Who are we?- formerly known as Jean Vanier CHS, our school opened in 1985 with

Mr. Jim Fox as founding principal- currently have 500 students and

over 50 staff- Our Lady of the Bay makes reference

to our mother Mary and pays homage to the beautiful area in which we live.

CELEBRATING OUR FAITH- our faith is very important to us and is integrated

into all that we do- students participate in retreats and volunteer in

the school, community and the world- students take one religion course per year

Your Child’s Transition to High School December/January● Guidance staff visits SMCDSB feeder schools

February● will visit feeder schools for course selection and entry● Non-feeder are entered by Guidance staff ● Registration forms are to be submitted to Student Services by

March 1, 2021● All registrations received before FEBRUARY 10th will be entered into a draw for New OLB Uniform Hoodie!!!

WHAT YOU NEED TO GRADUATE???

STUDENTS NEED:-30 credits (18 compulsory, 12 elective)-40 hours of community service-to pass Literacy test or course

ACADEMICS- we strive to create an atmosphere for learning and growth- the curriculum is designed to challenge

students to their potential in a community in which Christian values are the foundation for the individual’s growth.

- our curriculum is presented to meet academic and career needs.

- we encourage students to embrace their- God-given talents and become lifelong

learners

COURSES IN GRADE 9English - Academic/Applied/Locally Developed Math - will be de-streamed in September 2021Science - Academic/Applied/Locally Developed Geography - Academic/Applied French - Academic/Applied Religion - Open Phys. Ed. - Open Elective - Open (Every effort is made to give students their

first choice)

PATHWAYS - ACADEMIC VS APPLIED- Cover the same essential concepts while responding to students’

different learning styles - Academic course codes have a “D” in them.

Eg. ENG1DTranslation-->Grade 9, Academic English

- Applied course codes have a “P” in them.Eg. ENG1PTranslation→ Grade 9, Applied English

- Math will be de-streamed in September

- everyone will be in the same class

THE LOCALLY DEVELOPED PROGRAM - Courses are offered in Math, Science, Geography and English.

- course codes end in an “L” (ENG1L, MAT1L, CGC1PL or SNC1L)

- Designed for students who may not be working at grade level.

- Should be chosen only in consultation with the students Grade 8 teacher and often input from the Guidance Department.

- For more information regarding the locally developed courses see Guidance, Special Education or Student Success teachers.

NOT INTO SPORTS? NO PROBLEM!- Student Leadership - plans events for students throughout the

school year. This group organized our first ever lip dub!- Mountain Biking Club - Best Buddies- Link Crew - mentorship club for Grade 9 students- Fitness Club- Robotics Club- participate in the Waterloo Math Contest- and much more!

SUPPORT FOR EVERY STUDENT- we have weekly access to a wide range of counselling services

for students in need 1) Social Worker2) Addictions Counsellor3) Mental Health Nurse4) Youth Outreach worker5) Registered Nurse

- Students can access this service through the Guidance office

HOW DO I REGISTER?- Course selections are due on MARCH 1st, 2021.

FEEDER SCHOOLS

- registration packages will either be mailed or dropped off at St. Mary’s and St. Noel the week of January 25

NON-FEEDER STUDENTS

- you will complete our online registration and then submit your supplementary documents
