World War 1•Began as a European war between
Austria-Hungray and Serbia•Eventually grew into a war of 32
countries•Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir of the
throne of Austro-Hungarian empire was assassinated by a Serbia loyalist June 28, 1914•War is declared on Serbia
Causes of World War 1
• Nationalism• the nation is a community • each nation should have its own state
• Militarism
• Imperialism• European countries competing for colonies in Africa &
Asia.• Colonies provided important resources.• Germany had less colonies than France & Britain, felt
they deserved more

Pre-World War I Fighting Tactics
United States and World War 1•US got involved when Germany refused to allow ships from neutral countries travel freely•German submarine sunk British passenger ship (Lusitania) in 1915 taking 128 American lives•February and March several American ships are sunk by Germany, causing the US to enter the war as an allied power

•German U-Boat fired a torpedo and killed 1,198 people aboard the passenger ship•128 American passengers were killed
Selective Service Act
•Requiring all men between the age of 21 to 31 to register for the draft.•100,000 Georgians served in
the armed forces
Georgia and the War•Cotton was needed for the uniforms of
soldiers. Caused price of cotton to rise.•Demand for products improve state
economy•Commercial canning plants were built to
process sweet potatoes and peaches•Meat packing plants open in: Moultrie,
Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah

• Housed Prisoners of War• Ft. Oglethorpe housed German navy
prisoners• General Hospital 6: treated about 10,000
wounded soldiers between 1917 and 1919• Congress passed laws making it illegal to
talk bad about the President, war, draft, flag• Freedom of speech was restricted for the
sake of National Security
