“The New Year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting
to be written. We can help write that story by setting goals.”
With these good thoughts, we would like to introduce our first
issue of Skill Matters newsletter. Being the first newsletter, our
major challenge was to make it a memorable work and set a
legacy for SSOU. We want to appreciate the work of all the
coordinators who made this incredible work possible. It was a
unique experience to sort and edit the newsletter without
compromising with its authenticity.
We congratulate all the contributors for different sections such as
Students' Speak (students' interviews or opinion poll, campus
life), In and Around (visitors, events, MOU's and outside trips),
Tech-savvy (latest gadgets, technological developments etc.),

I personally believe the implementation of GST was a good initiative for India. Before
GST the government officials took advantage of the people when it came to taxation,
but after GST the system is stabilised. -Nain Pherwani; BBA Retail Management
I feel that GST is just another way to take people's hard earned money out of their
pockets and into the pockets of the government. It's a scam. -Sanjana Rawat, Bsc. Beauty and Wellness
Is the implementation of GST a good initiative for India?
There is a high chance for a nuclear war, because the situation between the two
nations (USA and DPRK) is dicey. Both the nations own powerful nuclear war heads
and are at continuous disagreement with each other.-Gagan Singh Chandok; B. Tech. Mech. A
There is next to no chance for a nuclear war in the future as the main contenders
(USA and DPRK) are led by nothing but two attention seeking clowns. -Bahul Chandwani, BBA Logistics
What is the likelihood of a nuclear war?
Out of the 20 people who were interviewed, only 5 to 7 students knew about the
LGBTQ+ community and their struggles. After making them aware about the
LGBTQ+ community, everyone expressed that the government should recognise the
rights of the community.FYI- LGBTQ+ is a community that comprises of people who
do not come under the heterosexuals' category nor the gender confines of Male and
Female. -Students' Opinion
LGBTQ+ should not get rights as it is against the Law of Nature and goes against
every chromosome of Indian culture. -Anonymous.
General consensus amongst the students is that, even though Swachh Bharat
Abhiyaan was a good initiative, it has been highly unsuccessful at a national level.-Students' opinion
Even though it may seem that Swachh Bharat Abhiyaa has been unsuccessful,
when national Icons like PM Modi and Sachin Tendulkar make the effort to get
their hands dirty and clean the surrounding, it motivates the regular individual
making it a potential success in the long run. - Abhijit Doke, BBA Logistics
Has Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan been a successful venture?
Should the Government of India recognise the rights of LGBTQ+ community?

B.Arch.-SitevisittoPuneUniversityforsketching
Students of First year B. Arch were taken to Savitribai Phule Pune University for site visit. They sketched different components of historic buildings of the university campus. This rigorous study helped them identify and nomenclate the type of masonry used for the construction, components of building and draw neat sketches of the campus. They were also taught all the joinery details on site and they made a detailed report about this visit.
BBAStudents'VisittoKSHDistriparkThe Students of BBA Ports and Terminal Management and Logistics and Supply Chain Management and B.Arch. were exposed to the real world of Import and Export when they visited KSH Distripark. Distriparks that included the three main branches of Distripark operations i.e.
Import Procedure and Storage Export Procedure and Storage Yard Operations
The students were then taken to the field to gain the first-hand experience of how the Distriparks operate. This was a great exercise to promote the application based learning by practically showing how theory concepts apply in the industry. Furthermore, this is what set SSOU one step above other Universities

IN-VOGUE
e all are always told to by our doctors, nutritionists and fitness trainers to work out daily. It's very Wgood and healthy for our body. It helps us sleep well, get energy and feel pumped up
throughout the day, reduce the risk of heart disease etc. It also helps to reduce the risk of
conditions like hypertension, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes and colon cancer. People who want to reduce
weight go on a well-planned diet and exercise. But if anyone tries to work out with a diet plan and starves
themselves, the result is going to be the opposite of what they expect. Instead of losing fat, it will increase
and the muscle percentage will decrease. We all know that exercise is good for us but we need to
understand how much intensity our body can tolerate.
A study conducted byDr. Jeffry Towbin and his team shows that endurance exercise or high intensity
exercise can have severe consequences. The study published in the American Journal of Physiology- Heart
and Circulatory Physiology; shows the effects of high intensity exercise on arrhythmogenic ventricular
cardiomyopathy (AVC). AVC is a rare disorder, which can cause sudden cardiac death during an intense
exercise, and it wouldn't show any symptoms until the person collapses. It is a genetic disorder that affects
the structural integrity of the heart wall. There have been many cases in which people collapsed in gyms
after the work out training. We have also seen some cases where some active youth were affected by this
condition. So we always have a question why and how does this happen? It is very important for all of us to
know our bodies, how much food our body can take, how much physical exercise our body can handle.
Anything in excess is harmful anything too low is harmful. It is very important to keep everything in control
in order to live a healthy life. Often when people work out way too much there is a feeling of dizziness,
nausea and headache. Obsessive exercise is not healthy; working out just to get in shape and look good is
harmful. One should work out to be healthy and increase strength. Our heart is affected if we don't do it the
right way. Study has shown that regular exercise can prevent most types of heart diseases- including
sudden cardiac arrest. A sudden cardiac arrest due to a structural or electrical problem with the heart,
dehydration, a serious potassium imbalance, magnesium or other minerals in the blood, an inherited
condition or blow to the chest. A heart attack may not necessarily be fatal, but it can trigger malfunction of
hearts electrical system and might lead to heart arrest and death. In most of these cases the hearts lower
chambers beat fast and chaotically, a condition known as ventricular fibrillation. Circulation stops and
death occurs. The heart disease often gives warning signs, like feeling dizzy, chest pain, difficulty in
breathing, or feeling more drained than usual, then call your doctor and ask for help.
It is very important for an individual to know their body. Exercise is good for the body and the heart.
Knowing the limit is also very important, what is not good for the heart is high intensity exercise that it can't
tolerate. It depends on an individual how much load can their bodies carry. Stop when your body gives you
signals. Obsessive exercise will never give right results, work out to get fitter. Eating the right food before
and after workout is also essential. Exercise will make the heart stronger if we do it the right way knowing
the limit.

CanyoupreventagingwithVitaminC?
Richa MagaviB.Sc. Beauty and wellness
Do you want to be young forever? Need to ward off wrinkles or the
signs of aging skin?
Vitamin C is one step solution to all your queries. It not only prevents aging
through its antioxidant properties but also wards off oxidative stress and
keep your cells happy, healthy and functioning well. An October 2007 study
published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that people
who ate foods rich in vitamin C had fewer wrinkles and less age-related dry
skin than those whose diets contained only small amounts of the vitamin C.
Aging is caused mainly due to oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is caused by
free radicals which can damage cell structures, hair loss and greying.
Vitamin C is thought to help fend off this aging process of hair and support
fuller hair. Taking Vitamin C on a regular basis can also help to improve your mood and reduce anxiety. Vitamin C is
not only beneficial for maintaining healthy skin but it also helps to repair and regenerate tissues, protect against
heart disease, aid in the absorption of iron, prevent scurvy, and decrease LDL or bad cholesterol and triglycerides.
Supplemental vitamin C may also lessen the duration and symptoms of a common cold, help delay or prevent
cataracts, and support healthy immune function.
Vitamin C happens to be water-soluble, which means your body does not store it for a longer time. According to
ICMR guidelines 2017 the minimum recommended amount for adults is about 40mg/day. Hence we need to take it
regularly in our diet. A daily intake of common food citrus foods lemon, orange, bitter gourd, cabbage Amla, kiwi, are
a reliable way to make sure you get your C’s. Hence take a variety of fruits and vegetables every day and fulfil your
requirement for Vitamin C every day.

5. Food:-
Ÿ Instead of consuming starch food, eat more whole grain food,
which contains more fibre.
Ÿ Stock up nuts and seeds or citrus fruits that are known to care
fatigue and stimulate alertness, and snack on those when you
feel hungry in the middle of the day.
Ÿ Eat smaller meals throughout the day rather than three big meals.
Ÿ Avoid packaged or processed food that contains a lot of sugar.
Ÿ Have sufficient liquids throughout day to avoid dehydration.

RENDEZVOUS“...InnovationistheFoundingPillarforEntrepreneurship”
How would you like to promote Innovation?
Basically, Innovation is “know how vs. know why.” If one
has a habit of asking “know why”, I think this is the first
step towards Innovation. In short, Innovation is like a
game of chess. When one plays chess, one expects the
opponent to make couple of moves that are certain. If he
makes some other move, than the expected ones, one
must have their alternative ready. Creating alternatives, is
also a way to give rise to creativity and innovation. The
most important step in Innovation is Problem Solving.
Earlier, Innovation was considered as God's gift. But, that
is not true…, the gift of Innovation can be trained and
acquired.
Your tips for an Aspiring Entrepreneur!
Innovation is the founding pillar for entrepreneu-rship.
Secondly, it is looking out for opportunities. Thirdly, the
ability to take risk. These three factor when put together
can give rise to entrepr-eneurship. In my initial days,
before starting my own company, I worked for few years
to get a fair idea about Human Resource (HR) and the
commercial field. I believe that knowledge of HR is more
important than money in any entrepreneurship.
What is the Praj- Gevo project all about?
It is a joint development agreement with an American
company, where we adopt their technology as per our
requirement. .
We follow the ideology of making every
student industry ready at SSOU. What are
your suggestions in that aspect?
It is important to teach students, the concepts of
costing, i.e. value of time and behavioural science.
Knowing how much their time is worth, they can
charge the right rates accordingly. Especially, in
service oriented courses like B.Sc. Behavioural
Science and Costing, this will help a person grow
along with skills and knowledge. These concepts will
assist in entrepreneurship and self-employment
ventures.
How much does a student's score matter
while hiring?
It depends if you are seeking employment, or if one is
hiring a graduate, who is fresh out of school,
definitely marks become usually the starting point if
scores are not taken into accounts than for screening,
it is impossible. The interview is followed by Group
Discussion (GD) and a Personal Interview (PI). If you
are already employed and seeking opportunity in
other organisation, then we check the achievements
of the candidates, their experience, level of
commitments and the add-on value they will bring to
our organisation. After these procedures, a candidate
is selected.
n his recent visit to SSOU, he interacted
and shared his experiences with the
students on how to move forward in life and
make every opportunity count.

What determined your passion for design? Tell
us about the moment when you decided this
was the way to go. I think every kid’s hero is their dad and for me my
superhero is my father. He used to work as a civil
engineer in the designing department of PWD of the
State. Our house used to be filled with some interesting
and creative books on designs. I remember the time,
when he was engaged in a project on Bridges in Mumbai.
That was the time, when I chanced upon a collection of
books on bridges of the world. I was drawn to the
colourful pictures as it fascinated me a lot. That’s how,
my interest piqued. As I grew older, my fascination
developed into my passion and that’s how I decided to
turn my passion into my profession.
Any experience you would like to share about
your college days?In those days, things were quite different. We were more
focussed in our studies and quite oblivious to whatever
was happening in the outside world. But my perspective
changed when I landed in Pune for 180 days of
professional training. That was the time, when I met
Ar.Girish Doshi. He introduced me to the world of
contemporary architecture and design. I realized that
there was so much to learn and gather knowledge about
this particular domain. I wanted to pursue my masters in
some specialization in Design.
Your perspective about an ideal smart city, say
for example, Pune.Describing an ideal smart city isn’t easy. Pune, the
Peshwa city is still burgeoning and there is humungous
development in all the different sectors. For Pune to
become a smart city, I feel we need to adhere to the
Gandhian ideas of development which are more apt
even in today’s time. Infact, smart cities should be
much smaller settlements having a balanced
relationship with surrounding nature. The city should
be able to self-sustain.
What makes your work stand out from others? The language of landscape is expressed many times by
the fundamentals of basic design. Like mentioned
earlier, minimalism, simplicity and strong sense of
space are the key factors, applied strongly in the
medium of Landscape. I think that’s what makes it so
special! But architecture has a very strong three
dimensional objects like masses that are easy to
perceive ,but difficult to achieve in Landscape- so the
job is tougher. Also, with changing times, Architecture
may wear out but the Landscape space will intensify
and transform itself.
What keeps you motivated? Every project comes with a distinctive requirements
that demands different solutions. The major setback
that I've had with goals was actually achieving them.
But in reality it's not the goal that keeps you motivated
for the long term, it's more about how you feel about
the impact of reaching those goals and being able to
reconnect with that reason daily.
How can one become a successful architect?Aspiration to create, dedication, hardwork ,
perseverance, patience and sensitivity are some of the
key factors towards building a successful career in
Architecture.
n a tete-a tete, landscape architect IUmesh Wakaley speaks about how he
changed his passion into his profession
Ar. Umesh Wakaley has made a name for himself for his
innovative and practical designs in Pune. He champions a new
understanding of landscaped architecture and the built
environment. While designing, he sees the urban fabric as an
interweaving of human activity, natural forces and designed
settings and buildings.

f you're a technophobe, you are probably wary of the Irapid way that technology has taken over our world. In
current scenario, technology seems to have its control
in every part of our life. We, probably think that giving up
on technology is the best thing for us. Well, maybe we just
need a few reasons why becoming technologically
advanced is beneficial. Take for instance –Vue. It is
currently a rage in the market! At a first glance, these
glasses appear to simply be a standard pair of spectacles.
It is the world's first pair of smart glasses that are stylish
and discreet. Available in two variants- 'classic' and
'trendy', both can be fitted with sunglasses, plain or
prescription lenses. Do not forget to check the crafty frame
that can perform a wide range of functions using a built-in
microphone and bone conduction speakers.
What makes Vue stand apart are its interesting features
like track you activity that helps to track your steps,
calories and distance, hands-free calls to stay connected,
get notified about incoming texts and emails and so on.
Not only that, you can use bone conduction audio
technology to transfer stereo sound to your inner ear
without the use of earbuds. Your ears remain
unplugged, so you can listen to music, answer calls, and
hear notifications all from your glasses. Vue ensures
you're safe whether you're a pedestrian, cyclist or driver.
And, you can do all this with a convenient touch
interface embedded into the arm of the frames.
The size of Vue is 3.7V 90 mAh and is made of Lithium
Polymer. The other components are 2-3 days standby
time on a single charge (one can talk non-stop for 5
hours without a break in the conversation) and Stereo
bone conduction speakers- that has frequency range of
20–20,000 Hz. Besides that, Vue also has 6-axis
accelerometer and gyroscope, Infrared proximity
sensor, 5 field capacitive touch pad and blue tooth is
compatible with all devices. It is also rain, splash and
sweat-resistant.
So, if you are planning to buy yourself a pair of trendy
specs… you know what to opt for.

Talking some, There are few stories,
which really touche your heart like-
a middle age man dumps his aged

deathbed and a student who
shows his gratitude to the author
after receiving help from her in his
bad time.
I thought that the author basically
tried to tell the things only from the
women's point of view, which I
believe most of the time are not
true in the real life, like husband
supporting his mother then of his
wife and a doctor who forgets the
help which he received from the
author and treats her like any other
patient - are the few stories that
portray the negative side of a man
in the book.On the whole - 'Wise

WSalute to Life by
Sudha Murthy is a
book that you'd always want to
keep by your side all through

the book is so apt that each story
will make you think wise and
otherwise. Mrs. Murthy, as
simple as she is, her stories are
from her experiences while
working for Infosys Foundation. I
started reading the book with
great enthusiasm hoping to
learn something different about
the Indian author and their take
on life. To the great extent the
book interested me to read but
after flipping a few of the pages, I
realized that it is mostly a one
sided stories that deal with social
problems which most of us
ignore in our day – to-day life.
Her stories in the book are about
3 – 4 pages each, mind you there
are 50 odd stories, which are
different from each other. They
present a moral or message that
you will easily relate to.

PASSION - O - GRAPHYAneedtochange
and failures go hand in hand! It has been ingrained in
us since our childhood! But, it sometimes gets so
difficult to comprehend. Should we fail purposely to
achieve success? Or should we compromise with the
current situation? Change my path? We are afraid of
the consequences and forgo the chance of changing
our direction.
The other day, I met my friend who wanted to pursue
her dreams of being a fashion designer. But, she
couldn't as her parents wanted her to be a doctor.
Really? But why? I have seen many of my friends
choosing a stream due to family and peer pressure.
My question is…are they happy? Will they be happy?
Why are they making so many compromises and for
whom? But, what if they fail?
These are the issues concerning most of the Gen X.
Come on man, the world has changed! There are vast
opportunities to explore. Everyone need not step
into the time trodden path. May be I would have
done better if I had taken the path chosen by my
family. These questions plague me.
How many of us are determined to turn our passion
into our career? Till the time, you have taken the first
step and work towards it .. how will you know?
Everything is possible, so long you believe and have
faith in yourself. So what are you waiting for?
Get, Set………………Go!
As I reflect, I realized how heavily I relied on the
fou r impor tan t C 's - Consequence ,
Compromise, Change and Career in my life!
It's important in everyone's life… especially mine
because it has played a major role. No doubt, it keeps
changing with every situation in life. But somewhere
it's always there and constant. And I believe even
today, I stand where I am because of the 4C's!
I have always been optimistic and tried my best to
stay grounded. I do try to get the most out of each
moment but sometimes it gets frustrated because
things weren't happening as fast as I wanted them to
be. I get dejected…. disheartened. No matter what I
do, I take time to ponder and access the situations.
Obviously, certain questions burp….Why me? Where
have I gone wrong? This setback shouldn't have
happened now. I get disheartened and dejected!
But… it happens in everyone's life! No matter what
phase you are in life, there will be moments you get
into a funk and you have to dig deep to get yourself
out. The key is to not stay there for very long and
become complacent. You have to figure out what is
causing you distress and tackle it. Sometimes, it
won't be obvious, so you may have to just completely
shut down and re-think.
We all know failures are a part of life. Also that success

Happiness is dancing,And smiles are tapping the rows.
For me, dancing is like dreaming with your feet,Making your soul and freedom meet.
To be fond of dancing, is a certain form of love?Because I recognized my internal peace
And witnessed the beauty of dove.Dancing is the closest form of magic,
To be the savior of tragic. For Tarantism,
Is the uncontrollable urge to dance? It always exchanges the sweat,
