TPMS... say what? Ok so if you are anything like me an illumi-nated light on the dash of my car is an irritant and something you want to put a piece of tape over One of the worst things is when some ran-dom light comes on that you have no clue what it means Worse yet is the tendency of some of us (guys come on admit it) to take the ostrich ap-proach to scary dashboard lights

For example the "Tire pressure monitoring sys-tem" or, TPMS, indicator light It's an exclamation point embedded in an artistic rendering of a tire cut out It's yellow and sometimes it blinks Here's the thing if the vehicle you are driving was built af-ter 2007 you likely have a TPMS system on board Listen to me when I tell you this is NOT a warning light you EVER want to ignore Think of this sys-tem as on par with your seatbelts and airbags If the light is on you, my friend, have a problem

How TPMS works Individual sensors installed in each wheel frequently send pressure informa-

tion to the system receiver If the system detects low tire pressure it causes the TPMS indicator light to appear on your dashboard Basically, when this light comes on this is an indication of a serious malfunction This means you need to pull over and start looking for an issue The last time it happened to me I had my entire family in the car on our way to a soccer tournament By the time I pulled over one of my tires was almost flat The truth is, when the light came on my wife noticed it and asked about it My initial (and WRONG) reaction was to say "nothing to worry about " When she disagreed I reluctantly pulled over and quickly discovered the almost flat tire A few more minutes and I'd have risked a lot more than I care to think about

A simple diagnostic test can assess the state of your tire pressure monitoring system, give you a sense of calm, and most of all keep those annoy-ing lights from ever coming on

HOME&LIFEThe Deep Clean.Housekeeping, cleaning house, sprucing the place up call it what you like but keeping our dwelling clean hearkens back to the days we lived in caves. Back in those days a messy cave was an invitation to hungry predators.

cleaner and more organized the abode the easier it is to find things Nothing worse that knowing you have some needed item and not being able to find it Rea-son number two: if you live in a clean, non-chaotic, environment you are more likely to be calm and be able to relax It’s easy to see why people argue and become unhappy when surrounded by a mess The

A half-eaten ham bone in the cave was like leaving a welcome mat for the sabre tooth tiger In those times it was a matter of survival of the cleanest The lazy slovenly caveman was a dead one Simple as that No genes to pass on, no days spent in search of grubs and tubers, no inventing the wheel… just caveman-heaven Nowadays we don’t have large tooth and sharp clawed animals (well maybe YOU do but I don’t) sniffing out our scraps and licking their chops forcing us to throw out our food scraps into the fast flowing river or risk getting mauled So what, then in these modern times, is the impetus to run a tight ship Well plenty of reasons For one the

Another reason to be clean and tidy is that messy houses stink. Have you ever been in someone's house and just wished you weren’t. When people live in filth they go “nose

blind” to their own rankness. It’s just sad really and doesn’t have to be that way.

tackle some odious cleaning chore The reason this works is because if everyone is doing a little bit once per week it keeps the place looking good all month long The best part is by keeping up and on top of the cleaning you can avoid the far more rigorous, and hated, deep clean A deep clean is usually only necessary after a long period of serious cleaning ne-glect Unlike the ‘Thursday clean’ which only takes an hour if there are 4 of you working at it the deep clean can easily consume a whole day and leave you exhausted and certain that you ‘hate cleaning ’ So don’t be a ‘hater’ do the ‘Thursday clean’ it’s good for the kids, it’s good for your health, and you will be happier in the long run

fact is that clutter is annoying When you’re annoyed you pick fights and walk around with a black cloud over your head wishing you were happy and wishing someone would help you clean up your messes An-other reason to be clean and tidy is that messy houses stink Have you ever been in someone's house and just wished you weren’t? When people live in filth they go “nose blind” to their own rankness It’s just sad really and doesn’t have to be that way Here’s the thing If you are like most people you probably don’t like to vacuum and dust and clean the floors right? There is a simple solution and it’s what we do at chez Rideout Every Thursday (doesn’t have to be Thurs-day but it is a good day) we, all 4 of us, pitch in and

One is a doctor, one is a lawyer The lawyer calls the police on his cell phone and they say they will be there within 20 minutes

When we think about filing bankruptcy, we often think that we will be in the hands of the court and protected from your creditors.

In some ways this is true, but you will actually have to pay fees to the Bankruptcy Trustee and just because you are paying their fees, this does not mean they are representing you

In fact, a Bankruptcy Trustee isn’t appointed to you You choose one

The role of the trustee is to ensure that everything is done within the parameters set by the Bank-ruptcy and Insolvency Act and that both you and your creditors follow all bankruptcy rules The definition of the trustees role is as follows:

‘The trustee is an officer of the court who acts on behalf of the creditors in a fiduciary capacity’

In plain English, this means that your bankruptcy trustee isn’t neutral They have a duty to get the best return on behalf of the creditor Bankruptcy Trustees represent the creditors, they cannot represent you. Seeing a Trustee without having your own representation is kind of like asking your spouse’s divorce lawyer what would be a good deal for you in the divorce Since this lawyer already represents your spouse, do you think the answer he/she gives you would be one that is in your favor?

In life, there are always two sides to every situation You want to have your side represented as well

I represent you, not the creditors.

Having intimate knowledge of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, I consult with clients with their best

interests at heart My goal is to protect their assets and settle their debt as aggressively as possible, at the lowest possible amount Once the debt is re-structured I begin our Credit Rebuilding Program At 4 pillars, we offer the most comprehensive credit rebuilding program in Canada With the exclusive products that we offer our clients, we can usually get their credit rating back on track within about two years More on your credit rating in my next article

If you are struggling with debt and want to ex-plore the options available to you, call me I pro-vide a free, no obligation consultation

Talk to Steve or any one of his staff or just browse the 1000’s of titles across all genres Of course, in case you hadn’t heard, you can also download music and play it on your earbuds The fidelity loss in a download is such that you lose a good chunk of the experience There is something spe-cial about an actual physical album that you just can’t get in a bunch of ones and zeros on a hard drive but I digress Back to Cheap Trick It still gives me chills hearing, amid the scratches of diamond on vinyl, the excited screams of 12,000 Japanese fans all packed into the Budokan arena in Japan April 1978 waiting for the American rockers to emerge from backstage The screams are sporadic at first and reminiscent of the type of feverish or desperate screams previously re-served for The Beatles at the height of their reign Once the band begins to file onto the stage, which using your imagination you can almost see, the roar of the crowd is so loud it almost drowns out the music When the guitar and drums begin and lead singer Rick Nielsen begins to belt out “Hello There” the fans really get into it The magic of the interplay between the, very enthusiastic and unabashed, Japanese fans and the energetic and original brand of Rock n Roll that can only be “Cheap Trick”, and can only truly be appreciated

PUT THE NEEDLE ON THE RECORDIf you can get your hands on the vinyl LP “Cheap Trick at Budokan” I highly recommend it. I’m sure you can find a copy at Fascinating Rhythm on Commercial St. Downtown Nanaimo they have virtually every album known to man.

on a vinyl LP, makes this album one of my per-sonal all-time favorites As a young child in 1978 we had a pretty high end turntable in the play-room and it was my older brother who actually bought the Budokan album We would play the album over and over as loud as we could get away with As a result, every note, every lyric, every nuance of that iconic album is indelibly burned into my brain Still today I will put that album on and crank the volume and listen to a band that, for me, was as much a part of being 8 years old as perhaps little league was for others Yes I’ve been listening to Cheap Trick for over 30 years and to me their sound, energy and enthusiasm will never get old If you don’t know Cheap Trick or you haven’t had the pleasure of the vinyl experience well then “ ain’t that a shame ”

The Vancouver Island Wine Industry: an incomplete HistoryPart 1

There may have been people growing grapes on Vancouver Island a century ago, and there may have been companies commercially fermenting fruit, but until 1990 there was no one growing grapes and commercially making wine from them And this makes sense Vancouver Island was never settled by people who required grape wine in cultural and religious context as in Cali-fornia for example We have a different history No, we drank wine if we liked But most likely the early settlers of Vancouver Island grew American varieties such as Concord to make jelly or juice Our wine history was slow to erupt

The large influx of Italian, Portuguese and German immigrants in the 50's created a heightened inter-est in growing grapes in backyards Wine making clubs flourished The Italian, Portuguese and Ger-man communities all over Vancouver Island were joining together to bring up refrigerated trucks from California filled with crates of Zinfandel and Palo-mino grapes This was prevalent in the 60's and 70's and immigrant kids can remember the Saturday ar-rival in September of the trucks when Dad dragged us out to the arranged location and we loaded a hun-dred pounds of grapes into the back of the car, or if you were lucky enough, the truck

This still continues to some extent today, but many of those early immigrant hobby winemak-ers were still not satisfied They tried growing grapevines from where ever they could find them From a neighbour, or a friend, or a friend of a friend Some more dedicated individuals contin-ually visited the Agriculture Research Station in Saanichton with hopes to find something "good", anything that resembled an European grapevine The concords were good grapes for eating, and they could withstand those -30C temperatures the Island never got, but they didn't make the kind of wine the European immigrants were used to

What these more dedicated individuals did not know was that it wasn't really about what could grow on Vancouver Island that dictated the grapevines that were available, but that a whole grape industry heavily controlled by government law, regulation and policy was the reason they could not find their beloved Merlot, Pinot Grigio, or Riesling, or any other European vinifera va-riety Quarantine regulations and import restric-tions hindered the efforts of these early grape growing pioneers So they waited!

Epitaph

When they come for me, whether they are angels, hunters with crossbows and hounds, cherubs in plastic armour from Honest Ed’s, or the guys from Scott’s College Movers – when they come, for they will, inevitably, one day arrive, they will cart my cold dead corpse away and say he is gone forever and will not be back. If they say I made some bad decisions, if they say I could have done more to let my loved ones know how deeply they were loved, it is true, for one can always do more and it is never enough.

The show promises to be an absolutely hilarious evening featuring four female comedians: Katie Ellen, Brynn

Peebles, Alicia Tobin and your host Erica Sigurdson

Rideout: Tell me about the comedy show you are hosting at the Cowichan Theatre:

Sigurdson: The show really started few years back by Ardelle Fitzpatrick to give a forum for female stand-up comedians and has just grown from there Truly

it is just a great night of comedy for men or for women But when you get 65% - 70% women in a crowd the show can really be an unfor-gettable experience

Rideout: What was the inspira-tion for I am Woman hear me laff?

Sigurdson: It really is a situa-tion where female comics are performing with no particular political bent Just a fun night of laughter and celebrating women

Rideout: Where do you find your inspiration?

Sigurdson: Just life Hard to say I guess It’s actually one of the more

difficult questions It’s like asking an artist where they get their inspiration I rarely sit down to write a joke Things happen and you just say “huh?” and you think about it and talk about it Some-times just a little thing can morph into a bigger thing and ultimately become the mainstay in a comedy piece

Rideout: When inspiration comes to you…how do you remember it? Do you write it down?

Sigurdson: Sometimes I think I will re-member it and I don’t and then it’s like “ugghh…what was that thing…” It drives me crazy sometimes I make

Erica SigurdsonFeature Interview with Erica Sigurdson well-known for her performances on CBC’s “The Debaters” and appearances at comedy festivals across Canada. Sigurdson is a highly esteemed Canadian stand-up comedian and, lucky for us, host of the live comedy show “I am Woman hear me laff” coming May 22, 2015 at 7:30PM to the Cowichan Theatre.

Interview by Simon Rideout in collaboration with Shelley Johnstone

short notes sometimes just using one or two trig-ger words For me though I really don’t write jokes down I have come to realize that, for me, the process is much more fluid The joke is, of course, the words we choose but it’s also your personality and the faces you make and so on…

Rideout: What made you want to be a comic?

Sigurdson : The 1st time I saw comedy was at 6 years old watching Johnny Carson with my dad He was laughing so hard and I just thought…that’s what I want to do I never really told people I wanted to get into comedy but I just knew that’s what I wanted to do

Rideout: What was the last thing that made you laugh out loud? What type of humor do you dig?

Sigurdson: I’m a big fan Jim Gaffigan humour What really makes me laugh is slapstick Not very high-brow of me but then I’m not that high-brow Even just watching Jack Tripper in the old TV sitcom “Three’s Company” doing something stupid like falling over coffee table would abso-lutely cause me to lose it Same thing watching Manuel getting a tray in the face in Faulty towers

Rideout: Do you still get asked “… what's be-ing a female comedian like?”

Sigurdson: Yeah, I get asked that question less and less I really don’t know anything else I’ve never been a male comedian (*laughs) It’s almost too bad that it’s still acceptable to think that any given vocation is not a great job for a woman Comedy is comedy and the fact of my being a woman, as Tina Fey would say, has not really af-fected me, in any negative way, personally

Rideout: Have you noticed the industry im-proving in regards to feminism since your started your career?

Sigurdson: Definitely – not just comedy If you look at any industry women have been under-represented Hopefully the evolution of human kind is that women gain ground in equality in everything When I started there were maybe one or two women on any given comedy panel but the mix has changed to half men half women It helps having so many powerful an influential women in Hollywood such as Tina Fey not to mention the many female comedians that have come before including Joan Rivers, Carol Burnett, and Rose-anne Barr to name a few

Put the devices away before bed. Many people don’t realize that watching TV or using your handheld screen, whether a smart-phone, tablet or computer, negatively impacts your sleep

What happens is the light from these different de-vices trick your brain in to being alert Blue light suppresses the production of melatonin which is used to regulate your circadian rhythm De-creased melatonin equals an abnormal circadian rhythm and this is not good for our health on many different levels Disruptions to circadian rhythms have been associated with a number of serious diseases, including cancer, diabetes, depression and heart disease After food and water, light has the largest effects on our lives So it is not to be messed with!

One is located in Washington State somewhere and the other is in Louisiana Makes sense right? Yeah, no not really At least not until you un-derstand what they are looking for It’s actually not “looking” at all in the traditional sense it’s more what they are trying to detect This special type of telescope, which cost 365 million dollars (funding provided courtesy the National Science Foundation) is actually designed to sense small tremors in the fabric of space-time (known as gravitational waves) as predicted by (who else?) Einstein as part of his theory of relativity Space-time can be thought of as the fabric of space Ein-stein predicted that it will undulate or move when large things happen in space such as when stars collide or explode The reason they built, not one but, two of these massively expensive and physi-cally enormous 8KM telescopes is because, like ears, they need to work in synchronicity to inde-pendently detect and verify any potential space-time tremors

How does this relate to us regular folk? Well I find it interesting that many people are so caught up trying to juggle their lives just to get to work on time, get the shopping done, pay the bills and find some time to relax or take in some entertain-ment Still others have an even tougher time and, as we see in the news, some folks just completely can’t cope at all Yet, fortunately, there are those among us who spend time actually thinking

about the fabric of space and time and ways to better un-derstand and even mea-sure it It’s just amazing! What will come out of it is hard to say I’m sure it was hard for Alexander Gra-ham Bell, a Canadian, to imagine the rise of the smartphone when he was busy trying to figure out how to convert sound waves into analogue code that could be deconstructed, sent down a wire, and then re-constructed on the other end of the wire If they do detect a bump in space and time it’s hard to imagine how this might change our understanding of the universe or what, if any, practical applications may come of an un-derstanding of bends or ‘warps’ in space-time It’s so inspiring and motivating to think beyond ourselves and to think big thoughts and to follow big science So for May 2015 Simon says: as long as you’re thinking why not try thinking about the universe, the world, your place in it and how to make it the best it can be Make your gravitation-al ripple count for something positive

SaysSimonMake a ripple. The best and brightest have built a new type of telescope in the US. Actually they made two of them.
