Women’s BasketBall RetuRns Home FoR tWo Contests

The Vikings will return to the Wolstein Center for two contests this week, as they host Green Bay and Milwaukee. CSU will take on the Phoenix at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 16) and the Panthers at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 18). Saturday’s contest against Milwaukee will serve as Cleveland State’s ‘Play For Kay’ game as the Vikings try to raise breast cancer awareness. The Vikings split two contests on their annual road trip to Chicago last weekend, as they defeated Loyola, 67-65 and fell to UIC, 72-50. In Thurs-day’s contest against Loyola, Shalonda Winton recorded her 1,000th point, becoming the 23rd player in program history to reach the milestone. The win also tied head coach Kate Peterson Abiad for the most wins in program his-tory, as she enters this week’s homestand with 115 victories. In Saturday’s loss to UIC, Winton notched her 700th career rebound, be-coming just the ninth player in program history to record both 1,000 points and 700 rebounds on their career.

FENCING The program hosted the John Szent Kiraly Memorial Open on Saturday (Feb. 11) - a fundraising effort named after the longtime Viking fencing master. The team is scheduled to compete next on March 3-4 at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships, hosted by Notre Dame.

MEN’S TENNIS The Vikings will hit the road once again this week-end as they travel back to the state of New York for two matches. CSU will first face St. Bonaventure on Saturday, February 18 before taking on Buffalo on Sunday, Febru-ary 19. Both matches this weekend are slated for a 1:00 p.m. start. Cleveland State picked up its first victory of the sea-son last weekend, defeating Xavier, 4-3. Playing in his first match of the spring season, senior Yannick Goossens won his No. 3 singles match and teamed up with Ben Shk-lyar to post a victory at No. 2 doubles. Nolan Marks and Matt Ford also picked up singles wins for CSU, Marks at No. 5 singles and Ford at No. 6 singles.

SOFTBALL The Vikings went 0-4 as they began the season at the Palmetto Classic, hosted by the University of South Carolina. Highlighting the weekend was the 27th career home run by junior Dara Toman, a blast that made her the new all-time leader in school history. Caila Ferro hit .462 (6-13) with a homer, three doubles and four runs scored to play her way onto the all-tournament team. CSU is off until Feb. 24 when the Frost Classic, hosted by Tennessee-Chattanooga, begins.

WRESTLING The CSU grapplers lost the final road match of the season, 45-5 to Clarion on Saturday (Feb. 11). The Vikings received wins from Ben Willeford (125) and Lawrence Cavello (149) - both via decisions. On Sunday (Feb. 19) the Vikings host West Virginia at 2:00 p.m. and the program will say farewell to seniors Cavello and Josh Palivoda, both of whom will be wrestling at Woodling Gymnasium for the final time in their careers.

WOMEN’S TENNIS The Vikings have a busy weekend ahead of them, as they are set to face two MAC opponents and Cleveland ri-val Case Western Reserve. On Friday (Feb. 17) CSU will travel to Ball State for a 6:00 p.m. match, and will then host Toledo and Case on Sunday (Feb. 19) beginning at 2:00 p.m. CSU split its matches last weekend, defeating Xavi-er 4-3 and falling to Akron, 7-0. Kara Sherwood (No. 3 singles), Alex Power (4), Nicole Janek (5) and Alex Bush (6) each recorded singles victories against the Musketeers, while the No. 3 doubles team of Sherwood and Janek also picked up a win.

MEN’S BASKETBALL Cleveland State is back in action for two games this week, starting with an 8:00 p.m. EST contest on Tuesday (Feb. 14) at Milwaukee. The Vikings then host Drexel at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday (Feb. 18) in a BracketBusters con-test that will be broadcast on ESPNU. The Vikings begin the week at 20-6 overall and in second place in the Horizon League at 10-4, just one-half game behind Valparaiso (11-3) for first place. CSU dropped contests to Valparaiso and Butler at home over the weekend. Freshman Anton Grady averaged 11.5 points and 11.0 rebounds in the two games, including a double-double ef-fort of a career-high 18 points and 13 rebounds against Butler. CSU also held the Bulldogs without a three-point field goal, the 15th time in program history that a team failed to make a three-pointer in a game against CSU. It was also the second time this year as Rhode Island went 0-for-8 against CSU on Nov. 26.

SWIMMING & DIVING The Vikings are preparing for the Horizon League Championships in Brown Deer, Wis. The event begins on Feb. 22 and runs through Feb. 25.

laSt WeekFollowing a 29-point performance at Loyola, Shalonda Winton became the 23rd player in pro-gram history to record 1,000 career points. Win-ton, who finished the weekend with 1,026 points, also became the ninth Viking to record both 1,000 points and 700 rebounds on their career with 11 boards at UIC. Winton now ranks ninth on the all-time career rebounds list at CSU with 701.
