LOTS TO BE PROUD OF! At the end of last week, I was prompted by a colleague to think about and reflect on all the wonderful things happening here at Wangaratta Primary School. I was asked, what is the one thing you are most proud of in your role as Acting Principal at Wangaratta Primary School; a difficult question to answer because I was only able to pick one thing. After some reflection, I finally decided on my response which was: I am proud to be the Acting Principal at Wangaratta Primary School because of how the school continually focuses on improving the educational outcomes of all students and also because we really do have a great group of students, staff and families here at Wangaratta Primary School. Music Count Us In exists to advocate for and celebrate music in Australian Schools. Each year, MCUI brings more than half a million people together in song, with a Celebration Day that reaches into every corner of the country. The song is written by student songwriters from across Australia, collaborating with MCUI’s celebrity mentors. This week, I introduced the song to students. They may practise at home by looking up Music Count Us In Shine Together on You Tube. Our celebration this year will include a whole school sing along in the BER building as well as the choir going to the Town Square to sing with other schools for the community.

Celebration Day is November 2nd with sing time at 12.30pm.

Every Face has a Place at Wangaratta Primary School

Name: Matt Lorback 5/6 Teacher, Numeracy and ICT co-ordinator

What do you do? As Numeracy co-ordinator I plan the direction of the whole school Maths program which includes building teacher capacity and knowledge and access to the most up to date resources and practices. I work with teachers at WPS and across the region to make improvements for all our students. As ICT co-ordinator I focus on classroom practise through the use of ICT as a supporting tool. Programs such as G-Suite for Education have opened up some amazing opportunities for our learning community. I also support the use of student devices such as iPads and notebooks and coach staff and students in the use of different apps and software packages. Teaching Philosophy I believe that everyone is capable of learning and of achieving what they set out to do. With a bit of hard work and support our kids are capable of great things! I belive that learning should be fun yet challenging and we should really celebrate failures as well as success. Without failure there is no learning. The road to success is not an express route, there are plenty of bumps along the way. Finally I believe that teachers, students, parents and the whole community are in it together, we’re all learners, and can all learn from each other.

CAFÉ Strategy: Recognize Literary Elements 1 When we read, we often recognise common elements of a story that include plot, character, setting, and theme. We use these elements to help us infer what will happen next. As readers, when we identify and understand these elements, we store this information to help us remember and comprehend what the story is about. Literary elements work together to form the story and make it interesting. We learn literary elements separately, but we combine them when reading to give us a better understanding of the story. It is important that children specifically look for these elements as they first learn them. It is through exposure and practice that readers become good at using these elements to comprehend text. How can you help your child with this strategy at home? 1. When reading a story with your child, discuss the character. Begin by asking your child who or what the story is about. 2. After determining the character, see if your child is able to tell you where and when the story occurs. Ask your child how they were able to determine the setting? Did he/she use pictures, words, or infer to establish the setting? 3. Continue to read the selection and discuss with your child important events that occur in the story. Ask your child what the problem is in the story and how the problem was solved. 4. Conclude the story by talking about the theme of the story. The theme is the underlying message, or meaning, of the story. Encourage your child to use what they know about the characters, setting, and plot to help determine the theme. Thank you for your continued support at home! * Ideas and strategies are taken from: The CAFE Book, written by Gail Boushey & Joan Moser Written by: Allison Behne ©2010 www.thedailycafe.com
