MEN’S & WOMEN’S TENNIS Afterhavingtheirfirstmatchpostponedduetorain,theVikingswillcontinuetheirSpringTrainingTripwithatleasttwomorematchesthisweek. ThemenwillfaceStetsonat2:30p.m.onTuesday(March13)andFloridaAtlanticat2:00p.m.onWednes-day(March14),whilethewomenwillalsoplayFloridaAtlanticonWednesdayandAlbanyat2:00p.m.onThurs-day(March15).CSUwasscheduledtoplayEmbry-Rid-dleonSunday,butduetorainintheareathematchwaspostponed and the two teamswill try to reschedule thecontestforlaterthisweek.
SOFTBALL TheVikingswillstayinFloridatotakepartintheRebelGamesthisweek,playingeightgamesoverafive-dayspan.CSUwillopenplaywithBryantandNebraska-OmahaonMonday(March12)andwillthenfaceManhattanandFair-leighDickinsononWednesday(March14).WagnerandHowardwillbeupnextonThursday(March15)beforeCSUclosestheweekwithLafayetteandRideronFriday(March16). ClevelandStatewent0-5overtheweekendattheUnderArmourShowcase,hostedbySouthFlorida.TheVikingoffensestruggledearlyinthetournament,postingtworunsintheirfirstthreegamesbeforebreakingoutforsixrunsinalosstoCanisius.Theweekendconcludedwitha3-2losstoWagner,agameinwhichtheVikingshadsevenhits.
MEN’S BASKETBALL TheVikingswillheadtothepostseasonforjusttheseventh time in program historywhen the sixth-seededVikingsopenplayinthe2012NationalInvitationalTour-namentatthird-seededStanfordonTuesday(March13)at11:00p.m.EST.ThiswillbethefifthtriptotheNITforCSUwiththeVikingsowninga3-4recordall-timeinthetournament. ClevelandStatewillbeledbythetrioofTreyHar-mon,D’AundrayBrownandAntonGrady,whoallearnedHorizonLeaguehonorsthisseason.Harmonearnedaspoton the all-league second team and all-defensive team,while Brown joined him on the all-defensive team andGradywasnamedtotheall-newcomerteam. ThreeVikings are averaging doule-digit points ontheseason;Harmon(12.9ppg),Brown(11.0)andJeremyMontgomery(10.8),whileTimKamczycisclosebehindwith9.0pointspercontest. TheVikingslastplayedonMarch3whentheyfelltoDetroit intheHorizonLeagueChampionshipsemifinalsandentertheNITwitha22-10overallrecord.Tuesday’sgamewillmarkthefirst-evermeetinginmen’sbasketballbetweentheVikingsandtheCardinal.
Men’s Golf opens sprinG season at BenBow invite
Cleveland State opens the spring season this week when the VikingscompeteattheBenBowInviteinJacksonville,Fla.,onMondayandTuesday(March12-13). TheVikingsenjoyedasolidfallseason,includingthreeconsecutivetop-fivefinishestoendtheseason.TheduoofJuniorMichaelKlaricandSopho-moreAndrewBaileypacedtheVikingsduringthefall,Klaricaveraginga73.8perroundandBaileywithateam-best73.4scoringaverage. KlaricandBaileywillbejoinedbyjuniorJonRiemer,sophomoreBrendanByrneandfreshmenMikeBalcar,KeithBrooksandNickPaxosduring thespringseason.
WOMEN’S GOLF TheVikings will kick off the 2012 spring seasonthisweekastheytraveltoJacksonville,Fla.fortheBut-lerBenBowInviteonMonday(March12)andTuesday(March13). JuniorArielSparrow led theVikingswith an80.4scoringaverageinthefall,includingacareer-lowroundof73attheZippyInvitational.Sparrow’sclassmate,LisaBarber, averaged82.2per round in the fall, includingacareer-low76ontwooccasions. Thetwoupperclassmenarejoinedontherosterbyatalentedquartetof sophomores-SteffCamarata,MicaelaCronin, Shelly Ford andMadelineKaminski-aswell asfreshmanColleenMiller.
FENCING ClevelandStatehostedtheNCAAFencingMidwestRegionalovertheweekendwiththewomencompetingonSaturday(March10)andthemenonSunday(March11). Alex Dickinson placed 10th in the epee contestwhileStephanieLeewas17thof20foilistsonSaturday.Thefollowingday,fourCSUmen’sfencersplacedinthetop12:TomBienvenuplaced10thinthesabregroup,onespot aheadof teammateWesMiller.LeviYoung (epee)andPhelanSpence(foil)eachtook12thintheirrespec-tiveweapons.BryanTwitchellandMikeMcDonaldtook14thand17th,respectively,inthesabrecompetition.JohnCuturicwas16thinthefoilgroup. Theeventfeaturedstudent-athletesfromClevelandState, Detroit, Lawrence, Northwestern, Notre Dame,OhioStateandWayneStateandwasofficiatedbywell-knownrefereesatthenationalandinternationallevels.

laSt WeekShalonda Winton became just the third Vi-
king in program history to record 500 points and 300 rebounds in a single season last week, following her seven-rebound effort at Detroit in the Horizon League Quarterfinals. Winton, who finished the season with 566 points and 303 re-bounds, joins Lanette Taylor (91-92) and Audra Cook (99-00) as the only players to reach the milestone.
Winton finished her junior season among the all-time career leaders at Cleveland State, rank-ing seventh in rebounds (763), 12th in scoring (1,181), second in defensive rebounds (499), fourth in offensive rebounds (264) and seventh in blocked shots (75).
