Equine Discussionswith Cal Middleton

One thing we have to do is establish our goal with the horse. Knowing what we are looking for is important, but no matter what the goal is there are some common principles that I use when helping a client select a horse, or selecting one for myself. First and foremost the horse needs to know how to accept pressure for me to be interested. How much pressure does the horse need to know how to accept? That may depend on the goals for the horse, experience of the rider, and the future plans for the horse's training. For example, let's say I am looking for a trail riding horse and I get on the horse and ride him down the ditch next to the road and he spooks when a car comes by and starts to run. What happens next is important. As the horse moves his feet as a reaction to being spooked by the car I would pick up my hands and pull on the horse to get his attention back on me. If the horse gives to the bit and relaxes into my hands, then that means the horse is accepting pressure at that moment. If the horse does not give to my hands and maybe puts his nose up and pushes through my hand or runs sideways to get away from the pressure, or rears up, then that means the horse is not accepting pressure at that moment. Another principle that I use when selecting a horse is the overall trainability of the horse. I can not expect every horse to be perfect, but during my first encounter with the horse I may try to see if I can get

What do I look for when buying a broke horse to ride?

him to learn something new or do things in a little different manner. I can then judge the horses trainability based on his reaction. Conformation and pedigree are also two important principles when selecting a horse. Both can be important, but neither are as important as trainability. Generally speaking, horses can be bred to do certain disciplines. But just because the horse is not bred or built for that discipline, it does not mean that the horse can not compete. There are always exceptions and this article is only scratching the surface of the important principles of selecting a horse. One final principle would be physical soundness. This can be a very confusing topic. It is important to remember that there are lame horses, there are crippled horses, there are sore horses. Then there are lots of horses that are still not quite

sound. It is not as black and white as yes or no. A veterinarian should not pass or fail a horse in a pre-purchase exam. There is something physically wrong with every horse; we have to decide what we can live with and what we can not, based on our goals, budget, future training plans, and our experience. I hope this helps broaden your thought process on buying a horse. I know this is all very vague and I will discuss more details in the future. Good luck with your purchase, and until next time, Ride Smarter Not Harder. Please send your questions to [email protected]

Powders vs. Pellets From time to time I hear someone ask; what is the reason Silver Lining Herbs does not make a pellet or a crumble? I thought I would address this question in the form a short article. The art of natural healing is as old as the earth itself. When God walked with Adam and Eve He taught

Call Your Distributor For Orders:Shawnna Payntier, Progressive Equine Services, 702-541-1274www.progressiveequineservices.com

them about the vegetation and how to use it. From the beginning vegetation has served man and beast well. It has done so for the most part in its natural form of leaves, bark, flowers, roots, etc. With the advent of modern medicine the way God taught Adam and Eve in the beginning has undergone an astounding change. Modern medicine has changed the thought of many people and has also changed the way animals are being fed. Let us not forget that if the fences were to go away, animals would quickly learn to utilize what grows freely from the earth. The best feeds are feeds that are as close to their natural state as possible. There are very few companies that understand how a horse or dog eats in a natural environment. The only reason Silver Lining Herbs does not market live or freshly harvested vegetation instead of powder is because it is too difficult to use without molding. The same reason the hay is sun dried and cured before

baling or storing. Dry is easier to store. To answer the question of pellets and crumbles versus powder products, any time someone does something to anything, they have to be paid for it, thus the price reflects that cost. This is one important thing to consider when you

make a product that can help as many animals as possible. So if you have to pay someone or own the equipment to make the pellet, someone has to pay that bill. The second thing one needs to consider, and no less important, is the quality of the finished product. To make a crumble or a pellet there is more than one way to accomplish this: 1. Something needs to be added to cause the product to stick together, i.e., molasses, corn syrup, etc. If you have done any research on natural health, you will quickly understand that sugars are avoided to accomplish health. This applies to horses and dogs as well as people. 2. Steam is another way it can be accomplished. But when heat and moisture are introduced you have a couple of things happen: first, moisture and heat together make a favorable combination for molding and bacteria; second, when there is high pressure combined with heat and moisture, you are also

forcing some of the natural nutrients out of the feed that would be kept intact in a powdered product. Silver Lining Herbs has had a lot of years taking care of animals of all kinds and understands the repercussions of feeds and the effect on them. I guess you could say that after careful scrutiny we have decided God probably had it right in the first place.

that have run in the All American Futurity. Plus Lady Bug’s Moon and Bugs Alive in 75 made major contributions to modern barrel racing, adding another dimension to the great FL Lady Bug, making her one of our Mares with More. FL Lady Bug was born in 1945 and her breeder was W. A. Yeager of Woodward, OK. She was sired by Sergeant and out of Yeager’s Lady JA by Will Stead. Her pedigree is one strong argument for the practice of inbreeding. Sergeant was bred by S. B. Barnes of Tulia, TX. Yeager’s Lady JA was bred by the famed JA Ranch of Paloduro, TX, and she was registered in the AQHA by Yeager. The sire of Sergeant was Billy McCue who was sired by Jack McCue by Peter McCue. The dam of Jack McCue was Marguerite by Barlow by Lock’s Rondo. Lock’s Rondo was a grandson of Old Billy. The dam of Billy McCue was Sorrel Alice by Chickasha Bob. Chickasha Bob was sired by Texas Chief by Lock’s Rondo. Sorrel Alice was out of Maud by Old Billy. Maud was out of Old Alice by Old Billy. This gives Billy McCue a breeding pattern of 6 X 6 X 6 X 3 X 4 to Old Billy. Old Billy was sired by Shiloh and out of Ram Cat by Steel Dust. The sire of Yeager’s Lady JA was Will Stead, a full brother to Sergeant, the sire of FL Lady Bug. This gives this foundation bred mare a breeding pattern of 7 X 7 X 7 X 4

FL Lady Bug is a legend in the annals of quarter horse history. She started life as an everyday ranch broodmare and ended up in the AQHA Hall of Fame for her contribution to quarter horse racing. She is the dam of horses like Lady Bug’s Moon, a major sire in the racehorse industry that is found in the

X 5 X 6 X 6 X 6 X 3 X 4 to Old Billy. W. A. Yeager was her first owner and when she died she was owned by Marvin Barnes of Ada, OK. In between she changed hands nine times. Her official AQHA record shows that she was unshown and unraced, but she is credited with winning a weanling halter class. The article “The Barnes…Love Those Bugs,” in the April 1973 issue of The American Quarter Horse Journal, verifies that she won this class in August 1945 at Stillwater, OK. Shortly after, the weanling filly made her first move to a new owner, the Flying L Ranch of Davis, OK, owned by V. B. Likins. The Flying L

Ranch bought both FL Lady Bug and her dam Yeager’s Lady JA. It was the Flying L Ranch that registered FL Lady Bug, thus the prefix FL at the beginning of her name. The purchase price was $150. The Flying L Ranch kept her until she was about four years old. So between 1945 and 1949 she was on the Flying L Ranch producing her first foal for them in 1949. That foal was Dusty Laddy by Stormy Day. Dusty Laddy has no race or show record in the AQHA internet records and is listed as bred by Alice Likins. The next foal out of FL Lady Bug was Rocky Bert, a gelding by Bert P-227. This gelding was bred by Glen McDaniel of Pontotc County, OK, the third owner. Rocky Bert, born in 1952, is the first indication of what was to come from the ranch mare that would become a major source of speed. He was an AA rated racehorse with his ROM, winning eight of his 13 races. He was also an AQHA performance point earner. Lady Shelly by Star Deck was the next foal out of FL Lady Bug.

Page 75

Page 35: Winter Issue Working Horse Magazine 2013

WORKINGHORSEMAGAZINE•Winter2013 Page35

She was foaled in 1954 and bred by McDaniel. Her produce record is another indication of things to come. She was the dam of several ROM, including Three Bug Chick, winner

of the Park Jefferson Handicap; Bar M Lady Bug, winner of the Hoosier Derby; Randy M Scoot, third in the Kindergarten Stakes at Midway Downs, and the ROM runner Double Deck Bar. The next McDaniel foal out of FL Lady Bug was Stob by Dunny D in 1955. This horse was unshown and unraced in the AQHA. Lady Lasan by Cowan’s Lasan is the next foal out of FL Lady Bug. This is where Marvin Barnes of Ada, OK, steps into the picture. He bought FL Lady Bug in 1958 bred to Cowan’s Lasan. He bought her from Forrest Simpson of Ada, OK, who had bought her from McDaniel. “I bought her off a friend of mine, Forest Simpson,” Barnes recalls. “Forest had a big ranch at Fittstown, OK. This ole boy came by one day and said, ‘Marvin, you want to buy a good mare?’ Well I was trading horses and I said, ‘Yeah!’ and then I said, ‘Why?’ He said, ‘Well your buddy Forest has a good lookin’ mare.’ He told me she was at the ranch at Fittstown. I knew right where that ranch was. He said, ‘You go up that road where the ranch is and she will be under that broad oak tree.’ “So my wife and I took off and there she stood. And boy she was unbelievable. I give him $1,000 for her. I tried to buy her for $500 but he wouldn’t take it. He said, ‘Marvin I know we are friends, but if you want her for $1,000 you can have her.’ I bought her for $1,000 and sold her three times. How I got her back three times I will never know!” So Barnes kept the filly and then sold FL Lady Bug to Pete Winters of Ada, OK. Barnes was a horse trader and so the filly, Lady Lasan, was also traded off. But in the mean time he was realizing that the FL Lady Bugs can

run. Barnes explains, “The first one I got out of her was Lady Lasan. I traded her for a bunch of sheep. Then I got her back when I realized her foals could run. The guy I traded

to made her a riding horse to go get his cows. He was a

dairyman. When I got her back I put her in training and she runs an AAA the first out and she still had a foal at her side.” Lady Lasan went to the racetrack to earn her ROM with 10 first or seconds in 13 starts and an AAA

rating on the racetrack. She became the dam of eight ROM racehorses with the leading winner being Top Bug, winner of four stakes races, including the Colorado Lassie Futurity.Top Bug was third in the 1968 All American Futurity. When Lady Lasan was bred to Top Moon the result was Moon’s Lady Bug, an ROM runner. At this point the barrel racing influence from the FL Lady Bug family becomes apparent. Moon’s Lady Bug was the dam of Bold Country by the

thoroughbred Bold Moon. Bold Country earned 310 AQHA points in open and amateur divisions and he was the 1990 AQHA World Champion Senior Barrel Racing Horse. Barnes later bought FL Lady Bug back from Winters. She was in foal to Olee San and the foal produced was Leo’s Showman. Leo’s Showman was AAAT rated on the racetrack with a track record at Sunland Park for 350 yards in 17.76. So again he kept the colt and put FL Lady Bug in a sale and she was sold again. When the new owner decided that the mare was too old, he opted out of the sale and Barnes traded a weanling filly for the mare and that

is how she came back to Marvin Barnes.. FL Lady Bug was put in the sale bred to Leopie. The foal produced from this mating was Lady Bug Leo who would go on to be an AAA rated runner and a stakes winner in the Columbus Futurity. Lady Bug Leo went to the broodmare band to produce 14 foals with 10 starters with eight ROM and one stakes horse. The stakes horse was Miss Lady Bug Leo with a third in the Ross Downs Poor Boy Futurity.

“I bought her (FL Lady Bug) for $1,000 and sold her three times. How I got her back three times I will never know!” Marvin Barnes

Lady Bug Leo would form her own branch of the FL Lady Bug family through her leading money winner Ralph’s Lady Bug. Ralph’s Lady Bug was a track record holder at Sunland Park going 350 yards in 16.150, and was fourth in the 1968 All American Futurity. She would become the dam of seven foals–seven starters, seven ROM. Her greatest claim to fame was her son Bugs Alive In 75, the 1975 All American Futurity winner for Ralph Shebester. He won not only the All American, but finished with wins in the West Texas Futurity and the Sunland Park Futurity. He was second in the Kansas Futurity and the Rainbow

bred to Hy Diamond but the breeding didn’t take and she was open. To get her back she was bred to John’s Bar and produced Lady Bugs Bar who went on to be an AA rated ROM runner. This mare has no produce record. The irony of all this is that Barnes had not only been selling FL Lady Bug but her offspring as well and then had to buy them back when he realized what was taking place with the family of FL Lady Bug. Barnes wanted to prove his mare through her offspring and get as many of her foals an ROM on the track as possible. “After they started really running a guy told me about a big ole horse out of her named Rocky Bert,” Barnes says. “They roped on him on Saturday night and match raced him on Sunday and they couldn’t find anything that could outrun him. He was 11 years old. He’d never been on an official racetrack, but they match raced him all the time. He had out run everything. He was a big ole horse weighing about 1300. He was owned by two brothers and I got hold of them and I told them who I was and that I was looking for FL Lady Bug foals. I told them, ‘I hear you’ve got one,’and they said, ‘Yes we’ve got one. And we’re still roping on him and match racing him.’ He had a big ole ankle on his right front. But boy he was a good-looking son of a gun. A big brown horse. I told them they just opened up a track at Enid, OK, and they were getting ready to run the Oklahoma Futurity and I’d like to put him in an overnight race to see if he can get his ROM. I explained that I was trying to get all her foals with an ROM. Back

in those days if you didn’t have a ROM you couldn’t sell it for nothing. They said, ‘We will take him up there for you.’ So I entered him. We went up their to run him and he outrun them three or four lengths of daylight and run an AA time first out. And that is all we wanted was to get an ROM. He would have

been a top racehorse if they would have run him and not roped on him.” This is when Barnes also realized

Futurity. He was named the AQHA Racing Champion Two-Year-Old Colt and the AQHA Racing Champion Stallion in 1975.

The horse trading days of FL Lady Bug were not over, as Barnes sold her again, to Art Beal of Broken Arrow, OK. While owned by Beal she was

Page 37: Winter Issue Working Horse Magazine 2013

WORKINGHORSEMAGAZINE•Winter2013 Page37

that FL Lady Bug needed to be bred to a true source of speed and that choice was Top Deck, the King Ranch thoroughbred who was owned by A. B. Green of Purcell, OK. The foal produced from the Top Deck mating with FL Lady Bug was Top Ladybug in 1964. Top Ladybug was the winner of seven stakes races including the now grade one Rainbow Futurity, as well as being third in the All American Futurity. She was the 1966 AQHA Racing Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. This mare was never able to reproduce herself. She had only two foals, with only one of them starting and going unplaced in one start. Barnes professes that even today she is still one of, if not the, fastest of the FL Lady Bug foals. The 1965 foal of FL Lady Bug was Barnes Lady Bug by the world champion Mr Bar None. This mare was stakes placed with seconds in Texas Futurity, Oklahoma Futurity and the South Texas Derby. She was third in the 1967 All American Futurity. She became the dam of 11 racing ROM with five stakes horses. Her stakes winners were Amazer and Going Ladybug. Her stakes placed

runners were Mr Top Bug, Lela Barnes Bug and Dash It. Some of the grandget of Lela Barnes Bug include Dash It Couper, winner of the Rainbow Futurity G1, and Cash N Balance, winner of the Pines Easter Jet Derby. When FL Lady Bug went to the court of Top Moon she produced Lady Bug’s Moon in 1966. This colt went to the track to win the Kansas Futurity now the grade one Ruidoso Futurity. He came back at three to win the now grade one Rainbow Derby. The 1968 All American Futurity would become the standard for the producing power of the

daughter of Lady Bug’s Moon giving Marvin Barnes a 1-2 finish in quarter horse racing’s most prestigious race. Go Bug Go was the next foal out of FL Lady Bug. He was sired by Go Man Go. This stallion went to the track to become a race winner with a speed index of 86. Miss Paula Bug was the 1968 foal out of FL Lady Bug. She was sired by Paul H, a thoroughbred son of Three Bars. She earned a speed index of 84 and become the dam of six AQHA racing ROM. The Lady Bug was a full sister to Miss Paula Bug. She was the dam of eight ROM runners. Scintalating was a daughter of The Lady Bug. She was the dam of several runners including Easy Winning Lady, a winner of $6,218.20 in the Barrel Futurities of America. So where did the power of FL Lady Bug come from? According to Barners, “I am going to tell you one thing: Her daddy and her mother’s daddy were full brothers and I think it was the close breeding that done it. Everything they tried to do with her horses they could do. Race horses, barrel horses, roping horse, doggin horses–they’ve all been outstanding.” The proof is in the pedigree

The Barrel Racing Influence The role of FL Lady Bug in the barrel racing industry comes into focus with the stallions Lady Bug’s Moon and Bugs Alive In 75. with each making a distinct contribution.

Lady Bug’s Moon was a successful sire of runners and his sire record for arena performers shows that his foals earned 1,303

performance and halter points earned by 38 point earners. He sired 18 ROM performers and three AQHA Champions. He sired one World Champion in the arena, Moon County with 177 AQHA points. This horse was Superior in barrel racing and was the 1977 AQHA World Champion in Junior Barrel Racing. One of the first places we see the

FL Lady Bug family as Lady Bug’s Moon was second, Top Bug (Lady Lasan) was third and Ralph’s Lady Bug (Lady Bug Leo) was fourth. This gave FL Lady Bug a son, granddaughter and grandson as finalists in quarter horse racings premier event for two-year-olds. Lady Bug’s Moon became a million dollar sire of racehorse money winners totaling $4,031,691. He sired 502 racing ROM with 40

stakes winners. His leading money winner was Shawne Bug, who earned $277,023. The daughters of Lady Bug’s Moon have produced foals that have won $13,245,101. The leading money winner from this group was Mr Master Bug, winner of the All American Futurity in 1982. The runner-up in that race was Miss Squaw Hand. She was also out of

Has The Touch, a daughter of Bugs Alive In 75, is not only a money winning racehorse, but also a barrel racing money winner in such events as The Texas Barrel Race Open Sweepstakes as a finalist. She is the successful producer of the barrel horses Alive Firewater, her leading money winner of $37,490, and Chasin Firewater, winner of $34,369. These two are followed by Firewarter Gold, Touch of Firewater and Feelin Firewater. Her record also shows she is the dam of Just Fire Me, the dam of the barrel racing money winners Rarely Fired and First Firewater. Another daughter of Has A Touch is the producer Megga Firewater, dam of Jones Is On Fire, Firewater Rocket and Whole Lotta Cashin all money winning barrel horses. All of these Has The Touch foals were sired by Fire Water Flit. The success of Fire Water Flit and the Bugs Alive In 75 mares puts them on a special Equi-Stat list. The Equi-Stat Barrel Racing Magic

Crosses for the past five years (2007 to 2012) shows that Fire Water Flit has sired the winners of $1,339,216, with $478,681 earned by foals out of mares by Bugs Alive In 75, Shawne Bug or Marthas Six Moons. The #19 all time leading sire of money winners is Alive N Firen, whose foals have earned $576,136, including the NFR qualifier Yeah Hes Firen. Alive N Firen is sired by Fire Water Flit and out of Whichwhich S Witch, whose foals have earned $170,000 in various barrel racing events. Levin Lucille has a breeding pattern of 3 X 5 to FL Lady Bug through Shawne Bug and Bug’s Alive In 75, both grandsons of this great mare. Here are some more linebreeding patterns to this mare through some up and coming stallions. Stoli My Heart is a stakes placed runner in such races as the Heritage Place Futurity G1 with a third. This stallion is sired by Stoli, who was sired by First Down Dash who is out of First Prize Rose, a granddaughter of Lady Bug’s Moon. Stoli is out of Strawberry Silk by *Beduino. Strawberry Silk is out of Painted Bug by Shawne Bug by Lady Bug’s Moon. The dam of Stoli My Heart is Streakin To Music, who is out of Shawne Musci by Shawne Bug. This give this stallion a breeding pattern of 4 X 3 to Shawne Bug and a 5 X 5 X 4 breeding pattern to Lady Bug’s Moon. CS Flashlight is a stakes winner of races like the Minnesota Futurity with ties to FL Lady Bug. He is sired by Royal Quick Dash, one of First Down Dash’s All American Futurity winners. He is the successful sire of horses that have won over $19 million on the racetrack and $110,00 in barrel racing. The dam of CS Flashlight is Easanon, a daughter of

Marthas Six Moons. This gives CS Flashlight a breeding pattern of 5 X 4 to Lady Bug’s Moon. Easanon is the dam of four more stakes winners in CS Night Light, CS Arc Light, CS Limelight and CS Strobelight. In fact this mare accounts for four Minnesota Futurity winners. CS Flashlight foals are just getting started in the arena after a good start in the sale arena. His foals have made him the #8 leading sire of horses sold. His average was $10,125 and in 2012 he increased that average by 39% to $14,100. Darkelly is a son of First Down Kelly and the mare Shawne Kate by Shawne Bug. This gives him a breeding pattern of 5 X 4 to Lady Bug’s Moon. He is a stakes winner of the Blue Ribbon Futurity and the sire of race winners of over $329,000. His barrel horses have won in excess of $72,000, including DWS First, winner of $18,250, and Bully Bullion, winner of $17,724. Some of his more recent winners are Kellie Chick who was the #26 barrel futurity money winner in 2012. This horse was the winner of the 2013 OKC Summer Shootout Championship in the 1D shootout. The story of FL Lady Bug shows that we often find a diamond in the rough and that the diamond can be a very significant contributor in the scheme of things. FL Lady Bug was that kind of mare and she defied the odds when Marvin sold her three times. Yet each time she returned to his barn to fulfill her destiny as one of our Mares With More. By the way Marvin is 93 and he has another racehorse in the barn with ties to FL Lady Bug. He is for sale.

The outside image of a horses foot when read properly is a reflection of the inner most parts of the hoof. To the farrier who has been trained to accurately assess hoof wall distortion, it will be apparent what needs to be done to the foot in order to achieve balance. This will position the horse to perform up to his maximum, God-given potential. However, traditional ways of shoeing horses deal primarily with outward appearance and often do not deal with the position of the hoof as it relates to the internal structure of the horses foot. When a farrier places the shoe onto a foot without considering the mechanics of motion, weight bearing and bone alignment, he will often position the horse to be compromised in his movement and performance. Essentially what happens is the foot is continuously being forced forward, and the weight of the horse is coming down behind the support of the foot creating a continual slipping off of the foundation. Without a firm foundation the horse is set up for all sorts of problems in his future. This reminds me of the old hymn we often sing in church, How Firm the Foundation. There are so many parallels to our faith in Jesus and working with horses that you almost can not separate the two. Just like the horse slipping off his firm foundation, when we lose our focus on whom our foundation lies and try to build our lives on the shaky foundation the world has to offer, we set ourselves up for disappointment and painful times in our future. However when we focus on the finished work that Jesus did for us on the cross, our foundation will be firm and no matter what comes our way the Grace of God will have us and we will be well equipped to overcome any obstacle. We are positioned to fulfill our God given potential. The truth of the matter is that our outward appearance is a reflection of our innermost parts. And when we are sure that we are in Christ it will show in all we do. When the world is crumbling around us we will have the peace that surpasses all understanding and the assurance that salvation gives us. Jesus is our firm foundation and Thank God for that.

Myers Training Stable–leading breeders in the performance horse industry and the home of leading barrel horse sire, Frenchmans Guy, Hot Colours si 102, World Speed AA, A Smooth Guy and Cowboys Cartel si 93–once again topped the charts with their semi-annual Myers Performance Horse Prospect Sale. Hetletved Quarter Horses’ celebrated its 16th annual production sale by returning to the basics. The Hetletved family worked together to bring their foals to the market to offer the foundation pedigree that the family had researched and worked toward for the past 16 years. On August 18, 2013, the family brought the most even set of 34 foals along, with an additional six foals consigned by Tim Teel of Nebraska, to be offered to the public yet. These foals went to six different states as well as one Canadian province. The foals' consistency delivered a solid average in a poor foal market with the overall foal average of $759. There were 22 stallion and 18 fillies offered to the public by our four main stallions along with an introductory set of foals from, Awesome Roany, an up-and-coming stallion to be added to the ranch’s stallion battery. These introductory foals were consigned by Tim Teel, previous owner of Awesome Roany. Lonsum Drift 045, a 12.5% Driftwood stallion, had a foal average of $743 on seven foals. Rolling Jax Copper, 1998 son of High Rolling Roany, offered 17 foals that averaged $882. High Rolling Lucky, 1999 son of High Rolling Roany, had two foals in the sale averaging $875. High Driftin Hancock, a product of our breeding, who is a grandson of High Rolling Roany and also 15.63% Driftwood and 14.45% Joe Hancock, had four foals that averaged $638. Hats off to the Hetletved customers and attendees that filled the 160 buyer numbers of our sale. Top selling colt honors

HORSE GENETICS 101ADVERTISEMENT

Question:What is considered a significant percentage of genes from a famous stallion to be a meaningful influence in your horse's pedigree and performance?

Recharge Your Three Bars Base

Note: There are NO

NEW GENES. What we have today are genes of the great quarter horses only

DILUTED to the extent they are not SIGNIFICANT.

Answer:There are scientific rules of thumb that indicate influences of less than 10% tend to have NO significant effect on an individual. For instance, if LEO is in the 4th generation of your horse's pedigree one time, your horse has 6.25% LEO genes, which is NOT a SIGNIFICANT influence.

Most really good performance horses today have 2, 3 or more crosses to Three Bars, yet the percentage of Three Bars genes is under 10%, again, NOT a significant amount. You can recharge that base with 24 to 26% more Three Bars genes to create better athletes, speed and versatility.
