Read the following text carefully:
People who care
Naomi Harper, 23, runs a caf in London where
lonely and unhappy people can come and talk. It opened
a few months ago and has now got quite a reputation. All
sorts drop in: Students, homeless, addicts.
She first got the idea when a drug addict turned to
her for help in the street one night. There was no one to
take him to talk properly.The caf was originally a disused shop,
owned by a local church in Archway.
Naomi now has a group of people helping out and the place funds
itself. It is called
the Open Door. It is an apt name. At college Naomis door was
always open to
anyone who needed her. Her father has spent his whole life
helping others. He is an
eye doctor who sets up camps and performs operations in
neglected areas of the
world. Naomi grew up in Iran and Afghanistan.
I did rebel against it. When I came to England, four years years
ago, I got really
tired of all this sacrificial stuff and I couldnt see why you
couldnt just get on with
your life and live for yourself. Since then religion has become
a major part in her
life and changed her whole outlook. I get fulfilment from the
work I do. My
greatest joy is when I see somebody happy.
In the past, among other activities, she has worked with her
father I Pakistan
answering phones on a student crisis line and even looked after
wounded soldiers in
Israel.
Most of Naomis friends admire her, but not all. A lot think it
is gone too far.
They think it was all right as a sideline but they cant
understand now. In their eyes I
have been wasting the last year since I left college!
