Warwick Ahead Community Plan Coming together Over the last 18 months a lot of work has been going on looking at what the key concerns are for residents on the estate. Warwick Ahead has been gathering evidence on what residents can do to make the estate a better place to live and want to be – now and in the future Big Local has four main aims: Communities will be better able to identify local needs and take action in response to them. People will have increased skills and confidence, so that they continue to identify and respond to needs in the future. The community will make a difference to the needs it prioritises. People will feel that their area is an even better place to live. Warwick Ahead Community Board are now writing a 3 year plan on how to prioritise the first spending of Big Locals £1 million for the estate. The main areas that people want to improve are: More community facilities and things going on Less debt and less need for door stop lenders Better transport to and from the estate A nicer cleaner and safer environment Decisions needs to be made as to what is prioritised and what will make a long lasting difference. Currently the Board are looking at setting up a Credit Union on the estate that would give loans out to pay off door step lenders, setting up a Warwick and Knottingley community transport scheme and looking at exactly what will make the environment better. There is a lot of interest in keeping the Older Peoples luncheon club funded by Warwick Ahead going, and investing in more community events and to document the progress of the project keeping people informed in what’s going on and how they can get involved. Warwick Ahead Community Plan Coming together

Over the last 18 months a lot of work has been going on looking at what the key concerns are for residents on the estate. Warwick Ahead has been gathering evidence on what residents can do to make the estate a better place to live and want to be – now and in the future

Big Local has four main aims:

• Communities will be better able to identify local needs and take action in response to them.

• People will have increased skills and confidence, so that they continue to identify and respond to needs in the future.

• The community will make a difference to the needs it prioritises.

• People will feel that their area is an even better place to live.

Warwick Ahead Community Board are now writing a 3 year plan on how to prioritise the first spending of Big Locals £1 million for the estate.

The main areas that people want to improve are:

• More community facilities and things going on• Less debt and less need for door stop lenders• Better transport to and from the estate• A nicer cleaner and safer environment

Decisions needs to be made as to what is prioritised and what will make a long lasting difference. Currently the Board are looking at setting up a Credit Union

on the estate that would give loans out to pay off door step lenders, setting up a Warwick and Knottingley community transport scheme and looking at exactly what will make the environment better. There is a lot of interest in keeping the Older Peoples luncheon club funded by Warwick Ahead going, and investing in more community events and to document the progress of the project keeping people informed in what’s going on and how they can get involved.

If you would like to stand for a place on the Community Board please call Judi on 07901 686142 for a nomination form prior to the meeting.

New Blog for the Estate

Warwick Ahead Board member and resident Andy Cable joined the Big Local Social Media Group and has been flying the flag for Warwick Estate down in London. Andy has set up a Warwick Ahead blog and here is an extract from it:

“Well, now I have had time to get back from London and digest all that I have learnt at the Social Media Action Team meetings, I am ready to report back!

I found these meetings extremely useful, not only to meet people in other Big Local areas who are at different stages with their projects, but this also really opened my eyes to the world of ‘Social Media’!

I used to be a keen user of Facebook, but now I am a twitter user and a blogger! Attending these meetings have really given me the confidence to crack on and get involved more with the project and utilise social media within the Warwick Ahead project.

I have plans to expand this site and get more people involved, so again, watch this space!

Another thing that I grasped was that everyone should be involved and be encouraged to get involved, social media is now a huge part of everyday life, every generation should be involved, there’s a whole new world out there waiting to be explored! With a little time, help and patience, we as a community can work together to explore this!”

Andy is keen other residents and people connected to Warwick Estate contribute to the blog.

Training at Northern College

Recently residents from Warwick Ahead attended an introductory day at Northern College to help plan out how the college can help support Big local Areas. Gail Merrifield of Warwick Community Group reported...

“Northern College is a great place to learn. It’s a residential college and there are only a few of them in the UK. The experience has to be tasted to be believed. This college offers Adult education and wants the residents of this estate to get involved with learning. The college is a wow place to learn and has an extensive library to cater for all your learning needs. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! Everybody can achieve, you will be amazed.”

Warwick Ahead is working with Northern College to run a series of courses aimed at training residents up to deal with running a £1m project . Your transport and childcare can be paid for. Courses and dates:

Young People Speaking Out

The Young Lives Consortium is working with the council and other partners to develop new ideas of delivering the Youth Service. The Addy was approached to engage a group of our young people in this process. The group were asked to mix with other local youth groups and discuss what is currently available for them in their areas and say what they feel is needed. This was a great opportunity for our young people to discuss their needs and hopefully this will feed back to the people that can make things change for them. They thoroughly enjoyed working with other youths from different backgrounds from themselves. Well done to all who took part!

The Warwick Ahead Community Board would like to wish Wendy Lee good wishes after being ill. We are hopeful Helping Hands will return soon.
