The Writing Sample assesses a student’s ability to write a well-organized and well-developed essay. Correct grammar, spelling, and sentence structure are also important. Accuplacer Reading Comprehension measures one’s ability to find specific information in the text and to make logical inferences that extend beyond the text information. Sentence Skills measures one’s ability to understand appropriate usage of grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, writing strategy, and writing style. Arithmetic measures skills in basic math operations using whole numbers and fractions, decimals and percents, and applications and problem solving. Elementary Algebra measures skills often taught in a first-year high school algebra class including signed numbers and rationals, algebraic expressions, equations, inequalities, and word problems. TIME The placement testing session takes from 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 hours depending on the number of subtests a student needs to take. Please plan accordingly and make sure that you allow sufficient time to stay for the entire ses- sion. The session starts promptly. If you arrive late, you will not be seated and will be asked to come back another time. FORMAT An essay and a computerized exam are administered. The time allotted for the essay is 50 minutes. The computerized subtests are not timed. Students are permitted to take up to 2-1/2 hours to complete the 4 subtests. Computer generated calculators are provided for selected items in the math subtests. Only students with a documented disability are permitted to use a calculator for all math items. All matriculated students Non-matriculated students registering for English, mathematics or other selected classes. Before being admitted to the College, students who have not graduated from high school or earned a GED must take the placement exam. WHO IS WAIVED FROM TAKING THE PLACEMENT EXAM? Transfer Students A student is waived from taking the placement exam if s/he has received a grade of “C” or better in a college-lev- el math or writing course from a regionally accredited college or university.
