I’m writing from Kansas City where I’m visiting our granddaughter, Elina, and her mom and dad, Kirstin and Thane. It is a welcome respite from two long days of driving from Southern California and 1550 miles worth of time with our 3-year-old Westie, Winston. I enjoy travel and adventure. I appreciate being in interesting places, exploring new areas and meeting new friends. There is something about exploring new sites, new ideas and new understandings, that brings renewal and vitality. Travel and adventure, however, do require preparation. The Toughest Job I Ever Loved This month I said a final farewell to someone I have admired for a long time It was amazing to hear Pastor Anita speak Pastor Andrewrsquos final message to us Thank you one last time for an amazing man What stood out from his memorial service was this-his life of service And it really got me thinking about my own life of service I have the pleasure of serving young children and their families as an early childhood educator Currently I teach for Childrenrsquos Home Society and Family Services at AGAPE High School an alternative St Paul public school for teen mothers Remember that saying ldquothe toughest job yoursquoll ever loverdquo That pretty much sums up my experience with these young ladies and their children I am constantly amazed What a blessing it has been to be in ministry with these families colleagues and Childrenrsquos Home Society It has brought me complete job satisfaction So now my job is ending My colleagues and I talk about how once you have taught in an environment such as AGAPE it is very hard to transition to a more ldquotraditionalrdquo early childhood education setting A life of service will not make me rich by earthly standards I suppose but I feel abundantly blessed to nurture those a little farther back than the rest yet just as lovely and with as much potential I guess I have always loved the underdog There is so much beauty there

My twins were three weeks old and Steve and I were finally adjusting ndash as much as could be expected ndash to the rhythm of this new life we had with two little babies and a 3-yr old Then I got a call from by brother in Nebraska saying my dad died suddenly from a heart attack He was only 64 I was only 30 I was sad and angry and confused How do I nurse my babies and fly across the country to attend a funeral How do I de-light in this gift of new life and at the same time grieve the death of my father How do I ldquodo deathrdquo and ldquodo liferdquo at the same time It was a challenge The babies affected my ability to grieve and the grieving affected my ability to mother I did the best I could ndash with the help of God and Steve and family and friends And it was fine Not perfect ndash but fine

Life is like that sometimes Our joys and our sorrows happen right next to each other and we find ourselves counting our blessings and facing our chal-lenges at the same time In your families you probably have similar stories one member of the family announces a pregnancy another member announces a cancer diagnosis one child gets engaged the other child gets divorced one dear friend finds a job another dear friend loses a job

Joy and Grief Hope and Fear Stability and Change Loss and Gain They are always weaving in and out of each other And the Spirit of God attends us through it all

With Pastor Andrewrsquos death we may find ourselves with a similar mixture of emotions How do we express our gratitude and our grief How do we look to the past and honor Andrewrsquos legacy here at Prince of Peace and also look to the future and walk into it with new energy and ideas How shall we joyfully welcome our new Interim Pastor and our new organist this month

Many of us know personal grief from the loss of a loved one ndash a parent or grandparent a child or spouse or dear friend It is painful and we each go through it in our own ways Now we are experiencing together something called corporate grief ndash when a congregation as a whole grieves the loss of a significant person in their congregational life together ndash like a pastor On the one hand we have been grieving the loss of Andrew as an active pastor among us since his surgery in June of 2009 On the other hand his death brings a new and final wave of grief ndash with many layers to it Plus Prince of Peace has had experience with this once before Pastor Bragstad the founding pastor died suddenly in 1975 after 18 years of ministry here Whether you were here in 1975 or not it is part of our shared history as a congregation

Good grieving is important for us right now We feel this loss individually and corporately Different people will feel the loss and express the loss in different ways and we must respect those differences New grief sometimes stirs up old grief giving one the (unlooked for) opportunity to revisit and rework some of the old grief You have permission to grieve ndash with all honesty And you have

August 2010

August should be an exciting month at Prince of Peace Pastor Gordon Peterson is starting his interim position Sunday August 1 and Kenny Vigne is starting his organist position August 22 Irsquom eagerly awaiting their arrivals and Irsquom looking forward to working with both of them Irsquom still in the process of finding musicians for the summer but we have the service style scheduled so herersquos the August schedule August 1 ndash Traditional August 8 ndash Band Led ndash Music Worship Team (Now and Then Quartet of Deb Caryn Roger and Jim) August 15 ndash Traditional ndash Leah VandenBosch August 22 ndash Traditional August 29 ndash Traditional Sept 4 ndash Outdoor service at 1000 South Side Aces Call Milt to volunteer for special music

As excited as I am to have Kenny starting it is also sad because Cheryl wonrsquot be our keyboardist on a

regular basis (Shersquos still our 1st call for a substitute) Cheryl is great to work with and knows how to lead our congregation very well This is the 2nd time wersquove been fortunate enough to have her as a long term substitute I hope everyone takes the time to expresses their gratitude to her before shersquos done

I believe the first verse of hymn 576 ldquoWe All Are One in Missionrdquo states our time of transition well ldquoWe all are one in mission we all are one in call our varied gifts united by Christ the Lord of all A single great commission compels us from above to plan and work together that all may know Christrsquos loverdquo What a church we will be when we take our vast differences and talents and unite them in the call of spreading the love of Christ

May God bless us all Milty

Kenny Vigne grew up in St Paul Minnesota the land of Lakes and Lutherans where he dreamed about being a concert pianist or a chemist He first became interested in playing the organ as a Freshman at St Olaf College and successfully auditioned into the Bachelor of Music degree program in organ after having played the instrument for three months For the next three years he studied with Dr Catherine Rodland with some coaching from Dr John Ferguson and graduated with a Sacred Music degree in organ performance Deciding that he was still too inexperi-enced with the instrument to professionally serve a church to his fullest capacity he went to the

University of Oklahoma to study improvisation with Dr John Schwandt where he received his Masters Degree in Organ Performance in May 2010 Although he has performed several recitals and played as a soloist with the St Olaf Orchestra he feels called to be a church musician rather than a performer In his free time Kenny enjoys dancing improvising reading Bill Bryson learning how to play the bongos and pennywhistle and composing silly pieces such as a prelude and fugue on the theme of Winnie the Pooh He currently lives in the Twin Cities with his wife Emily who is pursuing a Masters of Musicology degree from the University of Minnesota

Once again Chancel Choir offers you a wonderful music experience as well as a service opportunity at Prince of Peace Adult singers (confirmed and up) in all sections are invited to join and make a joyful noise to the Lord If you have participated in Chancel Choir in the past we hope you will consider sharing your time and talents again in the group If Chancel Choir is new to you we think you will find the experience provides fellowship and fun as well as a chance to help lead worship while learning music of depth and quality And ~ the Chancel Choir schedule includes one Sunday off a month which may be helpful as you plan your own personal or family schedules Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 730 to 9 pm beginning on September 8 Please consider making a commitment to Chancel Choir in 2010-2011 If you would like more information contact Kathy Tunseth through the church office

Audrey Fairchild-Ehm - Youth Minister

The last few weeks have been difficult weeks Andrewrsquos passing has given his departure from our midst a harsh

reality Andrew had a love of the BWCA A dream I gave up years ago was taking a trip to the boundary waters My knees would never survive a portage even if I could somehow manage to get into a canoe How would I get out

But leave it to Andrew he managed to get me into the area of the BWCA The first summer that Andrew and I were at Prince of Peace Andrew arranged for us to do a Sr High Trip to Gus and Anne Hauganrsquos cabin We did some work for Anne and Gus and he and Patti took the youth on in to the BWCA while John Jason and I stayed at Gus and Annersquos I had heard others describe the BWCA as ldquoGodrsquos Countryrdquo As I sat and lsquotookrsquo in the view I had no doubt that only God could have painted these pictures

These same sights and sounds are some of the reasons I love spending time at our cabin Andrew offered young people the opportunity to experience the BWCA and whereas I am not able to offer that I do have a cabin that I believe gives one an opportunity to step out of our regular lsquocityrsquo view and experience a different perspective of Godrsquos creation

Andrew and I would often share stories of our cabin projects and how great the lsquocabinrsquo experience is even if it is not the BWCA Andrew had a yearning to introduce young people to lsquoGodrsquos Countryrsquo

He used the BWCA to teach survival skills to develop self-dependence to increase our understanding of God and each other and to build community

This weekend I will be taking the Jr High youth up to our cabin to a piece of lsquoGodrsquos Countryrsquo We will spend three days sharing our lives learning new skills teaching each other who we are and becoming Godrsquos community In August the Sr High Youth will have a long weekend in lsquoGodrsquos Countryrsquo The Jr High Youth will have another opportunity to spend four days of confirmation camp in lsquoGodrsquos Countryrsquo

I find our cabin a special placemdasha place where I experience God differently than at home in the midst of daily life I am grateful that I can offer this place to others so that they might be able to experience God in a new or different way Summer gives us the opportunity to have more intense experiences at places outside our normal lives If you have a cabin enjoy If you do not have a cabin find a place that can become your lsquoGodrsquos Countryrsquo to implement the 3-RrsquosmdashRelax Relate and Re-create Sr High Youth Mission Trip (those entering 9th grade through graduation) We will travel to Buchanan County Iowa (Hazelton) for clean-up demolition and rebuilding from the tornado which hit on May 28 2008 We will serve through Lutheran Disaster Relief Wed July 28mdashSun August 1 Cost $10000 per person

Message from Pastor Gordon Peterson (continued from page 1)

Erik Olsonrsquos Ordination at Prince of Peace

As I envisioned my move from Southern California to Minnesota I began by thinking about what I needed to pack for the journey It is important to have the resources needed to make the trip It was also important to map the route Having a good map gives permission to take a side-trip without fear of getting lost in the process of exploration Winston and I had a nice walk alongside a mountain lake when I left the main road

Any traveler knows most excursions require the ability to make adjustments along the way One should expect the unexpected There could be a detour or a delay that requires patience A traveler may even discover that the unexpected delay or detour requires stopping to ask someone for directions or advice

What both the well-traveled and weary traveler understand about a journey is the importance of main-taining a sense of humor while discovering oppor-tunities to celebrate along the way and to give God thanks when you reach your destination

As I make my road trip to Minnesota and Prince of Peace Irsquom looking forward to traveling with Pastor Anita the staff the leadership and with you I look forward to sharing a ministry of transition and mission packing mapping journeying and reaching the destination of Godrsquos pre-ferred future for Prince of Peace Lutheran Church See you in August

Erik invites you to worship with him at his Service of Ordination Bishop David Zellmer for the South Dakota Synod Presiding Rev Dr Stan Olson Executive Director of Vocation and Education Preaching

Tanzania 2010 trip - June 22mdashJuly 3 The Tanzania Travelers recently returned from a visit to our companion congregation in Bomalangrsquoombe Tanzania The travelers included Lee and Sandi Poppe Jim and Caryn Josephson Lorna Breiter Judy Carney and three of our youth Erin Miller Maddie Weiler and Phil Dyauli

This was a wonderful opportunity for us to strengthen the relation-ship with our brothers and sisters in Tanzania During the 4 days and nights we spent in Bomalangrsquoombe we saw many wonderful im-provements The gifts we brought were very much appreciated and we received a number of special hand-made gifts in return

The photos include the travelers by our bus before our ride from Dar es Salaam to Iringa our youth with 18 of the 20 students we are

sponsoring and an example of Godrsquos magnificent creation at Ruaha

You can check the Prince of Peace web site for a lsquoblogrsquo (web diary) of the trip including a final photo album at httpblogsprinceofpeacetctanzania and watch for additional opportunities to learn more

The Cross has arrived

Wow This is what everyone has said after seeing the cross set in the sanctuary - a beautifully sculpted piece by artist David Broussard

This Texan artisan relates his work to a jewelers artistic craftsmanship What he does with steel is what a jeweler does with stones The metal is polished and textured for a unique design The beautiful colors are achieved using only the heat from a blow torch a process that Broussard calls flame-painting When the right amount of pressure and heat are applied the beauty in the metal is revealed When displayed with the proper lighting these crosses can be enjoyed for years to come

Sympathy Extended to Rogness family on the death of Pastor Andrew Rogness

United in Marriage Stephen Rogness and Sarah Greenfield on July 10 Amanda Neujahr and Rob Osterman on June 26

Transferred Brian Kimberly Callie and Nicholas Bernards to Faith-Lilac Way Lutheran church in Robbinsdale

New Organist Kenneth Vigne

Milt Warkentien - Music Coordinator

Sr High Youth (continued) Cabin Weekend (those entering 9th grade through graduation) Join us at the Fairchild-Ehm Cabin near Melrose MN We will fish canoe kayak wake surf kneeboard ski tube and even play a game or two and watch a movie Thurs Aug 12mdashSun Aug 15 Cost $6000 per person Dead Sea Scrolls Tues August 10 We will meet at church at 345 PM Cost is $3400 per person less if we get a group of 15 people then $2800 per person We will return to church about 930 PM Any parentsadults wanting to attend and able to help with transportation please call Audrey BBQ Games Calendar Planning Sunday September 12 600 PM we will gather for dinner play some games and plan our calendar of events for the fall Please sign up on the youth bulletin board so we know how much food and game supplies wersquoll need Jr High Youth Confirmation Camp (those entering 7th amp 8th grades) Join us at the Fairchild-Ehm Cabin near Melrose MN We will build community come to understand our individual strengths and build trust in our group We will fish canoe kayak wake surf kneeboard ski tube and even play a game or two and watch a movie Thursday Aug 5mdashSun Aug 8 Cost $6000 per person

Sympathy Extended to Rogness family on the death of Pastor Andrew Rogness

United in Marriage Stephen Rogness and Sarah Greenfield on July 10 Amanda Neujahr and Rob Osterman on June 26
