A brand new year and Continuing Studies is proud to offer an exciting array of program opportunities. Our offerings take the needs of adult learners into consideration with a range of evening and weekend non-credit courses.

MISSION STATEMENT Continuing Studies is an academic unit that inspires curiosity, develops ingenuity, stimulates dialogue and facilitates change among lifelong learners locally and internationally. We anticipate and respond to emerging learner needs and broaden access to UBC by offering innovative educational programs that advance our students’ careers, enrich their lives and inform their role in a civil and sustainable society.

If you would like to withdraw from a course, please contact our office and submit written notice three business days before the course begins to be eligible for a refund (less a $50 administration fee). Annabel Lyon is the author of Oxygen (stories), The Best Thing for You (novellas), All-Season Edie (juvenile novel), and The Golden Mean, which was shortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the Governor General’s Award, the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, and the Commonwealth Writer’s Prize. It won the 2009 Rogers Writers Trust Prize. She lives in New Westminster, BC.

This workshop provides a foundation of the basic elements of visual composition: rule of thirds, shapes, directions, patterns, colors, texture and movement. The primary considerations for photography are also covered: centre of interest, camera angles, ‘camera to subject’ distance, leading lines, backgrounds and foreground interest.

Sculpting: Faces and Figures in ClayMondays (seven classes) Jan 31 – Mar 14

This course covers many topics including; clay preparation, texture, body proportion, anatomy and gesture. Points of reference which define and hold the figure together are developed as figures take shape. Participants will complete up to 4 pieces during the course.

Work on your own painting under the expert guidance of an artist’s eye.

This course is about getting down to work with professional artist Elizabeth Dykosky, whose passion is helping students move forward in their own medium and direction. Emphasis will be placed on individual instruction and guidance, with lectures and short demos to illustrate issues as they arise. Participants are invited to bring their own reference material.

This course covers aerial, overlapping, isometric projection, one-point, two-point and three-point perspective. Participants will create black & white and colour projects based on interiors, buildings and landscape images.

Lino PrintingSaturdays (four classes) Feb 12 - Mar 5

10 a.m. - 3 p.m. $299

Explore the exciting and simplest form of print making. In the 1950’s, Pablo Picasso made a series of lino prints which has since become a popular print making technique. During this course several unique prints will be created and ready for framing. A materials fee of $ 70 covers water based printing ink, ink roller, speedcut carving plate, a set of carving tools, plexiglass sheet, newsprint paper and drawing paper for printing.

Mural PaintingWednesdays (eight classes) May 4 – Jun 22

Under the tutelage of a professional mural artist, learn step by step how to create a stunning mural. Participants will be provided with a 4 x 8 drywall foundation, which cut into three sections, will provide the base on which to create landscapes or human image depictions.

‘Alla Prima’ in Acrylic or OilThursdays (eight classes) May 5 - Jun 23

6 – 9 p.m. $349

Learn to paint ‘Alla Prima’ in acrylic and oil. This is a fast method of painting, usually resulting in a completed ‘wet in wet’ painting in one or two sittings. Emphasis will be placed in creating strong design, identifying value relationships, exploring colour and creating harmony. Reference photos are provided or participants may work from their own images.

Portrait in CollageSaturdays (four classes) May, 7, 14, 28, June 4

10 a.m. - 3 p.m. $299

Collage as a form of artistic development took place during the early 20th century and has continued as a primary form of expression. Watercolor and tracing papers are prepared using acrylic paint with a selective colour scheme and plastic wrap to create interesting textures. Pieces of this paper are applied to a matt board and the image is revealed using glazes of acrylic paints. The result is a unique rendering of the subject. Course includes instruction on facial anatomy.

Take the mystery out of this important gardening procedure. This session covers the basics on pruning shade trees, flowering trees, flowering shrubs, evergreens and roses. Find out why and how plants react to pruning and get the time and technique right.

This is an introduction to the fabulous selection of woody ornamentals available to us here in the Okanagan. Take the confusion out of a trip to the garden centre by developing a shopping list before you go there. Learn how large plants grow so they can be put in the right spot.

Plants and Flowers Saturday Mar 19 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. $30

This session covers annuals, perennials and bulbs. See how herbaceous plants can beautify your garden from spring to fall. One of the most exciting new groups, the ornamental grasses, is covered in this class. This spring you won’t just head to the petunias, geraniums and dracaena palms; a whole new world of choices will be open to you.

RosesSaturday Mar 26

11 a.m. – 1 p.m. $30

If you think roses are difficult to grow then take in this session. You will discover there are roses that take almost no maintenance at all and you can’t find a better bang for the buck for all season long colour. All components of rose growing are covered from choosing a good plant to pruning and fertilizing.

Home Landscape DesignSaturday April 2

Ever wondered why some properties have that wow factor and others are just ordinary? This 3 hour session will take your project from ordinary to extraordinary. All the important topics are covered from the planning stage to the installation as well as the very important “Right Plant Right Place” concept.

Food and Wine PairingSaturday Jan 29

1 – 4 p.m. $99

Join a chef and a wine expert for this hands-on workshop that offers tips on how to put wine and food together so they sing on your palate. Explore how the addition of certain elements to a dish—acid, salt, heat and spice or savory components—will not only change the flavor of the food, but affect the taste and pairings with wines. Sessions have included such pairings as Gewurztraminer with Curried Chicken and Local Apple in Phyllo, Chardonnay paired with Mini Salmon Wellingtons, Pinot Noir and Seared Duck Breast, Marinated Beets and Pickled Onion and Cabernet Shiraz paired with Grilled Lamb Chop and Celery Root Puree. An absolutely delicious and gastronomically inspiring afternoon. Check our website for recipes prepared by gold medalist, Chef Mathew Morazain.

Okanagan Wine AmbassadorMondays (two classes) 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. $75

Become a representative for the local food and wine industry by learning the grape varietals, wine styles and wine producing regions in the Okanagan Valley. Learn about the commitment and passion of the local producers, the process of wine production and taste their efforts as we discuss the past, present and future of the Okanagan Valley wine industry. This course will include the topics of service and basic food and wine pairing and will be ideal for anyone currently involved with or thinking of working in the Okanagan’s burgeoning hospitality sector.

Wine Exploration: Gems of the OkanaganThursdays (four classes) Mar 24 – Apr 14

A gem is defined as ‘art that is highly prized for its beauty or perfection’. In this four-week program, wine will be discussed as an art form that encapsulates the season in which the grapes were grown and the spirit of the people behind its production. We will explore several regions of the Okanagan Valley individually for grape varietals and wines produced – discovering the success stories in our own backyard. A casual and interactive tasting component will provide the platform for your connection to the art form, allow you to determine its beauty or perfection, and thus uncover your own gems of the Okanagan!

From Grape to Glass – In One day!Saturday June 4

9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. $125

Join us for a one day exploration of the wonders of wine – from vineyard to the bottle…and into your glass! Discussion throughout the day will include how red, white and rose wines are made, the testing of wines, barrel aging and how to begin developing a personal wine cellar. Participants will visit a local winery and be escorted through the vineyards. Food and wine pairings will be a fun component – bring a bag lunch and we’ll experiment with what tastes best and why!

Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET)The WSET is the world leader in wine education and is offered in 50 countries around the world. We are pleased to be working with Wine Plus+ to make these courses available on our campus.

WSET courses are taught by Rhys Pender, Master of Wine, educator, consultant, writer and recognized as one of Canada’s leading wine experts.

Foundation Certificate Tuesdays (two classes) March 8 & 22

The Foundation Certificate is perfect for those new to wine; enthusiastic consumers or those just entering the wine business. Gain confidence in dealing with customers, talking about wine and storing and serving wine. This course also provides an extensive tutorial on how to taste wine like a professional and an introduction to food and wine pairing.

Intermediate CertificateTuesdays (six classes) April 5, 19, 26, May 3, 10, 24

The Intermediate Certificate provides a deeper insight into the world of wine. This is the perfect course for those with some knowledge of wine but who need to fill in all the gaps. This course covers winemaking, grape growing and the major grape varieties of the world.

Personal and Creative Writing

Fiction Writing Intensive Tuesdays (six classes)

Two sessions: Jan 25 to Mar 1 and Mar 15 to Apr 19

Explore the fundamentals of writing fiction in a supportive and intensive six-week course with novelist and poet, Laisha Rosnau. Understand the building blocks of story, develop and deepen characters, and write authentic dialogue and vivid descriptions. This course fosters writing and editing skills through writing exercises, instruction, discussion and constructive class feedback. Topics include plot, structure, character development, dialogue, point of view, narrative voice and other fiction fundamentals. We also discuss craft issues and explore fiction markets and paths to publishing. The course includes a final workshop of student work.

Childhood Autobiography Tuesdays (seven classes) Feb 1 – Mar 15

6 – 8 p.m. $199

This course empowers one to tell the story as viewed through the eyes of a child with focus on setting, events and characters that impact one’s formation of values, relationships and world view. Take a trip back in time and discover your history through the experiences of the child within.

Writers’ Workshop Saturdays (six classes) Feb 5 – Mar 12

9:30 a.m. to 12 noon $199

Bring your short stories, novel excerpts, memoirs and works-in-progress to be constructively critiqued by a supportive group of peers. This six-week workshop led by novelist and poet Laisha Rosnau will be based primarily on the reading and critiquing of each other’s work. Facilitated by published novelist and poet, Laisha Rosnau, you will not only get valuable feedback on your own writing, you will learn how to identify what makes a story come alive on the page, and how to develop close reading and editing skills. We also discuss craft issues and explore fiction markets and paths to publishing.

Story Writing Technique Workshops Register for all four workshops for $250

Character & Dialogue Saturday Feb 19

9 a.m. – 12 noon $75

Character and dialogue are two powerful elements that drive a story’s plot. This workshop covers those aspects that make a character unique and memorable; aspects such as physical features, word / expression usage, homeland and work history.

We explore how characters use language to portray inner traits and motivation, and to describe others. We will also examine inner dialogue and various styles of emotional disclosure.

Point of View Saturday Feb 19

1 – 4 p.m. $75

Who is telling the story? Seems obvious? Not so. Point of view can be elusive in story writing and it happens to be an element that requires the utmost vigilance in maintaining consistency. We will explore the task of the story teller in relation to that of the narrator.

Setting & Time Saturday Feb 26

9 a.m. – 12 noon $75

These elements are interdependent and make up the stage on which the characters perform. The time in history will determine the details of setting – a match is required. Setting often changes and is related to, for example, weather conditions, historical events, season, and location.

Plot & Pace Saturday Feb 26

1 – 4 p.m. $75

A writer must push the story forward; promote its unfolding. Using character, dialogue, setting and other literary features, we create a balanced arc of story. Main plot and related sub-plots will be clarified and you explore the skill of weaving all elements together-aiming towards a stellar conclusion.

Grammar Lite Saturday Mar 12

Feeling unsure about your English grammar? Confused about when to use a comma, an apostrophe or the difference between an adverb and an adjective? This one-day refresher course reviews some common grammatical problems found in writing. Learn about grammar basics in a non-threatening environment and gain confidence in your day-to-day writing.

Join author Patricia Donahue (The Mighty Orion) and delve in to; novel structure and length, point of view, dialogue composition, use of metaphor in action and setting, and plot outlines and development.
