A Little Bit About Me:-I am married and have three beautiful, young children-I taught third grade last year-I have a solid belief that any child can achieve great things when they believe in themselves-I pride myself on always putting forth my best effort and having a passion for what I do-My favorite quote is by Henry Ford, he said, “…whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you are right…”-My personal goal this year is to continue to learn from the students I teach, the colleagues I work with and from the parents of my students

Discuss personal stories and Daycare monitor…

“Honorable Character” Program and Recording Sheet This year at FV,

administration and staff would like to focus on the positive behaviors we see from your child. You will find a copy of the “Honorable Character” sheet in your child’s planner- I will mark in this weekly. Each positive behavior that your child demonstrates while in school will be publically recognized and documented by your child on our classroom chart daily.

Planners…. Please make sure that

you have paid $4 for a student planner- these are required for the school year and I have already personally purchased a planner for those students that have not brought me the money yet.

Show parents planner and discuss the contents and importance of signing off on the conduct and necessary sheets on a daily or weekly basis

Page 9: Welcome to 2 nd grade curriculum night!

Scholastic News magazine…. I have already purchased a

class set- one weekly magazine for every child. Because it will be taught as part of our curriculum and because your child will learn so much from this awesome magazine- it is necessary that every child has a weekly copy in order to participate/read along with the other kids. They are $4 and I will be more than happy to accept your donations…thanks to all the parents that have already donated!!!

General Homework Policy My belief…. (verbal discussion) The two things your child is required to do: Reading

and Math (no spelling, geography, etc.) If you intend to complete your child’s homework for

them…let me know so I can add your name to my grade book ;)

HA HA*Another words, please do not do your child’s

homework for them…you may help them, but refrain from doing it solo Remember: meaningful work builds character and helps develop necessary skills

Page 11: Welcome to 2 nd grade curriculum night!

Homework policy:Reading

Every night your child is REQUIRED to read at least 15 minutes independently.

Your child will receive two homework grades for reading per week.

The total amount of minutes that your child is required to read Monday thru Sunday will be 100 minutes- I will check for signatures, book titles and minutes read in their reading log every Monday morning. YOUR CHILD MUST HAVE YOUR SIGNATURE TO GET THE PROPER CREDIT/GRADE.

This gives you flexibility in case you have soccer practice, family events, etc.

My suggestions…. ????????????????????

Homework: Math

Occasionally, you will see a math WS come home for your child to complete by the next school day; your child should not spend more than 10-15 minutes on this WS…if they do, that might mean that they were not paying attention in class during Math time. The worksheet should be a review and practice of the skills previously taught (no surprises!)

Your child will have a math facts test every Friday- these facts are to be studied at home. You may want to share your personal memorization techniques with your child to help them. Some ways your child can study are: create math facts flash cards using index cards, write the math fact families in triangle format (your child will learn this technique at school), or to go over them verbally with a sibling, friend or parent. 5-10 minutes a night should be sufficient depending on how well/quickly your child can “memorize” quick information.

Science: Biomes, matter and energy, properties, force and motion, life/environmental cycles

Social Studies: communities and citizenship, influential people and government

Page 14: Welcome to 2 nd grade curriculum night!
