WORD BASICS: THE HOME MENU
READ THROUGH THE FOLLOWING SLIDES AND FILL OUT YOUR STUDY GUIDE
1. THE HOME MENU
The Home menu is where you find most of your formatting items:
• Clipboard
• Font
• Paragraph
• Styles
2. FORMATTING: HOW YOUR DOCUMENT WILL APPEAR ON THE SCREEN OR WHEN PRINTED.
3. Formatting is elements like font style, size, margins, line spacing, bolding, italics, underlining, numbers and bullets, and alignment.
4. Clipboard
•Place where cut or copied text is stored for future use
5. Copy
•To make a duplicate so you can put it in another place.
•Ctrl + C
6. Cut•To remove part of a document, usually placing it temporarily in memory so that the cut portion can be inserted (pasted) elsewhere
•Ctrl + X
7. Paste•To insert text or a graphic that has been cut or copied from one document into a different location in the same or a different document.
•Ctrl + V
8. FONT-THE LOOK OR THE DESIGN OF THE WORDS, NUMBERS, SYMBOLS. USE THE PULL DOWN MENU TO SEE YOUR CHOICES
9. FONT SIZING-CHANGING THE SIZE OF THE WORDS OR TEXT. THERE IS ALSO A SIZE UP AND DOWN OPTION FOR SPEED AND CONVENIENCE.
Select the text and click either the size up
or down button to change the size or use
the drop down size menu to specify a font
size.
10. TEXT STYLES-AN EFFECT THAT CAN BE APPLIED TO A FONT.11. Bold: Thickens the characters
12. Italics: Slants the text to the right
13. Underline: Adds a line under the characters
14. Font color: The color the text, numbers, or symbols appear as
15. Text Effects: Adds a visual effect to selected words-like a shadow or glow
16. Bullets
•A typographical symbol, such as a circle, diamond, box, or asterisk, used to set off a small block of text or each item in a list.
17. Numbering: The command for the computer to automatically start a numbered list for you, sometimes it will take over after you have started numbering
18. Indents: Increases or
decreases the amount the text is indented from the margin
19. Alignment: The way lines of text
are arranged to the edges of a block of text

20. Line Spacing: The number of the blank spaces between lines of type. In a word processor, spacing can be set to almost any amount of line spacing. Pull down the Line Spacing button on the Home Menu and select the size of spacing you want to use.Types:

21. Border: a line or box that frames the text, use the drop down menu to specify what types of border
22. STYLES: A SELECTION OF PRE-SET FORMATS. SELECT THE TEXT AND CHOOSE WHICH STYLE YOU WANT FROM THE DROP DOWN MENU.
