PARISH BUSINESS

11th Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflection A lot was made in the last election about the two parties’ differing appeals to women voters. Since the ratification of the Nine-

teenth Amendment to the US Constitution, women have had the right to vote in every election. No candidate can afford to ignore more than half the population. Often the press will cite certain issues as being of particular concern to women (things like health care, violence, workplace equality, food security) as opposed to topics that the media would label as of more concern to men (defense, terrorism, banking and finance law). While legislators may find themselves attuned at one time to one part of the popula-tion, and then the other, in the end, they must respond to all of their constituents and be concerned with the common good.

The Gospel this weekend gives us an insight into the band of believers who followed Jesus in his ministry. Luke paints a por-trait of a mixed group of followers. There were the Twelve, that is the apostles, but there were also a number of women, some of whom were influential people. We know from the letters of St. Paul that in the early church men and women worked together to build up the kingdom of God by spreading the message of Christ.

In forgiving the sinful woman in the Gospel, Jesus outlines a path to be taken in achieving the common good, a path of for-giveness and healing. These are not easy virtues to exercise in the political world, which is often a cutthroat, winner-take-all type of endeavor. As Christians, it is our duty to influence our legislators on the issues that will promote the common good of all rather than the personal good of some. As Luke’s writings in his Gospel and in Acts of the Apostles points out, Christianity is a religion of community. In both our private and our public lives we profess our faith in Christ and we care for our neighbor.

Special Collection for Diocesan Priests’ Care and Support

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Father’s Day June 18-19, 2016, ther e will be a

special collection to care for our infirm and retired priests. The Fund for Diocesan Infirmed and Elderly Priests is a special way for the people of the Diocese of Joliet to express their concern for the welfare of those who have dedicated their lives in service to our pastoral care.

The money in this fund goes toward priests who need help with extraordinary medical expenses or suffer a cat-astrophic illness. It also provides for the care of the St. John Vianney Villa, home to several retired priests in the Diocese of Joliet.

As we celebrate this Jubilee Year of Mercy, prayerful-ly consider making a donation to help our aged and sick priests as an expression of appreciation for all they have done in exemplifying Christ’s mercy, through their spir-itual guidance and celebration of the sacraments.

On behalf of all the active and retired priests of the diocese, I am grateful for your prayers and for your gen-erous support of the Father’s Day Collection for our aged and infirm diocesan priests. Please be assured of my prayers for you.

Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet

FAITH FORMATION

Faith Matt-ers By Matt Pozen—Director of Parish Faith Formation

The History and Development of the Mass (June 12, 2016) Last week I began this series on the history of the Mass by summarizing what the New Testament reveals about the

Eucharist and its early development (30-100 AD). The earliest reference to the Eucharist outside of the New Testament is in a work called the Didache, which most scholars date to circa 100 AD. In fact, this is the earliest evidence of this central Christian ritual being called “the Eucharist” (which is Greek for “the thanksgiving”). Chapter 14 says: “Every Lord’s day gather together, and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure.” Notice how at this early date already the Eucharist is being called a “sacrifice”.

The Didache goes on to give instructions about the words of thanksgiving which are to be said over the bread and wine: “Now concerning the Eucharist, give thanks this way. First, concerning the cup: ‘We thank you, Father, for the holy vine of David your servant, which You made known to us through Jesus your Servant.’ And concerning the broken bread: ‘We thank you, Father, for the life and knowledge which You made known to us through Jesus your Servant.’” Notice the general nature of the thanksgiving over the bread and wine, and that there is no reference to Jesus’ words at the Last Supper (known as the institution narrative). We are not told in the Didache who is to preside at the Eucha-rist, but the author does say: “Permit the prophets to make Thanksgiving as much as they desire.”

Next we turn to the letters of bishop Ignatius of Antioch (in modern-day Syria), written circa 110 AD. On his way to martyrdom in Rome, he writes to the churches in several cities along the way. In his letter to the church in Smyrna he writes: “See that you all follow the bishop, even as Jesus Christ does the Father, and the presbyters as you would the apostles; and reverence the deacons, as being the institution of God. Let no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop. Let that be deemed a proper Eucharist which is administered either by the bishop, or by one to whom he has entrusted it. Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude of the people also be; even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the catholic Church. It is not lawful without the bishop either to baptize or to cele-brate a love-feast; but whatsoever he shall approve of, that is also pleasing to God, so that everything that is done may be secure and valid.”

Ignatius is the first person to use the Greek word “catholic”, which means “universal”, to refer to the Church. Notice how by 110 AD, at least in the area of Asia Minor, there was in each city a clear three-fold ministry of one bishop, sever-al presbyters (later called priests), and several deacons. Ignatius emphasizes that only the bishop, or a presbyter that he designates, could celebrate a valid Eucharist. Here we see the church organizing itself for the “long haul” of history, moving away from a more fluid and “charismatic” understanding of ministry and the Eucharist towards a more struc-tured model.

Earlier in this same letter, Ignatius refers to Christians who are staying away from the communal Eucharist: “They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they confess not the Eucharist to be the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, which suffered for our sins, and which the Father, of His goodness, raised up again.” Already at this early date, the “catholic” Church had developed a clear belief in the Eucharist as the true “flesh” of Christ, and some who strug-gled with this belief were keeping away from it.

On another note, for the past few weeks in the bulletin I’ve been running an ad for The Biblical Institute of the Dio-cese of Joliet (BIDJ). This program of Catholic Bible study has been offered at a variety of parishes in our diocese for the past several years. Our own parish of Visitation has been chosen as the newest site, and the program will begin here at the end of September. Dr. Joan Gorski is the director of the BIDJ and an excellent Scripture scholar and teach-er, and she also enlists the help of other teachers for the program. I have taught in the BIDJ for the past five years and have found it an awesome program. If you have ever wanted to deepen your understanding of God’s word in the Bible, and you are interested in learning more about the BIDJ, I encourage you to attend one of the upcoming “Preview Ses-sions” at Visitation on June 15 and September 10, or at a few other nearby parishes on other dates. Please see the ad on next page for more details, and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

MINISTRIES

THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS FATHER HUGGINS

The Visitation Catholic Community is very blessed to have the Perpetual Adoration Chapel of our Lady, Mother of the Eucharist on our parish grounds. This holy and sacred place where many of us retreat to be in the pres-ence of Our Lord would not have been possible without the support of our pastors past and present. In 1997, Fr. Michael Lane, Visitation’s third pastor, established the Chapel. Bishop Joseph Siegel continued to encourage perpetual adoration for both adults and children alike. Fr. Scott Huggins, Visitation’s fifth pastor’s love for the Eucharist persisted with his spiritually uplifting homi-lies on the True Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and the beautiful Corpus Christi Eucharistic processions and celebrations.

As we bid farewell to Fr. Huggins, let us remember him in our prayers of thanksgiving by stopping in the Adoration Chapel and saying some prayers for him and his new assignment as Pastor of St. Elizabeth Seton in Naperville. Even though we will miss his presence here at Visitation, we know that his love of the Eucharist will continue to grow and will now be shared with his new parishioners at St. Elizabeth’s. And when we share at the feast of the Lord every Sunday at the Holy Mass, we will always remain together, as one, by receiving Christ’s Body and Blood in the Blessed Eucharist.

May Our Lord and Our Lady of the Perpetual Adora-tion Chapel continue to keep Fr. Scott Huggins in their loving care and may God continue to bless him on his new journey!

You may visit the Adoration Chapel seven days a week and 24 hours a day. Our Lord is awaiting your visit!

Divine Mercy Corner St. Faustina’s dialogue with Jesus: I saw the Lord Je-

sus, who said, “My daughter, you gave Me greater pleas-ure by rendering Me that service than if you had prayed for a long time”. I answered, But it was not to You, Je-sus, but to that patient that I rendered this service. And the Lord answered me, "“Yes, My daughter, but whatev-er you do for your neighbor, you do for Me.” (Diary, 1029)

Prayer for Priests and St. Peregrine Blessing If there was ever a need to pray and sacrifice for priests for

their preservation and sanctity it is today. In the U.S. alone, since Vatican Council II, we have lost well over ten thousand priests and vocations have dropped almost seventy-five per-cent.

Praying for priest and bishops has been the practice of the Church since apostolic times. It is a matter of revealed truth. It is a divine mandate. We read in the Acts of the Apostles: “Peter therefore was kept in prison. But prayer was made without ceasing by the church unto God for him.”

Through prayer we gain graces for priests which otherwise they would not obtain. Priests need special graces because they have extraordinary responsibilities before God. Those who are responsible for Christ’s presence on earth are to be of all people, most Christ-like. They are to be patterns of what Christ wants all of us to be.

Each Monday at 7:00 !.". and on Thursday morning after the 8:15 #.". Mass, (approximately 8:45) we pray for our or-dained. St. Peregrine blessings are offered every Monday evening after Prayer for Priests.

St. Peregrine service will be celebrated the third Monday of the month, combined with Prayers for Priests at 7:00 !.". in the church. Please remember, we need our priests for Holy Mass, sacraments, and direction in the faith. Pray for them.

Thank you Deacon Jim
