K-2 Assembly Item - KP Last Friday KP performed their class assembly item at the K-2 assembly. The students presented a very entertaining skit exploring what school is all about. The students’ responses were insightful as well as delightful; they obviously enjoy their time learning and playing in class. The children also performed a dance to the Hokey Pokey which was fantastic. Congratulations KP on a brilliant assembly item. Thank you to Mrs Ross and Mrs Kingston-Smith for preparing the children so beautifully for their item.

Jump Rope for Heart (JRFH) ‘Jump Off’ Last Friday PPS hosted its Jump Rope for Heart ‘Jump-Off’ in support of the Heart Foundation. The jump-off began with an exhibition from our ‘Pymble Power Pumpers’, who performed for the whole school. Our Pymble Power Pumpers demonstrated wonderful skipping routines and showed amazing skipping skills, individually and collectively as a team. Our skipping team was extremely impressive and the children enjoyed performing. After the exhibition all students K-6 participated in our jump-off. Children enjoyed skipping with their friends and teachers on a lovely, warm, sunny, Spring morning. The

Jump-Off was a huge success. Our school community has raised $14,197.16 to date for the Heart Foundation. This is a wonderful effort and I’d like to thank you all for your generosity. Thank you also to Miss Baker for coordinating our Jump-Off and training our Pymble Power Pumpers.

Paper Planes Challenge On Saturday our school paper planes finalists competed at the NSW Paper Planes Competition at Sydney University. The 20 PPS students who attended competed well and with good spirit. The children had a wonderful time and represented our school with pride. The results of the competition are listed in this edition of the Myalla. I would like to congratulate all the students who participated in this event. I'd like to thank Mrs Lee-Joe for coordinating this competition and opportunity for our students. Changes to the NSW Department of Education Enrolment Policy There have been some changes to our Department’s school enrolment policy, which will take effect from the beginning of Term 4 this year. Attached is the Department’s information for parents regarding the new enrolment policy as well as the 100-point residential address check sheet. Of particular relevance for Pymble Public School is the enrolment cap set by the Department for all schools. The enrolment cap is the number of students that can be enrolled at a school based on the school’s permanent accommodation. The enrolment cap tells us whether the school may or may not have the capacity to accept non-local enrolments. It is not a target or limit on the number of local enrolments a school can take. Parents planning to enrol their child at a school that is near or at its buffer or cap will be asked to complete the 100-point residential address check to confirm they live within the school’s designated intake area. This means parents will need to provide documents to verify the child’s current address. Please note, this requirement applies to Pymble Public School as our school has exceeded its enrolment cap. Kindergarten Parent Information Evening – 6pm Wednesday 11 September There will be a kindergarten parent information evening tonight for parents interested in enrolling their child at PPS in Kindergarten in 2020. This session will include valuable information regarding our Kindergarten programs, activities and general school routines for starting Kindergarten at our school. There will also be an opportunity for parents to ask questions. This session will be held this evening at 6pm in the upper kindergarten classrooms. P&C Meeting – 7pm Wednesday 11 September A reminder that P&C are holding a regular meeting tonight at 7pm in the school’s staffroom. All parents are welcome to attend this meeting and be part of the association. Road Safety

School Kiss and Ride Zones

A ‘Kiss and Ride Zone’ or ‘Drop-off and Pick-up’ area utilises existing 'No Parking' zones around schools. In these areas, drivers may stop to drop off or pick up children, however No Parking rules apply:

Maximum stop time is 2 minutes

Driver must remain in or within 3 metres of the vehicle

Vehicle must not be left unattended

Additional safety tips for school zones:

Always drop-off or pick-up your child from the designated area, following the school’s procedures

Make sure children use the footpath/passenger side door when getting in and out of a car

Make sure the hand brake is applied when the vehicle is stationary

Never double park

Never park across a pedestrian crossing

Never undertake a U-turn in close proximity to the school.

Safety Tips for Students

Stay buckled up until the vehicle has stopped in the ‘Drop-off and Pick-up’ area

Make sure your school bag and other items are in the car and NOT in the boot

Be ready to get out of the car with your belongings when the car has stopped and you have unbuckled your seatbelt

Always get in and out of the backseat of the vehicle through the safety door - the rear footpath/passenger side door.

Choose Safety Over Convenience

The parking and traffic rules around our schools are there to protect your children. If you break the rules you may be fined. Below is a quick guide to some of the most commonly misunderstood traffic rules.

Double Parking

You must not stop on the road adjacent to another vehicle at any time even to drop off or pick up passengers. Please note, this includes being stopped on the road adjacent to another car (double parked) in car line. Why is it there? Double parking forces other cars to go around you causing traffic congestion and reduces the view of drivers and children crossing the road. Penalty $330 + Demerit points

Deputy Principal’s News

Last week, students in Stage 2 visited Kamay National Park to complement their History Unit on First Contacts. The

day was split into three parts, engaging students in activities related to European settlement and Aboriginal culture.

During a bush walk through the National Park, students explored bush medicines, bush food, made ochre paint and

soap from wattle leaves. In the Museum, they viewed a replica of the ‘Endeavour’, paintings of Captain Cook, maps

tracking his journey and aboriginal artefacts. Students also saw where the Endeavour sailed into Botany Bay, where

it anchored and the place where the British took their first steps on Australian soil. Our teachers reported that all of

our students displayed exemplary behaviour and thoroughly enjoyed the day .

Library News

This term we have some changes with lessons and borrowing due to the repainting program throughout the school. The library has been scheduled to be painted during Week 10 and continuing into the holidays. This means that the library will be closed with lessons to be held in classrooms during week 10. There will therefore be NO BORROWING or RETURNING during week 10. Could you please ensure that your children remember to bring their library bags during week 9, for their lesson, but also later in the week as it will be a long stretch without new books from the library? All returns and borrowing for the holidays should occur during week 9. If you haven’t yet joined a local council library: Ku-ring-gai, Hornsby or Chatswood, this would be a great opportunity. Membership is free and there are many resources, both physical and electronic available to the children, and to you as parents. They also have interesting regular and holiday activities for children and families.

Athletics Carnival

On Wednesday 21 August, the Ku-Ring-Gai Zone Athletics Carnival was held. Our Pymble Public representatives did our school proud. They tried their best and participated with fairness. Overall, Pymble did very well at the carnival with many students placing in the top 4 or 5 over a variety of track and field events. Congratulations to all of the PPS students. The children in bold will represent the Ku-Ring-Gai Zone at the Sydney North Area Athletics Carnival. This takes place in Term 4, Week 1 - Wednesday 16 October 2019 and is held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Track.
