Opportunities Graduate Student Funding Opportunity As part of a multi-year NSF-Arctic Social Sciences funded archaeology project investigating native copper innovation and social complexity in northwest North America I anticipate funding two beginning graduate students (MA or PhD) starting fall semester 2012 in the Department of Anthropology at Purdue University. The funding package would include at minimum a two-year Research Assistantship (RA) (12 months in year 1 and 9 months in year 2 - includes tuition and fees). Depending on progress and status (PhD or advancement to PhD) students would be eligible for an additional 1-2 years of partial RA support, and would also be eligible for departmental Teaching Assistantships (TA) awarded on a competitive basis. If you will have completed a BA/BS or MA/MS degree in Anthropology (or Archaeology) before the start of the 2012-2013 academic year, and are interested in thesis/dissertation research that uses GIS or site-mapping software to perform spatial analysis of northern hunter-gatherer archaeology and technology, specifically native copper innovation, I encourage you to email me directly at [email protected] to learn more. The deadline for application to Purdue’s Anthropology graduate program is January 1st, 2012. Purdue is located in northwest Indiana, one hour from Indianapolis and two hours from Chicago. NSF Award Abstract: http://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward.do?AwardNumber=1108250&WT.z_pims_id=13425

A feature article detailing Dr. Mike Richards’ contribution to several forensic cases in the office of the BC Coroner. http://www.vancouversun.com/technology/Homicide+history+Coroner+anthropologist+solve+bone+mysteries/5328189/story.html Among other things, this work is a wonderful contribution to the community as well as a great demonstration of the benefits our new state of the art archaeology labs are already providing in a broad range of pure and applied research applications. Mascha Gugganig’s short film, “Hidden Practices”, is a featured post on the online edition of Anthropology News, American Anthropological Association. http://www.anthropology-news.org/index.php/2011/10/03/hidden-practices/ Comparative Canadian and Taiwanese Policy regarding Indigenous people A group of Taiwanese Indigenous university students, selected for participation by the Council of Indigenous Peoples, affiliated with the Executive Yuan (federal government), visited the Department of Anthropology on September 6. They met for an hour and a half discussion with Bruce Miller and several graduate students. Professor Miller gave a talk on comparative Canadian and Taiwanese policy regarding Indigenous people and students asked a number of questions, primarily about the interactions of various levels of government with Indigenous communities and leadership.
