ST. MATTHEW CHURCH GAHANNA, OHIO

CWM CHRISTMAS SHOPPE TO BE HELD SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14 – Thank you for making the Charitable Works Ministry Challenge Collection so successful! Our parishioners donated $53,218.00! The funds provide food and assistance throughout the year to our community, and especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas. For Christmas, we will set up a “Santa Shoppe” where families can obtain gifts for their children. We are asking for donations of GENTLY USED items that would make great gifts for boys and girls. Gifts could be anything from a gently used football, ball cap with team logos or baseball glove to jewelry, scarves, belts and headbands your children have outgrown. For some of our clients, these may be the only gifts their children receive. Please place your donations in the blue bins at the south entrance marked “CWM” by next Sunday, December 8.

MONTHLY DEMENTIA/ALZHEIMER’S SUPPORT GROUP – Are you a caregiver for a dementia patient or have you lost a loved one to dementia? An Alzheimer's/dementia support group is offered the first Saturday of every month at 10:00 a.m. in the St. Gabriel Room (Saturday, December 7). No registration is required. As well, in the case of serious illness, families are encouraged to contact us early allowing the priest and patient to talk about any spiritual needs they may have including receiving the Sacrament of Penance.

INVITE SOMEONE TO COME HOME DURING ADVENT – Now is the time of year when people make plans to come home to their families for Christmas; what better time than Advent to invite people to come home to their Church family here at St. Matthew. Postcard invitations to come home to the Church during Advent are available by the Advent Candle table in the Gathering Space. If you know someone who has been away from the Church, or if you know of a community bulletin board where you could post an invitation to return, please take a postcard.

POINSETTIAS, DECORATIONS AND MUSIC – It has been a tradition in our Parish to remember a loved one by making a contribution to our Christmas flowers, decorations, and music (suggested donation is $10.00). For your convenience, an envelope has been provided in our monthly and quarterly packet of offertory envelopes. Envelopes are also available at the Ushers’ Station in the Gathering Space. On the envelope, please print the name of the person(s) you wish to remember, and drop the envelope in the collection basket (*or access your online giving account) by Sunday, December 8. Thank you.

We are looking for individuals who want to help provide a safe and enjoyable environment for St. Matthew School students after school. Come work 3-4 hours a day, a few days a week in this rewarding and valuable program. FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 1, 2019

PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, ongoing initiatives, and enhancements.

We hope that everyone had a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving; we have so much to be thankful for here at St. Matthew. The annual school Thanksgiving luncheon went smoothly as we hosted over 1,500 parents, grandparents and students in the Hutta and Parish Activity Center. From a janitorial perspective, the cleanup was faster and easier than serving 600 students (?); thank you parents!

Our abbreviated week last week allowed us time to do some housekeeping and organization around the church. Christmas preparations have commenced with Advent, the wreath and getting the rest of our decorations ready for Christmas week.

Based on our security assessment a few weeks ago, we were given several suggestions to raise the level of security and awareness at our school with minimal investment. Simple things like removing outside door handles from doors that are not designated or used for entry into the building. The addition of door trim to prevent outside access to latches which will eliminate the need for bars being placed across doors at night, as well as installing a few more outside security lights in front of the school to light the front classroom windows and sidewalks. They appreciated our efforts to remove bushes and trim trees around the school to provide more overall visibility. The completion of the LED conversion was also welcomed which provides additional light around the campus more reliably and efficiently.

We appreciate this opportunity to provide these updates and welcome suggestions for facility enhancements. Please contact George Harvey at [email protected].

VISITING MINISTRY – Saint Matthew Parish has numerous care facilities for the elderly within its boundaries. In these care centers, as well as in private homes, there are numerous parishioners who could enjoy a visitor every once in a while. When I go to visit or to take Communion, these elderly are so appreciative. Please consider becoming a part of our Visiting Ministry and sharing a half hour of your time each week or every other week with someone who is lonely. If you are interested, please contact Carol Ann Lombardi at 614-478-4328 or [email protected].

THE SAINT MATTHEW ROSARY GUILD meets the first Monday of the month. The next meeting is tomorrow, Monday, December 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the Saint Gabriel Room. Have you ever wanted to know how to make a rosary, or wanted to be a member of a group that makes them? The Rosary Guild at Saint Matthew will provide the instruction, and together as a group, we will make rosaries for our parish community and for others. If you would like to join, please contact Judy Sater at 614-477-8323 or [email protected] prior to the meeting.

THE SAINT MATTHEW BOOK CLUB – There will be no Book Club meeting in December. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the Saint Gabriel Room. We will discuss the book From Islam to Christ by Derya Little. All are welcome!

IN-HOME EMHC NEEDED – We are in need of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to minister to the homebound on Sundays. Recently, two assisted living facilities have opened in our parish area, which has put a strain on our existing In-Home EMHC, requiring the need for additional EMHC. If interested or want to learn more, contact Max Maksimoski at [email protected].

PARISH NURSERY – We are happy to offer a nursery for young children during the 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon Masses on Sundays, but we are unable to offer nursery care during the other weekend Masses due to lack of available volunteers. The safety of our children is our top priority, so we thank you for understanding. If you have any questions about the nursery, please contact Maria Ohalek at [email protected].

PARISHIONER MELINA MCSWEENY IS COLLECTING CANNED GOODS FOR ST. FRANCIS DESALES HIGH SCHOOL which benefits St. Stephen’s food pantry. You can help by donating non-perishable food items (such as, ramen noodles, canned soup, peanut butter, or canned vegetables). You can place your donated items in the labeled box by the church portico doors. She will be collecting cans until Thursday, December 5. Email [email protected] with any questions. Thank you for your generosity!

DIVINE MERCY ADORATION CHAPEL“Adoration outside Holy Mass prolongs and intensifies what has taken place in the liturgical celebration and makes a true and profound reception of Christ possible. I …warmly recommend, to Pastors and to all the faithful, the practice of Eucharistic Adoration.”

ARE YOU READY TO MAKE THIS ADVENT A REAL PREPARATION FOR CHRISTMAS?

Have you ever felt that when Christmas comes around that you’re just not ready? Of all the liturgical seasons of the year, Advent is certainly the most stressful, and it may be the most confusing. Catholics seem to have a good grasp of Christmas, Lent, and Easter. But what is the deeper meaning of Advent? And how can understanding this season help us better prepare for Christmas? Beginning this Advent season, the Sunday Mass Reading Explained sessions will be expanded to help you gain a firm foundation on the meaning of Advent.

Join us along with video presenter, Dr. Brant Pitre, a Professor of Scripture at The Augustine Institute as he provides the commentary on all of the Mass readings for each weekend in Advent.

Advent begins Sunday, December 1.We have 2 sessions each week for your convenience:

Cost: FREEAll materials are provided. No background experience needed to join the session. Come any time, registration is not necessary. Bring your teens!

We gave out 20,321 items (baby blankets, hats, scarves, lap robes, prayer shawls, children & adult blankets, baby sweaters, gloves, etc.) to 53 organizations. Thank you for all your prayers, yarn, monetary donations, making items and help on Distribution Day. God has blessed this ministry so we can help those in need. Please contact Mrs. Glenda Neely at 614-563-0275 if you would like to join and make donations.

WE PRAY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED: Joseph Fancelli, father of JoEllen Fancelli-Vickers; and Ed Kistner, son of Mary Kistner.

USHERS NEEDED! St. Matthew is in need of more ushers for certain Masses. Our priests rely heavily on the ushers to make all parishioners and visitors feel welcome, to administer the collection and also pitch in when extra duties are necessary. It is time for our community to embrace the gifts we’ve been given and we can’t wait to see how God provides for these specific needs. Please contact the Parish or 614-471-0212 for more information or to contribute.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 1, 2019

FIRST PURPLE CANDLE OF ADVENT – PRAYERBeginning the Church's liturgical year, Advent (from, "ad-venire" in Latin or "to come to") is the season encompassing the four Sundays (and weekdays) leading up to the celebration of Christmas. The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas. Advent devotions including the Advent wreath, remind us of the meaning of the season. Also, an Advent calendar can help you fully enter into the season with daily activity and prayer suggestions to prepare you spiritually for the birth of Jesus Christ.

Traditionally, Advent wreaths are constructed of a circle of evergreen branches into which four candles are inserted, representing the four weeks of Advent. Ideally, three candles are purple and one is rose. The purple candles in particular symbolize the prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifices and good works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass; Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation is now half over and they are close to Christmas. The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of His second coming to judge the living and the dead.

As we begin the first week of Advent with our focus on prayer, let us take time to pray the Rosary and meditate most especially on the Joyful Mysteries.

The Annunciation: Humility. Mary said yes. God was asking a great amount of her. She allows God’s will to be done and with that fiat, the salvation of the world is set in motion. I pray that I can put God’s will before my own.

The Visitation: Love of neighbor. Newly pregnant, Mary walks several days to visit her cousin Elizabeth. She is greeted with great joy and exclaims her Magnificat. Despite her own possible exhaustion and morning sickness, she serves her cousin. I pray that I can serve as Mary did.

The Nativity: Spirit of poverty. Mary and Joseph are far from home and she is about to give birth. Rather than panicking, they rely on God who leads them to a safe, warm place for His Son’s birth. They know God cares for them and He will not abandon them on this holy journey. I pray for the grace to depend on God completely.

The Presentation: Obedience. Mary and Joseph obey the law and bring their newborn Son to the temple and offer a sacrifice. I imagine Simeon gazing at Jesus. The Christ for whom he has waited has arrived just as God promised. She continues to trust God, not knowing what lies ahead. I pray for trust in God’s plan and patience in waiting for it to unfold.

The Finding of Jesus in the Temple: Piety. After not knowing where he was for three days, Mary and Joseph find Jesus in the temple. I imagine how scared they felt as they looked for Him and the increasing anxiety they experience as time passed. We look for Jesus, too, and we can always find Him in the church. He is there waiting for us. I pray that I will not find reasons to avoid visiting Jesus regularly.
