A recent application of Internet technology – Voiceover IP (VoIP): Transmission of voice over Internet

• VoIP can be understood as simply a transport

protocol for carrying voice over any packet network,usually between sites.

• More accurately, VoIP refers only to the underlyingtransport protocol that encapsulates voice traffic orvoice media streams and allows them to be carriedover data.

H.323 and SIP Protocol

• H.323 consists of a set of protocols that areresponsible for encoding, decoding, andpacketizing audio and video signals, for call

signaling and control, as well as for capabilityexchange.e.g: H .255, H.235, H.245.

• SIP is an application layer control protocol thatcan establish, modify and terminate multimediasessions or calls. It is same as H .323
