"He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they
refused to come." Why? What made the king's invitation so distasteful to these
guests? According to the parable, either the guests were too busy with their farms
and their businesses, or else they were downright hostile to the entire idea: they
"laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them." What could possibly
explain this resistance? Perhaps we have a clue in the puzzling conclusion of to-
day's Gospel. One of the second-string guests pulled in from the streets came to
the feast "not dressed in a wedding garment." The man knew he was guilty, hence
his silence. And the king's punishment suggests that the fellow ought to have
known better. This "wedding garment" calls to mind the preparation of our souls
necessary to join in the great "wedding feast of the Lamb" (Rv 19:9), that is, heav-
en. This man was apparently just too lazy to get ready. He presumed that having
received an invitation to the banquet was enough, that nothing was required of
him. Not so. He should have demonstrated his gratitude by dressing appropriately.
And what of the !irst-string guests? Some were too busy to bother coming; others
were furious that they had been invited at all. Now, where do we !it in? Are we
more concerned with worldly work than with spiritual growth? Are we offended
by the very suggestion that we might need to "dress up" our souls? Or are we the
disinterested Christian, willing to feast but too lazy to foster his faith? Jesus gave
his life to open the gates of heaven for us. Let's show our gratitude by preparing
radiant, beautiful souls worthy of the heavenly wedding feast.

With our recent in!lux of new clients, the food pantry has seen an increased need for personal care items. These items cannot be purchased using food stamps. In an effort to promote good hygiene we have attempted to help !ill that gap while still providing their necessary food needs. In addition to some food items, we are asking you to consider donating some of the following items for our clients in the month of October: Shampoo, soap, toothpaste, tooth brushes (adult and child sizes), denture care items, deodorant, disposable razors, shaving cream, tissues and feminine care products. Many of the items on this list can be purchased for one dollar at the Dollar Tree store. Won't you please consider adding an item or two to your food donations? Our clients are very appreciative for the support they receive from our pantry and continually express their gratitude.
Our food needs for October consist of the following: Cereal (especially Raisin Bran, Cheerios, Crispy Rice), Oatmeal packets, broth, beef soup, clam chowder soup, other hearty soups, hamburger helper, stove top stuf!ing, boxed potatoes, ice and pasta side dishes, crackers, brownie mix and frosting. Any item such as cooking oil, !lour, sugar, mayonnaise, salad dressings, spices, etc., that will aid in food preparation or enhance a meal are appreciated any time of the year.

Trunk or Treat is a Halloween event where people gather and park their cars in the parking lot, open their trunks, decorate them and pass out candy from their trunks. This event provides a safe family environment for trick or treaters. New this year, prizes for the best decorated car, the scariest car and the best treat! So put on your coolest costume and invite your friends to come trunk or treating! We are in need of trunks, so grab some candy, decorate your car and come join us for this fun event!!

If the weather does not cooperate we will be trick or treating in the gym (Sorry no trunks in the gym, we will be using the tables.)

Vestal residents must sign up no later than October 20, 2017 at Mother Teresa's Cup-board at 202 Gar!ield Avenue in Endicott. The hours for
sign-ups are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 to 2:30. Picture IDs and a piece of mail dated within the last 30 days are required for all adults 18 years of age and older. Id is required for children but it does not need to be picture ID. Apalachin residents must sign up no later than October 20th at the OLS Food Pantry during normal operating hours.

In order to offer gift cards this holiday season we are asking for parish support in donating gift cards for Walmart, Target, Boscov’s and Oakdale Mall to help us meet the need. We would like to offer cards in $25-$40 amounts. Cards in $5.00 increments work best. Gift card donations may be given to your parish (we will gladly pick up) or you may drop off gift card donations to Catholic Charities at 86 Walnut Street or 232 Main Street in Binghamton. We have begun accepting gift cards so we can start handing them out December 1st.

We’ll hear from 6 favorite saints, learn how we are all called to be holy, and "ind out how Jesus can show us the way to Heaven. Our "irst retreat will begin with a parents meeting and a meet and greet setting for our young friends. We will be dis-cussing the "low of retreats, dates and helpers that are need-ed. If you have a child who has completed their "irst year of faith formation and is attending their
second year, you should have completed the registration form for First Sacraments (blue form located in the rack near the Youth Bulletin boards). Our next Jesus on Your Playlist is scheduled for October 23. We will be preparing a treat for our Trunk or Treat visitors as part of our service project. As usual, our scripture, music and snack will be part of the process also. Need not be catholic to attend, ask your child if they know someone who would like to come hang out with them and Jesus.
