Weekly News 12 th July 2015 www.stpetersharrogate.org.uk St Peter’s Church, Cambridge Road, Harrogate, HG1 1RW Change Friend or Foe? A few people thrive on change but most of us find it a bit demanding at times. The fact is we have three major changes to work through over next few months: coming to terms with life without Tony and Ann after so many years, learning to grow and develop as a Christian community during a time of transition without a vicar and then facing up to working with a new man or woman at the helm in the not too distant future. Change is part and parcel of the world today and it’s certainly at the heart of the Christian life because, although God is unchangeable in his nature, he is always on the move. Of course we’ve had some recent practi ce in dealing with change at St Peter’s, namely the building development project. Camping out at Wesley Chapel for many months was a valuable period of learning together outside our normal comfort zone. During this time of transition many people are taking on new roles and responsibilities. Broadly speaking the Parochial Church Council has overall responsibility for "promoting in the parish the whole mission of the Church”. That’s the official description of the task of all PCCs so no real change there. The two church wardens head up the management of church affairs and I, as your interim minister, take a lead in the ministry of the church. In practice a great number of people are involved in all these aspects of our activity. It’s great to have such a gifted team of people to call upon to serve our community and enrich our life together. I trust and believe that by this time next year, we’ll look back and echo the words of St. Paul “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8; 28 TNIV) Here’s a prayer for us to use as we look to the future: God of mission, who alone brings growth to your church, send your Holy Spirit to give vision to our planning, wisdom to our actions and power to our witness. Help our church to grow in numbers, in spiritual commitment to you and in service to our local community. May all who come through the doors of our church building sense something of your love. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Tim Hurren (Interim Minister)

Change – Friend or Foe? A few people thrive on change but most of us find it a bit demanding at times. The fact is we have three major changes to work through over next few months: coming to terms with life without Tony and Ann after so many years, learning to grow and develop as a Christian community during a time of transition without a vicar and then facing up to working with a new

man or woman at the helm in the not too distant future. Change is part and parcel of the world today and it’s certainly at the heart of the Christian life because, although God is unchangeable in his nature, he is always on the move. Transition Prayers During our time of transition between vicars I would like to encourage each of us all to take up Jesus’ command to pray. In Luke 18 v 1 it says, “Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.” As a church family we have many people and things to offer to God in prayer, as we need guidance and strength to keep the ‘show on the road’!! Therefore I would like to offer a suggested prayer to you all each week in the notice sheet, and you might like to use this in your daily prayers:

Loving Father, we pray for Sian and Oliver - be their constant companion leading and guiding them in their many duties this week and in the months ahead. May You bless them in their work, and give them strength and resilience, as their hearts and minds are focussed on You; and may they shine as Your glorious light, in Your church. Amen

Our First Flower Festival St Peter’s Flower Festival opened on Tuesday, 7th July with over 30 entries filling the Church with scent and colour. A special thanks to Sue Heapy and Helen Stalker for all their hard work and enthusiasm. Today is the last days of voting, so pick up a form, make your £1 donation and choose your
