Central DistrictsCombined XmasHopWell I thought it was time I put pen to paperand give my rst report in our newsletterafter coming to Rock n Roll for many years.I got a ride to Longburn with Sue & Philin their van, along with Jacky & Kelvin andChristine & John. We left Wangas at 6.30pmand stopped in Bulls for kebabs takeaways which proved to be not a good choice (lucky for meI had eaten at home!) Poor Christine had burnt pitta bread, Jacky asked for chicken and gotlamb instead, and Phil nished off Sues vegetarian one as she was not enjoying it, so all in all

everyone was wishing they had ordered sh n chipsnext door!We arrived at the hall at 8pm with the party in fullswing, with Flash Back playing - a good night hadby all and nice supper too. Sue was lucky enough towin the $100 rafe which Christine kindly drew outher number.Being without a partner I thought I might be sit-ting out quite a bit, but no I had plenty of dancesso thanks guys and girls for dancing with me, and,

of course, I am not backward in asking people up sothanks everyone for great dancing. We left for home @ 12midnight having a smoothtrip with Phil at the wheel (very safe driver) thanks a lot. thank you Patricia Baudet

Demo ReportBasin Reserve/Keith St House Demo -Dec 4 2010 (I think)

Due to morning rain, the Demo originally earmarked for the IHC bbq at Basin Reservewas moved to Keith St House. Even though both Scott and I had arrived outside the housefairly early, it very quickly became apparent we might well be the only ones coming at all.

Neither of us really wanted to demo on our own. Just as it crossed our minds that maybewe could slink off elsewhere, we were noticed by Stu. The Demo was now on regardless ofnumbers.

Steve met us out front, complete with apron and tongs, and since everything was notquite ready we had another 10 minutes or so to pray somebody else turned up. Just as wedpretty much given up hope, along came Barry and Jan. Yay! Close behind them were Hamueraand Celone as non-dancing supporters.

We were ushered around the back to the dance oor an area of grass divided byconcrete paths. Scott & I chose the only patch of grass that wasnt immediately under atree because we had had visions of our Candle lift leaving me hooked on a branch by myfeet! We cleared the area of twigs before trying to sort out the CD player which, for somereason, was refusing to play my demo CD.

A minor kerfufe later, we had an alternative stereo system propped in a doorwayand away we launched into a warm up dance. We followed that with our usual slow and fastroutines, but minus any pull-thru type moves. Scotty had thought the grass would be fairlyeasy for me to slide on, but it proved not to be in the slightest.

After this very short 3-song demo we were invited to share in the bbq, which wegratefully accepted. It started to rain again while we were eating so we were very lucky wemanaged to squeeze the demo in at all.

Thank you Barry and Jan for helping us out with the dancing, even though we know youreally, really didnt want be the only other couple there. And thank you to Hamuera andCelone for your support, it is very much appreciated. Also a big thank you goes to the staffand residents of Keith St House.

Note: the venue for this demo was changed very suddenly at the last minute and I foundthere were a number of people I could not contact to let them know about the change. Ifyou would like to do Demos, even occasionally, could you please make sure I have your contactphone numbers.

Majestic Square Demo - Nov 20 2010Alternating sun and heavy clouds meant it was going to be iffy getting this demo in at all

before the heavens opened.Despite this, by the time we were due to go on, there had straggled in quite a number of

members, including some who just happened to be wandering down town. The band we wereto be dancing to was the same ladies we did a demo to at Trafalgar Square a few monthspreviously, so we knew we were in for some long songs and we now had plenty of people togo on and come off the dance area as they pleased and still maintain a respectable presencedancing.

The dance area itself was going to be iffy as well. Mostly brick, some concrete andspots of polished stone inlays. We gured we could do everything we needed to do on it, butI found myself bottling out of doing the Candle with Scotty as that ground just looked sohard.

Around 10 minutes into the demo it started to rain, and in a few seconds our dance oorchanged into an ice rink. Those of us dancing slid our way to a dry apron strip immediately in

front of the stage and carried on. Unfortunately we were severely limited to what we coulddo with the stage mid height beside us and only a meter wide dry strip to stay inside of. Onefoot off this strip meant an immediate slip. So, when the ladies nished the current number,we had to call it day. It was simply too dangerous.

A disappointing end to a demo which, in dry weather, would have had us covering theentire forecourt in Rock n Roll brilliance.

    thankyou Kath

An Update from Tamara - in DenmarkHey guys,Yea I had a good time on my Christmas break Im kind ofsick of Danish now though. I hope you had a good Xmasand New Years!I went home with a girl, Line. I met here at the school.her house is a real cute little cottage I love it so much.It really feels like Christmas when it gets dark so earlyyou can turn all the lights off and have candle light andChristmas music; I like it.

We went to a friends house for Christmas drinks anddinner on the 22nd in a place called Alborg. Its right upnorth. I was a little worried because before we left itwas all over the news that there was going to be a bigsnow storm in Denmark! The warnings said if you wantedto go anywhere in Denmark you had to go on the 22ndbecause on the 23rd (the day we needed to drive home)the whole of Denmark will stop and you wont be able togo anywhere! So it was a bit of a risk going. We might nothave made it back for Christmas with Lines family but wedid. The snow storm hit in the south and we were right upnorth so we were ne!

We had to catch the ferry a few times to the main islandwhen I was staying with Line on the island Fan, it wascrazy. The boat had to push through all the ice coz thesea was frozen. Ive never seen anything like it before!Cool though.

The island is really small so its really cozy and everyoneseems to know each other. I think it would be nearly amarathon to run around the whole island its 16km longand 5km wide. It would be a nice run if you could make itthough!I would like to try and go back there in the summer time

as there are a lot of holiday homes, so Im guessing its agood spot!

I had Christmas dinner with Lines mum on the 23rd. Theyhave so many traditions in Denmark its crazy. We all heldhands around the Christmas tree and sung Danish Christ-mas songs while we danced around the tree - hahacrazy ah. After that they open the presents anddrink coffee and tea and eat Christmas cookies. But on Christmas day its weird that they dont doanything until dinner time, I like it that we cel-ebrate and eat all day! We get to open our presentsin the morning too which is much better than wait-

ing all day! But its snowing!!! This means I canofcially cross another thing off my list! YayI gure since they celebrate Christmas a dayearly you were actually celebrating Christ-mas at the same time because of the timedifference., so it was nice to think aboutwhat everyone was up to back home. They drink this really disgusting drinkover Christmas called 'schnaps' itsreally strong and they just shot it backlol its mostly the older people that likeit lol all the young people are trying toget out of it!

They also drink a lot of cider whichwe dont really drink that often butits ok. Its the girly drink hererather than all the girls drinkingcheep vodka drinks.

I went to visit Sara, the girlI stayed with when I rst got

here. Its super nice to see all her family again kind offeels like a home away from home; they are so nice. I gotthere at lunch time then we ate lots of food and went iceskating together outside in the city centre it was reallynice Im getting a bit better at it now!

I went shopping in Copenhagen as I needed to get someshoes suitable for the snow, and then we went to Tivoli, the amusement park, to walk around and check out all thepretty Christmas lights. It was super pretty with all thesnow. I took some pictures I think they are on Face book!

    Xxxx

My new years was maybe one of the quietest Ive everhad but it was cosy so I guess it was ok, and the re-works were cool as they went on for over an hour and ahalf after new years. I stayed outside for ages watchingthem for a long time, but it got too cold after a while. They celebrate a little different than we do its not allabout getting on the piss with your friends lol. Theyusually sit down and have a formal dinner with family ora group of friends. You stay inside all night and eat anddrink until New Years then you crack a bottle of cham-pagne and eat this weird cake thing went it hits midnight

    - another tradition

I stayed with a girl from school after New Years. Sheand her family are so sweet. They are so keen to cometo NZ they were asking me heaps of questions about itand even asked me to show them and their family somepictures on a projector screen in their living room. I hopethey get to come one day; it was fun showing them aboutNZ!

I brought a Rubiks cube! And I can solve it alreadywithout looking at the instructions. Its fun; I always

    wondered how they work.

The training so far is going good. I think it seems to havestarted better than last semester; more organised andfocused. I have chosen strength training for my optionalsport and knitting as an optional subject. I dont know if

I will get them because we had to rate our choicesfrom 1-5 from all the options so I will nd out onSunday if I get them or not. I also have a spottingclass, (learning how to help the gymnasts whilethey are tumbling etc...). Danish is only twice aweek now.

Everything else is kind of the same really. There are two schedules running side byside this semester because of the amount ofstudents there are. But its good, because itmeans not all the classes are super crowded. There are 240 students here at the schoolthis semester.

Not sure if there has been anything elsegoing on but its still cold and starts gettingdark around 3pm, but the snow lightensthings up a little!

Anyway Love you guys and thinking ofyou!

2011 NZ Masters GamesFriday night and our judges were heading down from Hamilton; took a right (wrong) turn at Raetihi andended up on the Pipiriki-Whanganui river road !!! Over 2 hours later, after negotiating the winding, narrow, never travelled before (and never again) road in the dark, they arrived safely in good old Wanganui.

We had good numbers still this year, slightly down on the 2009 Games but enough for a good

competition nevertheless.Heaps of thanks must go to the following people: Our judges, Jan Morgan, Robert Ropihaand Tyree Connor, with Linda Knight doing the scrutineering ably assisted by our very ownKathy Hylton. Programme arranger June McGrath, who also managed the oor with WhitneySorensen and Jacky Adam assisting. We were very fortunate this year to have Rob Connor(Tyree Connors hubby and our Nationals MC) doing the MC work. Spot on Rob.The Village Marquee was like a sauna again this year, but the atmosphere was amazing; andthe oor, after a bit of a pounding on Friday night, had settled down pretty well, with nocomplaints that I heard of. cont. next page

3 Party Nights down 6 more to go, Bugger wehad to go home . . .WOW Wanganui Rock N Roll Club and Masters Games, what aweekend. Despite our long roundabout journey from Hamilton to Wanganui (due to Road being closed atRaetihi) it was worth it.

We enjoyed the dancing competition (would have like to have some competition in the over 60s section.)Good way to lose weight, dancing in the Sauna Tent, and I certainly will not wear 2 outts in the BestDressed Competition next time. Quick changes in the Unisex Changing room at the side of the stage inthat heat was not pleasant. But Hey, we all survived, and had plenty to laugh about.

After the Rock N Roll Competition we went along to the Ballroom Dancing to support Brent and DelwynMiles and Bob Mazoyer and Wendy Walker competing in the Dance Sport Comp. that was hilarious.Kathy Kent, Delwyn and myself got a bit catty (and very giggly) with our comments on the attitude ofsome of the Ballroom Dancers walking around with their noses in the air. Well thats how it seemed tous, it certainly didnt look fun. We all decided Ballroom was not for us we are all too friendly, we like tosmile and have fun while we are dancing. Also the music for their Rock n Roll event was a bit topsy turvy. The Slow Song was a Medium and their Fast Song was a Slow song and as you all know your fast routine isdependent on momentum which you get with a fast song. Good job Ron and I didnt enter, as the oor waswell powdered. As you all know Ron had enough trouble staying on his feet in the Sauna Tent.

We spent some time on Sunday in the Village watching other sports and had a very pleasant afternoon at

Lake Virginia. (we did the River Cruise and Elevator last time). We really liked what wesaw of Wanganui. Sunday night was brilliant with the Stars in their Eyes Party. Rockon Tina Turner

Well done Wanganui we really didnt want to go home, roll on 2013. We should get ateam together next time and enter the Corporate Quiz; that looked like lots of fun.

thankyou Ron & Jeanette Jones Hamilton.

Around 10.15 we kicked off with the Best Dressed Female, Male and Couple events rst off.Once again a great turnout from competitors with 16 women entered in their event, andQuarters, Semis and a Final having to be held again this year.

Karl (from Norway) was here again to entertain the crowd with his inimitable style. He hasbeen to at least eight Masters Games that I know of, and must enjoy them to go to thathuge expense to come over every 2 years. Karl stays with Gill and Alex for a few weeks in

February and Gill has always partnered him; well done Gill. To all out-of-town competitors- thanks for your entries; we hope (know) you all had a great time. You all put on greatperformances, and its great to meet and compete with you guys. Tell your club membersabout our Masters Games and encourage them to compete in 2013.

    Wednesday 9thPractice Night in the

Masters Games Village . . .Once again we were given the opportunity to give a demo and hold our practice night inthe Village Marquee. We had roughly one hour which we used up no problem. Gilly haddrawn up the programme and emailed it to everyone, so we knew exactly what we were

to do when we got there.Danny supplied a cd of music he wanted for the demos and I supplied the music for therest of the time. The Rock n Roll Gay Gordons got people on the oor before a great

30 minute pressure-cooker lesson with California Blue to nish the session.A quick pack up of all the gear to get the stage clear for the evenings entertainment,

    a n d t h e n . . .My cd collection went walk-a-bout, and it was panic stations for me till Sunday night,

when good old Johnny Williams found it in the djs booth. It must have been found andhanded in by some honest person . . . whew thank god.
