st was an exciting day, because

the book orders finally arrived. Actually, this was a bad day for me too. Do you know why? The books are so heavy!

Do you like books? If you do, and you’re new in this school, we have Book Orders! You can choose books from a catalogue and order them with your classroom teacher. In one month your books will arrive!

Key Assignment Day

Showing others about what we’re learning is what Key Assignment Days are about.

Our first Key Assignment Day was on 19 Oct. 2013.

The third grade class visited two Key Assignments that day. The first was the Pre-K’s and K’s Chinese Key Assignment. They did a big performance about a girl that doesn’t let anyone in her house. Later, she starts to feel lonely and invites everyone to stay and play. I enjoyed the show.

The other key assignment was the Grade 6’s. Their K. A. was about science and geography. They had an elaborate game which used students as game pieces. Students rolled the dice and answered questions. Some of the questions were very hard.

The Grade 3’s didn’t do a K. A., but we will be doing one in a few months!

Recently, I interviewed a QCCI Bus Driver named Wang Shuai.

This driver always plays with me when I catch the bus in the morning, and in the afternoon. He even plays with me while he is driving. He drives a small bus and the bus number is number 10. He loves to pick up students every day and he is handsome. Also, he is the only driver that picks up students from afterschool activities. I heard that Mr. Wang is the youngest driver at QISS. That`s why he is handsome. I know that he cares for the students because he usually drives slowly for safety. Even on

Saturday, our driver works for the Director`s Swimming & Ms. Emily Zhang`s Learning Resource Center English Program.

Mr. Shuai’s English name is Andy but most of the people call him his Chinese name.

I love you, Mr. Driver Wang Shuai!

Do you know what a water cycle is? Do you know how water transforms? Let me tell you.

First, water collects in a puddle. When the water gets hot, it will evaporate (evaporation). It will transform into water vapor and float up high in the sky (precipitation). If there is enough water vapor, a new, clean white cloud. The cloud will store the water vapor and if it collects

enough, the cloud will turn dark and rain (condensation).

It will repeat again and again. It never stops!

Elia interviews Mr. Anderson

The girls’ volley ball team won their game. They were awesome. In soccer, the girls’ team lost 3-1. The boys’ team tied 1-1.

The following Friday, the girls soccer team won! Also, the next day they won! The lower school soccer team lost the 1st match, 4-1 vs ISQ. Then they won the second match, 8-2 vs the GFU Eagles!

Also, there was the volleyball match between the girls team vs. the teachers. The girls’ team won! The girls’ team won 2 matches to 1!

I had a chance to interview Coach Anderson about the Upper School boys ACAMIS tournament in Beijing. The sharks won 2 of 4 games, and played well against the top team. Jorgen Beck was named MVP. Go Sharks!

Lily’s Birthday Party

Saturday was Lily’s birthday party. It was on October 26, 2013. On Wednesday, Lily began to give out her birthday invitation cards to the class. On the card, it said: “This Saturday is my birthday. Please come to my birthday party at the water park.” Days passed until finally, it was Saturday. When she arrived at the water park, she saw that her mother and father had already decorated the birthday room. It looked beautiful.

At 9:00 o’clock, all her classmates came and they went to the change rooms to quickly change into their swimming suits. They wore the clothes that the pool workers gave to them on top of their suits. When they finished celebrating Lily’s birthday party, everyone went back to the change room again and took off the clothes to go jump into the swimming pool. At 4:00 they all went home.

What an amazing birthday!

Boo! Trick or treat! Ghosts, goblins, witches, vampires, zombies, and skeletons come out on Halloween!

Did you enjoy Halloween? Did you like the activities?

Here’s something I would like to share: the activities. The activities were in the gym. Ms. Ho and Ms. May did the Boo-loon Stomp. It is an activity where you go inside and stomp on the balloons. Each balloon has a candy inside. Mr. Antonio did Bobbing for Mini-Pumpkins. All you have to do is to catch oranges with your mouth. Ms. Tammy did Eyeball Catapult. It’s kind of like last year’s Bouncing Eyeballs but it has catapults.

Ms. Nadine did a Halloween Mystery Box. You put your hand inside the holes of the box and touch what’s inside. She will tell you that inside is a vampire’s heart, eyeballs, and brains. There are also the warts

of a hundred witches. Don’t be too scared though, I think the eyeballs were peeled grapes, the heart was a peeled tomato, the brain was a bowl of noodles, and the witch warts were raisins. Ms. Nadine will never tell. Mr. Matthews and Ms. Lisa did the Balloon Bump. You throw a ball to balloons, and if it comes down, you get a piece of candy. If you get 2 down, you get 2 pieces of candy. Mr.

Trent did the Bean Bag Toss, Mr. Bertholet did The Magic Pumpkin Shell Game, Mr. D did Halloween BOOOWLING, Ms. April did Witch Hat Toss, Ms. Joy & some of the students from G3 did Pin the BOO! On the Ghost. And finally, Ms. Angie did The Coin Flip. It was a fun

"GUAGUAS DE PAN" LESSON

ELLs had a great time making “Guaguas de Pan” with Ms. Ruth recently. Students were able to use new vocabulary words in a real life situation. Some of the words were: flour, sugar, eggs, yeast, butter, milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract, powdered sugar, icing, bread, dolls, figures, measuring cups, measuring spoons, baking sheet, oven, temperature, time, fork, knife, spoon, rack, recipe, dough, raisins. They also learned verbs such as: rise, punch, mix, add, measure, take, give, beat, let, crack, drop, bake, cook, set, and knead.

The students labeled all the ingredients and set them on the table for all to see and read the names. They tasted and smelled most of the ingredients. They discovered they liked some things but they did not like other things. They followed directions from a recipe and added the ingredients one at a time, they took turns doing this. Diana was an expert in cracking eggs and they did an awesome job kneading the dough. They made their baby figures. They learned an easy way to give their bread dolls arms and legs (Ms.Ruth learned it from her Grandma). They used raisins for the eyes. We were finally ready to bake them and that only took about 10 minutes. We had to let them cool then. It was really hard for the kids to have to wait until the next day to decorate their bread figures. But the day came and they learned to make icing with milk, powdered sugar and a little bit of food coloring. The baby dolls looked beautiful. But the best part was when we ate them. They tasted delicious.

The students also learned about other cultures and how people in Ecuador celebrate one special in the year. . Here is an interesting fact: The word "guagua" is a Quechua word, a language spoken in the South American Andes range and it means baby. We discovered that a similar word that sounds [guagua] is used in Chinese to mean baby and one of the students from Finland told us that a similar word that also sounds like [guagua] is used in her country to call a baby. Is this a small world? By the way "pan" means bread in Spanish. ELL students were excited and happy making their bread figures. They really enjoyed the activity and a lot of learning happened.

I am a grade 5 student. Recently, my classmates and I did our key assignment. In our inquiry, we discussed out beliefs and values. I would like to share with you what happened that day and how we prepared.

The key words in the first part of our presentation were data and results. We interviewed people at QISS about what they believe in and what they are thankful for.

We cut out pictures from newspapers to make our posters and created a PowerPoint for showing the results and data of our survey. Mr. Mathews made a video looking back at our unit.

We wrote our speeches on little cards, corrected the data in the power point and then we were ready!

In the end, with excitement, we went on the stage and finished the process. Everything was good before the PowerPoint showed the results of our survey. We had a surprise for the audience. It was a countdown of the top 5 beliefs and values. But because we didn’t practice a lot with Mr. D, who controlled the PowerPoint, we made a mistake when doing the countdown. Mr. D started the countdown too fast and we could not catch up.

Fortunately, Mr. D returned to the start page after 5 seconds. Everything was fine after that and we had a good time that day.

The LS Student Council will be making ESLR tickets on Monday. If you are caught showing courage, compassion, sensitivity, intelligence or vitality we will give you an ESLR ticket and put your name in the lower school newspaper!

An example of showing courage is telling a bully to stop even if you are afraid.

Someone showing compassion might invite a student who is playing alone to join their game.

A sensitive student might be caught picking up trash they find on the floor or recycling because they’re thinking of others and the environment.

You could be caught being intelligent by helping others to solve a problem.

Students showing vitality work hard and play hard! Even if you’re not good at a game, you can still try your best.

Our Future Field Trip

On November 29, Th Grade 4 will be going on a field trip. We are taking a fast train to Zibo. Ms. Tammy said that we are going to visit three museums and we will meet in the train station instead of at the school.

The first museum is in Chinese and I will translate it. The place is called the Kingdom Qi History Museum. It is about the history of Qi Guo.

The second museum is called Qi Ancient Car Museum. The third museum we are visiting is about soccer. On that day, the grade four class won’t come to school.

Also, Ms. Tammy will dismiss us by the train station.
