Raise Your Paddle

Fund-A-Need: Veteran’s Education Assistance Fund Raise Your Paddle Matching Gift Sponsor Cook Nuclear Plant This winter, 150 veterans enrolled for classes at Lake Michigan College. Veteran enrollment at the College has increased nine-fold in ten years. We thank Cook Nuclear Plant for stepping forward to help provide the resources many veterans at LMC need to succeed as they prepare for their next phase in life. Cook Nuclear Plant’s sponsorship of a $10,000 matching gift for the live auction “Raise Your Paddle” item at the past three Winner’s Circle Auctions, combined with gifts from our auction attendees, has resulted in more than $80,000 in support of the Veteran’s Education Assistance Fund. We encourage auction attendees to raise your paddle again this year. For every dollar you bid, Cook Nuclear Plant will match it – up to $10,000. Thank you, Cook Nuclear Plant!

About the Veteran’s Education Assistance Fund To be eligible, students must be currently serving in the armed forces or reserves, an honorably dis-charged veteran, or a dependent of a veteran who is currently serving. Priority in selection of fund recip-ients is reserved for those who, because of special circumstances, need extra financial support beyond that provided by the G.I. Bill. Funds are distributed in amounts of $50 to $1,500. Money from the fund may be used for: Tuition not covered by other forms of assistance Temporary coverage for late benefits Books and other essential academic necessities not covered by other forms of assistance Costs associated with tutoring or other counseling and assistance Items that may assist in accommodating a disability Unanticipated transportation and living expenses that may be barriers to educational success

Dancing on the Mainstage Following the live auction, join us for the post-auction dance on the Main-stage.

This year’s dance features the band “Top Secret.” The Granger, Indiana-based band was formed by singer and bassist Joe Arnold in 2007 for a single gig at a local club. They didn’t have a name yet, so Arnold named them after what the club owner always said when he didn’t have a weekend band yet: “It’s top secret.” The band and the audience had a great time, and the musicians decided to play together again. David Taylor on guitar and vocals; Kris Hammerstein on keyboards, saxophone, drums, bass, guitars, and vocals; and Michael Bruneau on drums and vocals. Seven years and almost a thousand shows later, they are bringing their classic rock and dance tunes to the Winner’s Circle Auction.

Decorations & Services Eloise Moely and The Tea Rose for designing and

creating the centerpieces, stage arrangements and appetizer arrangements. Eloise has donated her time and talent to the Winner’s Circle for 25 years.

Mickey’s Linen for contributing linen service for the event.

Old Europe Cheese for contributing the variety of cheeses on the Appetizer Station.

The Gilmore Car Museum and Bill and Barbara Parfet for providing the 1924 Marmon to enhance the

evening’s decorations. The College’s Conference and Event Services staff for

the preparation, presentation, and service of everything you eat and drink this evening.

The Information and Technology staff at the College for their booth monitors and charging stations.

The College’s Central Duplication staff for the Winner’s Circle catalog production.

LMC Facilities department for item pick up, delivery, and storage.

To the scores of volunteers who contributed their time and talent to make the Winner’s Circle event truly memorable.

Music, Light & Sound A special thanks to AudioBahn Productions specializing in audio reinforcement, lighting, video, staging, and event production/coordination. For the past four years, Audio-Bahn—a leading audio/video specialties company, has been a vital behind-the-scenes partner of the Winner’s Circle Auction. They have extended Lake Michigan College special consideration for the use of their equipment while providing on-site expertise to give our attendees an experience of a lifetime. This year, AudioBahn was also responsible for the production of all the video through the room. Thank you Melqui Rodriguez. To AudioBahn, and especially Brian Roush, thank you. Without your help the show would not go on.

Live Auction Bidding

Live Auction Bidding Instructions Raise your paddle number high to bid. Spotters, placed throughout the room, will assist the auctioneer with locating bids. An AuctionsByCellular representative in RED will confirm your purchase and enter it into the bidding

software. The auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw from the auction any item for which bidding has not

reached a satisfactory level. If any items have been designated as selling with a reserve, the auc-tioneer shall have the right to bid on behalf of the Winner’s Circle committee.

If any disputes arise between two or more buyers, the auctioneer shall reopen the bidding between

those buyers only. Statements and corrections made in regard to item descriptions during the live auction take prece-

dence over printed material. In addition, please check the catalog supplement for further details.

Meet the Auctioneer… Dan McCrery! The 25th Winner’s Circle Benefit Auction marks the first time in the event’s history that a new auctioneer takes the stage. The good news is that we didn’t have to go far to find him.

Daniel Keith McCrery, Jr. is a local boy from Watervliet, Michigan. He’s a Virgo, in case you’re wondering. A 1991 graduate of St. Joseph High School, you’ll most often find him at Tosi’s where he is the General Man-ager of the family owned restaurant. Dan started washing dishes at Tosi’s as a teenager and never left. The only job he hasn’t had in the restaurant is in the kitchen.

Dan, and wife Lori, have three wonderful children, two of whom are now the fifth-generation of the family to work at Tosi’s! He’s proud to be a part of the restaurant’s seventy-five year legacy.

We’re excited to have Dan’s services for the 25th Winner’s Circle. Dan says he’s always talked fast and likes how auctioneers work. This self-taught performer knows how to command a room. We extend an extra special thanks for his help tonight. Dan, welcome to the team!

Auction Guidelines

Tax Information The IRS requires that charitable organizations inform contributors about the deductibility of payments and donations. The following are guidelines to assist you in your tax preparations. We strongly encour-age you to consult with a tax professional, since the IRS has specific filing guidelines that may apply. Event Ticket: The stated fair market value (FMV) of the ticket is $100. The amount paid over the FMV may be considered a charitable contribution. Cash Donation: Tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Non-Cash Donations: Tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Auction Purchases: Bids made above the stated fair market value of the item may be considered tax deductible. Please retain your receipt if using overbids as contributions on your taxes. For items listed “priceless” the high bid of the evening is considered to be the fair market value. Donor-Advised Fund: In accordance with IRS regulations, donor-advised funds may not be used to fulfill personal pledges or pay for memberships, dues, or anything that provides a direct benefit to a do-nor or fund advisor. Therefore, event tickets, raffle tickets, and the purchase of items cannot be paid through a donor-advised fund. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 imposes penalties on donor advisors and foundation staff who do not follow these rules.

Use of Funds

How are the proceeds from the Winner’s Circle used? Winner’s Circle Endowed Scholarship The Winner’s Circle began in 1988 with the goal of raising scholarship dollars for a class of 6th grade students who were part of the “Winner Within” grant program. The program guaranteed students from this class an LMC scholarship if they successfully completed their K-12 experience.

Because of the overwhelming success of the Winner’s Circle, it has become an annual event and is one of the region’s most successful fund raising events. Scholarships now help thousands of students in Berrien County and beyond.

After the second Winner’s Circle Auction, the Winner’s Circle Endowed Scholarship was established and, each year, proceeds from the event are put in this scholarship fund. Since that time, this scholarship fund has assisted thousands of students with their educational endeavors. To date, more than $2 million has been added to the scholarship.

In addition to the Winner’s Circle Endowed Scholarship, numerous other scholarships have either been established or have benefitted from the Winner’s Circle.

Breaking Barriers Mini Grant Program This year, a portion of the proceeds will be set aside to support a grants program for LMC faculty and staff. This grants program gives the College faculty and staff an opportunity to access funds designed to enhance the learning experience of students, whether through field trips, new equipment, or other iden-tified needs within their programs.
