriously. For any day of absence without prior permission, the student has to compensate as instructed before the end of the academic year.

TEACHING / LEARING FACILITIES

The college believes in providing a conducive atmosphere to facilitate learning. The college, an attractive building, is set in a beautiful surrounding. It has spacious classrooms and well equipped demonstration rooms and laboratories.

Facilities of the Voluntary Health Services hospital is utilized to provide a wide range of clinical experience. In addition, students get experience from various other medical institutions and community health centers as per programme requirements.

A spacious library with all necessary books and journals is available. Related current printed materials will be added from time to time.

Xeroxing facility is available on payment. Students are expected to make full use of the library resources. Computer with internet facilities is available in the hostel.

Students get guidance from well qualified and experienced faculty. Faculty expertise is also available for personal counseling. Educational tours as per the programme requirement will be arranged. Faculty mentors provide mentoring services.

HOSTEL

The female candidates will be provided hostel accommodation on request. There are single and double sharing rooms available. The students residing in the hostel are expected to abide by the rules and regulations of the hostel and are accountable to the Warden / Housekeeper. A booklet of hostel rules and regulations will be given on admission.

RECREATION AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

Recreation facilities are provided with a view of encouraging students to take interest in keeping themselves physically fit and mentally alert and in getting added vitality for meeting the demands of nursing education and practice. Participation in sports and games facilitates development of friendly competitive attitude. Students are encouraged to make use of these facilities. Regular Sports and Yoga classes are conducted. Students’ participation in various competitions organized by the institution is encouraged. The college has very active Student Nurese’ Association(SNA) unit, National Service Scheme (NSS), Voluntary Blood Donor’s Club (VBDC) , Youth Red Cross (YRC) and Red Ribbobn Club (RRC) units and regularly organize programme for the students. The Post Graduate students are encouraged to witness and take part in all college activities.
