Bigleaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum) is the largest and most common maple on Vancouver Island. Festival goers can explore how sap is tapped from these trees and turned into syrup that rivals the flavor of any produced in the Eastern Provinces. There will

also be live entertainment, train rides, tapping demos, syrup tasting, mini-workshops and local syrup to purchase while supplies last.

There is family fun to be had at the BC Forest Discovery Centre Feb 6 and 7 with the return of the Annual ‘Bigleaf Maple Syrup Festival’.

Earlier this fall, the award winning artist once again de camped from his New Brunswick home – this time to record his upcoming album. Produced in New York with Commissioner Gordon (Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse, KRS -One), H onest Manfollows up the JUNO Award nominated Weightless and sees the songwriter pushing himself into new territory. Blessed with a rich gospel soul voice and armed with a new set of songs, Matt Andersen found a perfect partner in crime with Commissioner Gordon.

“Gordon has worked with so many different people, like Santana and Quincy Jones, on so many historic albums,” says Andersen. “He has such a great approach and was able to tie- in so many new ideas to what I’ve done in the past without losing touch with my sound.”

From writing around drum beats to bringing in a cast of players including Andy Bassford (Toots and the Maytals, Burning Spear, Natalie Merchant), Benji Bouton (Ibibio Sound Machine), Josh David Barret (The Wailers, Lauryn Hill), and Lenny Underwood (Mary J. Blige, Amy Winehouse),Honest Man expands on what we already know and love from Andersen and brings it to a new level.

“Gordon brought a drum beat to one of our first sessions that I loved, and I wrote ‘Let’s Get Back’ around

it. When we tracked, we did it the same way as the others myself on acoustic guitar,

Benji on electric, Josh on bass. Using beats is something I never thought I would go for. But it was a lot of fun and I’m really excited with

what we recorded. If I was left up to my own devices it would

have been a very different record.”

The ten songs that make up H onest

the political and the personal. The title track, co- written with Chris Kirby, was inspired by a US political cartoon while “Let’s Get Back”, co- penned with Andy Stochansky, has Andersen thinking about how his country as a nation has changed, but not for the better. “Who Are You Listening To?” was hatched with Ryan Hupman during a pre -election social media flood and emerges as rally call for people to make up their own minds and not be swung by the ‘information’ we’re being fed.

On “All The Way”, written with Gordie Sampson, Andersen takes a more personal approach as he sings about the decision to fully commit to a relationship, while on the alluring piano ballad “I’m Giving In”,

composed with Andy Stochansky and Jamie Hartman, he muses about the moments leading up to that commitment.

“The song ‘I’m Giving In’ was the final one that I needed to lay down vocals for,” recalls

Andersen. “It was my last night in New York and the studio we were using was underneath a ballroom where Alicia Keys was rehearsing for a performance the next night. We managed to get the piano recorded in between the breaks of the rehearsal but had to skip the vocals. We went back to Gordon’s studio to listen back to the weeks’ work and enjoy a scotch when we decided to take a stab at recording the vocals. This was at 1am. It was a special way to wrap up the sessions with Gordon.”

On one of two songs created with Donovan Woods called “One Good Song” Andersen sings about exactly that. He explains, “All songwriters desire to have that one good song that just gets everybody. Not necessarily a hit, but a song that when it’s heard you can’t help but listen. This song is about the journey we all take to get there.” There is no need at all for Matt Andersen to worry about one good song, H onest Man is a watershed album full of transcendent musical moments that should elevate the songwriter from internationally acclaimed to world renowned.

“He has such a great approach and was able to tie- in so many new ideas to what I’ve done in the past without

losing touch with my sound.”

Following an exceptionally successful season, Mark DuMez, Artistic Director, is pleased to announce the Chemainus Theatre Festival’s 2016 season, a line-up that is rich with music, drama, comedy, dance and spectacular artistry!

We love producing shows that excite, challenge, and delight and we invite you to join us in every laugh, song, step and note of our exciting season. What shows will you see? The season features seven main stage productions and includes a new production of the Million Dollar Quartet, as the bad boys of SUN records tear their way up the charts. With Harvey and Hilda, laughter connects character to family, imagination and love. We will rollick through the summer musical with Footloose as generations clash and dance. Four strong women bond together in A Lovely Sunday, our first Tennessee Williams work in over a decade. And the holidays bring it all together in Ralphie’s quest for a Red Ryder, a leg lamp prize and a dream Christmas with A Christmas Story. Falling: A Wake on the Studio Stage and Chemainus Theatre original – Pet the Fish (KidzPlay summer show).

The Chemainus Theatre Festival thrives as people from all over Vancouver Island congregate to enjoy the intimate energy of high caliber professional actors and creative teams from across Canada. We delve in together, taking in the textures of well-made costumes, intrigued by the

clever use of sculptural scenery and vivid lights and sound – all this goodness in a sea-side town full of artistry and eclectic adventure.

DOLLARS &

I hope you all had some warm, wonderful times with friends and family over the Holidays. Seems like quite a while ago now. To me, that is the best part of Christmas.

Sitting by the fire, the decorations all aglow, your favorite beverage in your hand and engaging in warm conversations with your loved ones.

If you have little ones who still believe in the ‘magic’, your Christmas is seen through their eyes of wonder, as the kids marvel at the gifts ‘Santa’ left for them.

In the old days, many gifts were homemade and in some cases took months to create. Imagine the thought and love someone would put into making a gift with a special person in mind. The forethought that, if it was going to be ready for Christmas, they might have begun making it in June.

Ah, the good old days. Unfortunately, today, homemade gifts are rare and store bought is the norm.

That’s the part I don’t like about Christmas. The amount of mass advertising imploring us to spend, spend, spend. The pressure we feel about what to get for everyone on our list. It can be enormous. It

can cause us to overspend.

As the retail stores count their profits from our Holiday spending, many of us will be counting the dollars owed on our credit cards as the bills roll in in

January and February. Many will have stayed within

our budgets and will have a plan for re-

payment. Others may have suc cu mb e d

To provide increased public awareness and financial support for Wounded Warriors Canada, the “Wounded Warrior Run BC” (WWRBC) was created.  A team of dedicated runners will relay run the length of Vancouver Island for six consecutive days, starting Monday, 22 Feb 2016 and finishing Sunday, 28 Feb 2016. The journey will begin in Port Hardy and end in Victoria. Covering an excess of 600 km.

Wounded Warriors Canada is a non-profit organization that helps Canadian Forces members who have been wounded or injured in their service to Canada. They help find thera-peutic programs and solutions for military men and women in need. Currently, their primary focus is on mental health and, particularly, the staggering impact of PTSD and Operation-al Stress Injuries.

Joke of the Month Q: What’s the best thing about Switzerland?

A: I don’t know, but the flag is a big plus.

Q: What’s red and bad for your teeth?

A: A brick.

Q: What’s the last thing that goes through a bug’s mnd as it hits your windshield.

A: It’s butt.

Being behind the wheel is stressful at the best of times. Add in several of the many challenges that can crop up including heavy traffic, being tailgated or cut off, detours, bad weather, screaming children, being late, being hungry, getting lost and you have conditions for a ‘perfect storm’ of stress. While many of the aforementioned are out of our control, taking charge of those we can manage and applying stress reduction techniques for those we can’t can help us arrive at our destination a little less frazzled.

Reducing Stress Behind the Wheel

• start out calm: don’t drive if exhausted or angry, both of which can impair our judgement

• figure out your route before you go, and allow enough time to get there

• if you have babies or children on board make sure to pack snacks/games/activities to keep them occupied

• distracted driving grooming, eating, talking on the phone or texting while driving can kill. Take care of basics before getting behind the wheel. ‘Be aware and drive with care’

• choose a cool mindset: accept that some people will not drive considerately or responsibly and decide that you won’t let them bother you. Get

away from aggressive drivers and don’t make eye contact. Labelling them in your mind for instance, calling them ‘an idiot’ can help get rid of your anger and lets you re focus on the road

• if you’re facing a long commute listen to an audiobook so it doesn’t feel like wasted time

• stuck at a light? Take the time to stretch and breathe deeply, both of which can reduce tension

Essentially what we have control over is how we manage ourselves within the world. With a bit of planning and self preparation we can make our time here and the trips we take great!

Duncan B.C.: On the evening of January 13, 2016, members of the Cowichan Valley Regional District voted in favour of Sunfest Country Music Festival moving the 4-day event to their newly purchased property of Laketown Ranch, 5km outside of Lake Co-wichan BC. The 172-acre parcel of land will be the new permanent home of Sunfest, BC’s premiere country music festival.

“We couldn’t be more excited by the news,” comments Emmalee Brunt, PR and Market-ing Manager for Sunfest Concerts. “The entire Sunfest Team cannot express their gratitude enough to the CVRD, the com-munity of the Cowichan Lake Region and our extended Sunfest Family for their continual support.”

Over the next two weeks the Sunfest Team will be fine-tuning the details and design of Laketown Ranch, with the plans unveiling on Monday, February 1, 2016. The new festival site will provide increased capacity for park-ing, additional space for camping, improved reserved seating, an amphitheater concert bowl and an event that blends seamlessly into

its’ natural surroundings through site design. Festival Management will work closely with the District of North Cowichan to develop a strategic traffic plan for 2016 and beyond.

“What we’re really fired up about is the fact that we can literally build and curate the best festival experience possible,” com-ments Brunt. “Get ready for specially crafted infrastructure, state of the art staging and production, a festival village hub and so much more. Laketown Ranch will serve as a permanent festival and event site, and that’s something to get excited about.”

Sunfest’s new home is similar to the layout of the Cowichan Exhibition Grounds, who has graciously hosted the event for many years. Ticket holders are reminded that their tickets and camping passes will be transferred to the new site with seamless transition.

The Sunfest Team would again like to ex-press their gratitude to the entire commu-nity, the Cow Ex Society who have played to the District of North Cowichan. Thank you!

There is a real treat in store for classical music lovers at the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre this month: the ‘Morning Musicale’ guest artist is Dutch soprano Anne Grimm.

Anne has been recognized internationally for her “captivating voice” (Globe and Mail) and “expressive technique” (Classics Today). She has toured Europe, performed Mozart’s “Exultate Jubilate” for the Royal Household of the Netherlands, and been a soloist with multiple orchestra’s and groups in North America.

Presenting Anne on stage Feb 29 will be internally-acclaimed classical pianist Sarah Hagen as she hosts “Morning Musicale’.

The classical coffee concert series features onstage seating, pre-concert chats and a table of treats. Don’t miss the chance for an intimate, personal musical experience you will always remember!
