THE Silk Route was a historic trade highway, consisting of various routes, stretching from eastern Asia to Mediterranean cities. It traversed China, India, Persia, Arabia, Turkey and Italy. It crossed high mountains, verdant valleys, rolling plains and dusty deserts in a journey of nearly 7,000 kms.

The Silk Route dates from the second century BC to the 14th century CE, until the Ottomans became a world power and ocean trade started to dominate.

The highway was dubbed the “Silk Route” because of the heavy silk trading that took place during that period. This valuable fabric, made from the cocoons of silkworms, originated in China. China initially had a monopoly on silk production until the secrets of its creation spread to other centres.

Silk was a highly desirable fabric, popular in every centre of the world where it was sold and traded. For a long time, Europeans did not know how it was produced, thinking it was like cotton, which grew on a plant.

In addition to silk, the route facilitated the trade of other fabrics such as cotton, and wool; exotic spices, grains, fruits and vegetables; leather, wood and metal work, precious stones, and other items of value such as porcelain, tea, carpets, clothing and perfume.

The Silk Route brought with it many goods that would have a big impact on the countries it passed through. Some key commodities, such as paper and gunpowder, had their roots in China. These became the most valuable goods in changing how the world operated.

Paper was especially important, as it eventually led to the invention of the printing press, which gave way to books, and an explosion of knowledge in institutions from Bukhara to Venice. Gunpowder saw

the development of canons, and the improved lethality of armies which could now wreak massive destruction.

Travellers used camel or horse caravans and stayed in fortified guest houses, or caravanserais, which were typically spaced one day’s travel apart along the route. Fresh animals were available at the stops, and traders could make speedy progress.

Half of the Silk Route’s 7,000 kms passes through China, from Xi’an in the east to the western section of the route. This crosses through the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the fate of the people there – due to ongoing ethnic cleansing – an issue of international concern. The Great Wall of China protected the ancient caravans from invaders such as the Mongols.

The original Silk Route was established during the Han Dynasty by Zhang Quian, an intrepid Chinese official and diplomat. During a diplomatic mission, Quian was captured and detained for 13 years on his first expedition, before escaping and pursuing other routes from China to Central Asia.

The Silk Route gained major popularity during the Tang Dynasty, from 618 to 907 CE. Traders could choose amongst a number of safe land and sea routes to reach their destination. The routes evolved along

The Silk Route was actually a series of routes making their way westwards and eastwards for some 7,000 kilometres across Asia into Europe.

with territorial boundaries and changes in national leadership. The Silk Route, passing through twenty major cities on the way, was a means to exchange goods and cultures.

It also served in the development of science, technology, literature, the arts, and other fields of study. In other words, in addition to goods, thoughts and ideas moved up and down the Silk Route.

The Silk Route also dealt with matters of the human heart. Those riding the camels and horses carried their faiths with them. And during its different eras, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam spread organically throughout the regions served by the routes.

Archaeologists and geographers pursuing research of ancient sites have been the Silk Route’s most modern travellers, the traders having left Buddhist stupas, mosque minarets and church walls along its pathways.

In 2013, China announced plans it would revive the Silk Route, connecting it with more than 60 countries

in Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. A “One Belt One Road” strategy was proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Based on the ancient trade route, it has created the world’s longest and most promising economic development zone. With this initiative, the old trade route once again displays its vigour and dynamism to advance economic cooperation and cultural communication amongst so many countries.
