Wyke Regis Health Centre The surgery will be welcoming Dr Bordbar as a salaried GP in August. We look forward to him being a per-manent member of our team. We would like to say thank-you to our patients for their understanding and patience regarding the new telephone system. The practice is constantly working hard to fix this ongoing issue and we hope to have it resolved soon. Our ‘friends’ group now have regular Tea Together sessions every Tuesday at the Wyke Regis Health Centre from 2.00 - 4.00pm. They are working on various projects such as digital cham-pions within the surgeries, possible exercise class for less mobile patients and the opportunity for an allotment where patients will be able to grow fruit, vegetables and flowers. If you would like to be involved, or for more information please call Teresa on 01305 831330.

to forget that we are part of a nation-wide organisation with well over 200, 000 members! Our speaker at the meeting was Bob Ford who gave a very interesting talk on the wildlife of Portland. He could tell us about many of the birds to be seen in the area illustrated with photos and videos. Some of our members had a fun after-noon recently attempting the County Quiz. 24 people entered and two teams of four submitted their answers to go to County for marking with the hope of being selected for the final in October! There were four sections of 20 ques-tions each: answers beginning with the letter A, General Knowledge, Mu-sic was the third subject and answers the year 2018. Much thought went into the answers but there was also a lot of merriment when facetious an-swers were given when the correct one wasn’t known. During an interval everyone enjoyed home made cake and tea/coffee and there was a raffle. To find out more about Wyke Regis WI and what we do, contact us:07719 312901;[email protected];www.wykeregiswi.org.uk;Facebook - Wyke Regis Women’s Insti-tute - www.facebook.com/wykeregis-wi/

Your councillor update Weymouth Town Council and Dorset Council:- In my role of Chairman of the Har-bours Committee I have now had an opportunity to visit the harbours at both Bridport (West Bay) and Lyme Regis a number of times and famil-iarize myself with the operations there. The Harbour Master for Lyme Regis has moved on and Bridport Harbour Mas-ter is covering both sites until the end of the season. With good back up staff this seems to be working. I continue to get out and about the Harbour in Wey-mouth. I no longer have any connec-tion with Portland Harbour, although happily it is still the view from my home. I have now been able to have a long conversation with the Strategic Direc-tor responsible for the Harbours as well as developments such as the ‘Pen-insular’ site and the former council of-

fices at North Quay, and our car parks strategy. A good deal of work has been carried out determining the future of Weymouth and I hope that plans will soon come forward with what I trust will be a much more meaningful con-sultation with residents. We have to stop the culture of doing things to our residents and start doing things with you. The new director is very much of this view, too. The work load for Dorset Council is very heavy and I am working very closely with the two green Councillors for Rodwell and Wyke. Don’t be sur-prised if a request for action from me will be responded to by Cllr Sutton or Cllr Heatley, it will be in consultation together. Similarly Cllr Lucy Hamilton and I meet weekly and I am also in contact with Cllr Griffiths. The Executive Advisory Panel ( EAP) for the Dorset Council wide Local Plan had it’s first meeting in August. I sit on this panel and I remain keen that we adopt much more environmentally friendly policies, encouraging greener more sustainable building technologies. It will be good to see a plan emerging that looks at Dorset County area as a whole. I have also been asked to continue my County work on the equality and di-versity EAP for Dorset Council. Which I am pleased to do. Government and local councils are all working towards fully integrated digital services and I will also sit on this EAP. I have asked Cllr Paul Kimber, my fellow Labour member to sit on the EAP for Climate Change but I will attend this when I can. I am a member of the Western and Southern Area Planning Committee for Dorset Council. In order to make an unbiased decision at committee it is important that I do not voice an opinion to residents. I am still however, very pleased to hear residents views so please keep in touch. There are various litter picks taking place across the area, arranged by many different groups, do join in when you can but most importantly encour-age your families and friends to take their rubbish home. Especially if they are visiting Sandsfoot Beach since they are relying entirely on volunteers to collect and dispose of litter. I am pleased to see that the rubbish tipped outside the old Ferrybridge Pub has now been removed. Let us hope fly tipping does not occur there again. I congratulate Cllr Andrew Parry of Dorset Council who is really pushing the Secretary of State for Education to rethink the future of Budmouth Col-lege. Andrew has really listened to the pleas of local peopleThe graffiti on the cycle pump track at the playing fields has been dealt with. Our thanks to the parks department for this. I will say again - this was a hard won facility, we are unlikely ever to have the money for a replacement in Wyke. I had a meeting with officers from the Highways Department of Dorset Council and I hope new warning signs will be painted in Bryants Lane, Shrub-bery Lane and we are also looking at the access problems for Gallway Road.

Cars speeding and general inappropri-ate driving in Shrubbery Lane contin-ues to be a problem. It is worth saying again if you are expecting a delivery and live on narrow roads please tell your supplier to use a small van. I also met Highways planners and am expecting a plan for improving various issues on Portland Road imminently. I am aware there is a degree of disquiet about the fence recently erected by the shops on Portland Road. The fence is within the curtilage of the shop and is within the permitted height. I hope that once pedestrians get used to hav-ing to go around the fence they will be able to do so safely but I hope also that drivers will exercise great caution when reversing their vehicles in this lo-cation. It can be quite congested and a number of children use this pavement to and from school. I still post on my Cllr Kate Wheller fa-

cebook page and welcome your com-ments. I am aware that not all the ward receives the Register so I will be copy-ing this piece into the Facebook page or the on-line Register in future. Please remember; I am very busy and don’t always pick up messages on Facebook so if you have an urgent issue phone 07850 060947, leave a message if you don’t get an answer or email me at [email protected]

Jane. Now, the screen comes up as we pre-sent more live entertainment in Sep-tember, starting on the 3rd of Septem-ber with some literal record breaking from Martin Rees and David Days with their thrilling and hilarious show ‘A Sense of Awe and Wonder’. A night of magic and hypnotism which will feature a real live record breaking at-tempt. We won’t go into too much de-tail here, as that would spoil the show! Then, to continue or drive to foster new theatrical talent after the as-tounding effort of the playmakers in July, its now the turn of the grown ups to write and perform on stage.

The ‘Fifteen Minute Warning’ produc-tion runs from the 11th to the 14th of September and features several self-written and performed 15 minute plays from our members, based on what people would be doing if eve-ryone only had fifteen minutes left on the Earth. But please be aware, the content of these plays is strictly Ma-ture Audiences only, so do come along if you like to see boundaries pushed and taboos tweaked. To support and foster the Dramatic arts in all its forms is a core tenet in the constitution of the Royal Manor Theatre Company and we utterly believe that without a drive to introduce new members to the joy and excitement of theatre in its

many forms, the Arts as a whole would suffer.Following the end of the world, the stage is cleared, the screen comes back down and the speakers are turned to 11 as at the end of September we are screening the excellent Mockumen-tary ‘This is Spinal Tap!’ On the 21st of September, see the hilarious take on the heavy metal rock scene in the seventies, lampooning, with love, the excesses and theatrics of the many bands involved. We have just completed our annual membership renewal and we are so humbled that many of you have pledged your continued support to your theatre and our work. That’s not to say that if you want to be a mem-ber and get involved its not closed, far from it. If anyone would like to dip a toe in the dramatic arts, or just help out behind the scenes with the bar, box office or cinema, do get in touch. All support is welcomed. In October we have a powerful per-formances from Dominic Kelly, Tom Marshman as well as a Rocky Horror Screening and so much more! Thanks again for the continued sup-port from you all on Portland and the surrounding areas, we continue to grow, and hope you continue to enjoy our events and shows.

Swallows Rest Garden Party SuccessSwallows Rest B&B Garden Party/Open Gardens held on 14th July at Martleaves Farm, Wyke Regis raised £1, 200 for Weldmar Hospicecare and West Dorset Women’s Refuge! The weather was perfect, the Rock, Country and Jazz singers performed all afternoon and the superb homemade cakes, prime beef burgers and veggie jackfruit in pitta were enjoyed by all. Over 80 tombola prizes and 22 raffle

prizes were donated and the seven volunteers from Weldmar in Wyke were a great help. Many thanks to all who came and enjoyed the event and made it a great success.

News from Trading StandardsUnderstanding your food datesIn general food law requires pre- packed food to have a date mark. De-pending on the food type this is either a ‘use by’ date or a ‘best before’ date. The use by date is about safety and is the most important date to remem-ber! Food with a use by date goes off quickly even if it is stored correctly and looks and smells fine. You find it on food such as meat products or ready-prepared salads. Food can be eaten up until the use by date but should not be eaten after the date has passed. Most food, including meat and milk, can be frozen up until the use by date too. The food can then be defrosted and eaten at a later date. In these circumstances the use by date will no longer apply, but the food will still be a type of food that goes off quickly so should be eat-en quickly once defrosted. For the use by to be a valid guide you must care-fully follow storage instructions. The best before date is about quality and not safety. The food will be safe to eat after this date but the food may no longer be at its best. Its flavour and texture for example might not be as good. The best before date appears on a wide range of frozen, dried, tinned and other foods. The best before date will only be accurate if the food is stored according to the instructions on the label.Shops can sell food once the ‘best be-fore’ date has passed, however selling food past its ‘use by’ date is a criminal

Donations to MV Freedom and Christian AidIn July a local and an overseas char-ity both received donations from a Weymouth charity. Joe Birch, Julia Moore and Linda Perry, Trustees of Fairbridge Trust welcomed Chrissie Payne from the Friends of MV Free-dom and Fiona Daborn from Chris-tian Aid to The Bridge Fair Trade Shop where each were presented with a cheque for £500. Friends of MV Freedom is a local char-ity which, since 1984, has been provid-ing people living with disabilities the unique opportunity of experiencing a trip at sea. It is run entirely by vol-unteers and relies on fund raising ef-forts within the local community to continue to operate. The present MV Freedom has been in operation since 1994 but will need to be replaced and so the Friends have launched a new boat fund appeal which Fairbridge Trust were keen to support.Christian Aid’s work overseas is never ending but they are now responding to the devastation caused by torrential rain, floods and landslides in SE Asia that have displaced millions of people across India, Bangladesh and Nepal. Christian Aid partners are working to reach those who have lost their homes and livelihoods and are in desperate need of safe drinking water, food, tar-paulin for shelters, hygiene materials, mosquito nets, and food for livestock. Christian Aid also provides longer term support by working with part-ners who train the farmers in farming, processing and planning skills which

help to make them more resilient and give them hope for the future. The Bridge Fair Trade Shop, which is entirely run by volunteers, sells fairly traded food, gifts, toys and cards from around the world supporting work-ers in many Third World countries. The Trustees would like to thank their team of volunteers and all their cus-tomers who make these donations possible. Phil Beer at Osmington Plays guitar and fiddle. Sings a bit. That’s one understated description of this charismatic musician (who also plays mandolin and ukulele). Best known as one half of Folk Roy-alty duo Show of Hands, and much in demand as a producer and multi-instrumentalist, Phil is a wonderful solo performer. Laid back and charming, he’s a great raconteur with an engaging stage presence. He carries his audience ef-fortlessly through an extensive reper-toire of folk fiddle and mesmerising, romantic tunes and ballads, with a fair bit of laughter on the way.Described by The Guardian as ‘where Steve Earle and Richard Thompson collide’, he comes to Osmington for the ‘Gig & BBQ’ event on 7th September.

Osmington Village Hall is the perfect small venue for Phil’s easy charm and effortless performance. The BBQ will be served from 6.30pm and Phil will be on stage at 8pm, the bar will be open, parking is free – a perfect event for a late simmer evening. Phoenix Fundraisers and Osmington Music are working together on this occasion and profits will therefore be donated in support of ‘Ups and Downs Southwest’, working to support chil-dren with Downs syndrome. Tickets are £15 and BBQ prices start from £3.00.

Fundraising Race great success for Hospital A fundraising forest run in memory of two local people who lost their lives to cancer has raised money for Dorset County Hospital’s Chemo-therapy Appeal. The 10km run on 14th July was in memory of the lives of Bonnie Chris-topher and Phil Carpenter. Bonnie was passionate about improving the conditions of working donkeys and dedicated her life to helping them. Phil was a much-loved member of the Weymouth St Paul’s Harriers running club. The event was organised by Jus-

tin Oakley and Sandra Hood a Diabe-tes Dietitian at DCH with support from the DCH Charity team. After months of careful planning, the event attracted over 200 runners who took part in 10km and 6km races through Moreton forest taking in a variety of forest tracks and woodland trails. Over 40 volunteers helped to organise and marshal the event which was generously supported by a num-ber of local companies. Organiser, Sandra Hood said, ‘We are absolutely delighted with how well the event went and how much everyone said they enjoyed it. We were supported by a fantastic group of runners and some great local spon-sors. We couldn’t have done it without them.’Sandra added,‘It went so well that we are planning to do it all again next year and make it even better!’The 10km race winner was Chris Al-borough in a fantastic event record time of 37 minutes – Chris is a dietitian at Dorset County Hospital. The first woman home was Julie Morice who set the 10k women’s record at just un-der 46 minutes. The 6km winners were Ross Wayne and Catherine Dash. After the race the runners were de-lighted to receive a post-race bag including goodies from companies ET Browne (Palmers), Primrose Kitch-ens, Natural Balance, Dorset Tea and Moores Biscuits with paper bags pro-vided by Costa.

Phil Beer, plays guitar and fiddle, sings a bit.

County Hospital show supports Chemotherapy Appeal Members of the popular Dorset County Hospital Players group have made a significant donation to Dorset County Hospital Charity’s Chemotherapy Appeal following a successful show at the Dorchester hospital. The DCH Players are a talented and creative group of staff and ex-staff from Dorset County Hospital. Each year they write and perform a contem-porary show and raise money for DCH Charity projects. The 2019 show - Wardchurch - was a dramatic and hilarious skit based on the popular Broadchurch TV series. Staff ranging from business managers, research administrators, technicians and consultants threw themselves into their roles and performed over

three nights to packed crowds earlier this year.As a result £1,000 was raised for the hospital’s Chemotherapy Appeal and the charity team were delighted to re-ceive a cheque from representatives of the group last week. The Players also supported a member of staff who is part of Team GB in the World Trans-plant Games. Sarah Horton, a research manager at the Hospital, and the director of the DCH Players said,“We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported the DCH Players and came to watch Ward-church this year. Thanks to our regular performers, some new faces and our fabulous band it was an amazing team effort and we were able to raise a sub-stantial amount for the Chemotherapy Appeal and for the Transplant Games.” Simon Pearson, Head of Fundraising at Dorset County Hospital Charity said,“The DCH Players have done it again and we really appreciate all the sup-port they have given us over the years. Without the help of our staff and their families and friends who help to raise awareness about the work we do, we would not be able to fund many of the worthwhile projects which make so much difference to our patients and

July, its now the turn of the grown ups to write and perform on stage. The ‘Fifteen Minute Warning’ produc-tion runs from the 11th to the 14th of September and features several self-written and performed 15 minute plays from our members, based on what people would be doing if eve-ryone only had fifteen minutes left

To support and fos-ter the Dramatic arts in all its forms is a core tenet in the constitution of the Royal Manor Theatre Company and we utterly believe that without a drive to introduce new members to the joy and excitement of theatre in its many forms, the Arts as a whole would suffer.Following the end of the world, the stage is cleared, the screen comes back down and the speakers are turned to 11 as at the end of September we are screening the excellent Mockumen-tary ‘This is Spinal Tap!’ On the 21st of September, see the hilarious take on the heavy metal rock scene in the seventies, lampooning, with love, the excesses and theatrics of the many bands involved. We have just completed our annual membership renewal and we are so humbled that many of you have pledged your continued support to your theatre and our work. Local newsRecently there have been a few minor national and international matters of concern - Brexit, Boris Johnson, Iran, Donald Trump and global warming to name but five - but these have passed me by completely. This is because my waking moments, as probably those of all Senior Citizens, have been completely filled with thoughts of tea and parrots. Of course you will know exactly what I am talking about, and you must have been very concerned that you were the only person worrying about these two things. Take heart, for you are not alone in addressing these vitally important matters affect-ing the world today. Please bear with me however as I provide words of explanation for our younger readers. Firstly, on tea. Senior Citizens drink a lot of tea. Some think it was one of the main supports that kept us going during the war. You know the picture. You are sitting in the street on the rubble of your house, which has been destroyed, along with everything else you own, by a huge bomb. A kindly Salvation Army lady offers you a cup of the steaming nectar, four sugars, with the words “Here, drink this. It will make everything feel better”. It didn’t of course, but it was a nice thought.Anyway, it is reported that the Rubens Hotel near Buckingham Palace - the Palace was also hit by a bomb during the war, but I digress - currently has a bargain offer on tea. And not just any old tea, but Golden Tips tea from Sri Lanka. Not to be confused with PG Tips from Yorkshire. It isn’t likely that that you would mix them up, because Golden Tips costs £500 a teapot full! As a pot holds about two mugs worth of tea, that means £250 a mug - even more than on Weymouth Beach! Mind you, they probably make the tea last longer by serving it in teacups the size of thimbles. According to the experts, the tea comes from the top two leaves and the bud of a special Sri Lankan tea plant. The fat, hairy silvery bud (some people have applied the same descrip-tion to me) is picked first thing in the morning. The cold means that the hairs on the bud stand erect, and we all know what a difference that makes to the taste. It is then sun-dried on a velvet cloth, which turns the colour from silver to gold. But rest assured, next time you visit Hubbard Hall, my In-house Adviser will not be tickling your taste buds with the tantalising aroma of Golden Tips. This is because after a few decades of acclimatisation, I now really enjoy her favourite, which is rosehip tea - but we still keep some PG for guests. Let us return to the tea and parrots. This is not a misprint for tea and cake, but the parrot is a reference, as you undoubtedly realised, to Snowball the cockatoo. A year in the life of a dog is roughly equivalent to seven of our years, but cockatoos live a long time, even in our terms, and can become real Senior Citizens themselves. This why Snowball gets a mention here.About ten years ago he became a You-Tube sensation - Grandson George tells me that this means videos of him

were watched on the Internet by loads of people. I wonder how they do that? Anyway, Snowball was a star because he performed a dance to a well-known song by the Back Street Boys, whoever they are/were, and his dance went ‘vi-ral’, whatever that means. Sorry I can’t help with these technical terms. But why, you ask (if you haven’t already nodded off) am I mentioning some-thing which happened ten years ago? Well, because scientists - always, as you know, my favourite people - at Tufts University in the US have been studying Snowball’s dance moves. It that really a proper job for a grown-up, watching a cockatoo dance? Anyway, they have decided that Snowball’s “re-markably diverse spontaneous move-ments” tell us something about the evolutionary basis of dance itself. You must often have thought this your-self. His movements, they insist, are an ancient urge linked to socialism. That doesn’t mean the Labour Party, but so-cial groups in general. Back in the 1950s rock ‘n roll exploded onto the music scene, and dances such as the Twist and the Mashed Potato followed shortly after. Unfortunately I have little sense of rhythm, and have trouble remembering dance steps, but helped by a pint or two of Brains Bit-ter (a fine Welsh ale similar to a vintage champagne) I was never shy to strut my stuff at the local YMCA hop on a Saturday evening. This involved a lot of head shaking, jumping in the air, waving my arms about and generally behaving like a demented penguin. But now I realise that Snowball and I have a lot in common. He has, accord-ing to the scientists, fourteen different moves whereas my total was nearer twelve, but more importantly they say that he is demonstrating creativity. He is not dancing for food or in order to mate, but in order to interact with his ‘flock’, his human caregivers. At the YMCA dance I was certainly not performing for food, but did have a certain interest in impressing the young ladies present. Over the years my In-house Adviser has been some-what scathing about my abilities on the dance floor. Well, to be honest, she has been downright rude about my penguin-like waddle, which is a lit-tle unfair. My waltz - three steps and a passable reverse turn - and my quick-step (just a faster version of the waltz) have been commented upon favour-

ably by all who have witnessed them. However these favourable comments have not been enough to impress her, but now there is proof that I am at least as talented as a parrot, and what’s more, my moves are signs of great cre-ativity. There’s probably just one way to gather the recognition I deserve,

and that’s to go dancing with Snow-ball. Obviously we have similar abili-ties, so we should perhaps go to an af-ternoon tea dance together. This raises just one snag. I will have to teach him how to drink tea, and let’s just hope he doesn’t come from Sri Lanka!

Fundraiser supports Chemotherapy Appeal Members of the Cattistock Open Gardens Committee made a sig-nificant donation to Dorset County Hospital Charity’s Chemotherapy Appeal following a successful week-end on 8th - 9th June. The bi-annual event attracted over 850 visitors from all over Dorset and beyond to see some of the finest gar-dens within Cattistock and Sandhills. The church held a fantastic flower fes-tival with flower displays, organ recit-als and bell ringing. The Hunt kennels were also open and running events on Saturday and on Sunday Manor Farm opened as part of the national Open Farm Sunday. They also held a Grand Draw in the Fox and Hounds pub on the Sunday evening. As a result the event raised £2, 900 in total with £1,400 being donated to the hospital’s Chemotherapy Appeal and the charity team were delighted to re-ceive a cheque from representatives of the committee last week. The balance of funds from the event went towards

the Cattistock Church restoration fund. Simon Pearson, Head of Fundraising at Dorset County Hospital Charity said,‘Cattistock Open Gardens raised a fan-tastic amount and we really appreci-ate all the hard work and support that went into making the event so suc-cessful. These wonderful events not only raise funds but also help to raise awareness about the work we do and the projects which make so much dif-ference to our patients and the people who care for them.’ The Chemotherapy Appeal is raising money to fund a major refurbishment of the hospital’s Chemotherapy Unit. The project will focus on providing increased choice for patients in how they receive their treatment and will completely upgrade the department in line with the high quality of radio-therapy and cancer outpatient facili-ties now available at Dorset County Hospital. For more information about the work of Dorset County Hospital Charity please email [email protected] or phone 01305 253215.

Da boys are back in town ...again For all lovers of live music then the night of Friday 27th September at the Centenary Club in Weymouth promises to be one not to be missed. It is the next in the series of hugely suc-cessful performances that have been held at the venue showcasing local talent that has been performing in our area for many years. The four groups

that will be playing on the night are ; Crystal Ship, Package Deal, Abacus and XS, names that will be familiar to many of us .The events are organised by Chris Dean and Simon Breakspear, both well known and respected local musicians.Tickets for the evening are priced at just £10 with all the proceeds once again going to support local charities. A raffle will also take place on the night supporting this. Due to the popularity of the events in the past thousands of pounds have been raised. Amongst those that have benefited over the years are the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, Weldmar and more re-cently the Lantern Trust. The chosen charities for this event are the MV Freedom and the Veterans Hub. MV Freedom provides an opportunity for people living with disabilities, the

elderly and young people to experi-ence a trip to sea. The charity is com-pletely reliant on fund raising to sur-vive. The Veterans Hub, based in Wyke Regis, is an initiative intent on creating a space that brings veterans and fami-lies together.Once again it looks like the even-ing will be a sell out so don’t delay in getting your tickets. They can be ob-tained by calling at the Centenary Club or by telephoning 01305 839310.Already planned is the next event for Da Boys. It takes place on November 29th and once again at the Centenary club. It promises to be another night not to be missed.Performing on the night will be Hexagon, The Eleventh Hour and the ever popular Ken Wat-kins. Top Dog Film Festival comes to UK September - November 2019!Calling all dog lovers! A film festival featuring a cinematic celebration of dogs and their people is touring the UK for the first time ever this autumn. The Top Dog Film Festival is a collec-tion of canine-inspired short films, all celebrating the unbreakable bond between dogs and humans. From the scruffiest street dogs to the most pam-pered pooches, and all of our four-leg-ged friends in between, these stories are moving, uplifting and inspiring.‘Humans and dogs share a precious, heart-warming bond, and this brand-new collection of films celebrates the canine companions that enrich our lives,’ says tour director Nell Teasdale.‘Whether you’re a dog owner or just like dogs, these films are guaranteed to make you laugh, cry and fall in love with man’s best friend all over again.’Featuring a carefully curated collec-tion of stories from independent film-makers all around the world, the Top Dog Film Festival originated in Austral-ia. It had its UK premiere in Edinburgh

in May, and is continuing with dates around the country in autumn.Film highlights include:ArthurOn day four of a gruelling adventure race in Ecuador, Team Peak Perfor-mance from Sweden were closing in on the race’s leaders, when a surprise addition to the team changed their course. The athletes were approached by a then un-named stray dog, se-verely injured with a large wound on its back.

The DogistAfter unexpectedly losing his corpo-rate job, Elias Weiss Friedman, aka @thedogist, set out into the streets of New York City with a camera and a squeaky tennis ball. Since then he’s photographed and captured the per-sonalities of 30, 000 dogs all around the world, racking up an impressive 3.2 million followers on Instagram along the way.For more information and to book tick-ets, see www.topdogfilmfestival.co.uk.

By Grahame HowardKilling EveWell, the years really going on isn’t it? It’s almost September and the kids will be going back to school probably by the time that you’re reading this. Before too long that little bloke in the red suit will be visiting us again. The summer holidays are over and some people are now planning autumn breaks, I prefer those myself.Anyway, did you watch Killing Eve? If you missed it, you really missed a treat, everyone’s talking about it. We loved it and can’t wait for the third in the series. Everywhere you go people are asking if Villanelle actually did kill Eve. If she did, then it will be silly to call the third series the same. If Villanelle killed her, she can’t really kill her again, can she? We were queuing at a supermarket checkout recently and the checkout lady was in heavy conversation with a customer about this. Pretty soon, the checkout lady next to us joined in the conversation and a heavy debate began. By this time, the queues were massive and seeing this, the manager ran over to see if there was a problem. He managed to get the checkouts moving again but not before he too, was asked his opinion of if Villanelle had killed Eve. ‘I think it’s possible,’ he replied, ‘in fact, I was thinking of running a book on it. The bets could be quite high.’‘I’ll have a go at that,’ shouted a chap further down the queue, who had been eavesdropping. ‘Are we ever going to pay for our shop-ping?’ Asked one irate lady. ‘We’ve been here for ages.’‘Yes, sorry about that,’ replied the man-ager, quickly hurrying away.We eventually got through the checkout with our shopping packed and we head-ed to the car to make the journey home. Cars were speeding off in all directions and I’m certain that I saw one of the cars with a notice in the back window, saying, ‘Has Villanelle really killed Eve?’The CO mentioned recently that we need to have the lounge decorated as it had been some time since it was last done. I felt this was a good idea as a change of paper can be so refreshing to the eye. I was happy with this. That is, until the CO informed me that, we would be doing the decorating, not a professional. ‘You what?’ I asked, flabbergasted. ‘You can’t expect me to decorate; what about my back?’‘There’s nothing wrong with your back’, the CO replied.‘Well, there soon will be. You can’t really expect me to decorate at my age, surely.’‘Well, if that’s the case,’ the CO went on, ‘perhaps I should put you in a care home.’‘What type of paper should be buy?’ I

asked, quickly changing the subject. After hours of looking at wallpaper, the CO finally decided what we were go-ing to have and we carried it to the car. By now, paranoia had set in as I fretted about how I could get out of doing this task. Finally, I realised that no matter what, I would have to do this. There was no getting out of it, I was snookered. Yes, I agree with you, it was abuse, but I’m not complaining; I never do. The fact was, there was no way of getting out of this project without facing the firing squad. It had to be done. The day finally arrived to start stripping. No not that type of stripping, although I wouldn’t have minded. But no, I refer to the walls. They had to be stripped of the old paper, the walls washed down and prepared for the new paper.I would have preferred to put the new paper on top of the old. I mean, it was still in good condition and who would know if we did this?‘I would know,’ replied the CO. ‘If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing well, so we strip.’I gave her a suggestive look, but I may well have been looking at the cat. At least I would have got more reaction from him.Anyway, strip the walls we did. I was to-tally shattered and told the CO this fact.“We only started, five minutes ago,’ she said, looking at me as if I was mad.‘I know, I know, but it’s the muscles you know. We need to get one of those steam strippers.’‘Well, I’m not paying for that,’ she replied, ‘If you want one of them, you can pay for it.’And I did just that. I shot down town and quickly found what I was looking for. When I returned home, I got it out of the box, skimmed the instructions and filled it with hot water. I read that it would take about 15 minutes before it would start steaming, so I started to do a little manual stripping. ‘It’s taking some time isn’t it?’ I said to the CO. ‘It’s been switched on for 30 minutes and it’s still cold.’Just then, I noticed that the extension lead, that the stripper was connected to, was not in the wall socket.‘Who took that out?’ I exclaimed, point-ing to the wall plug.‘I took it out as it was in my way,’ the CO said, ‘how was I to know that the stripper was connected to it.’I was speechless, I had spent 30 flipping minutes waiting for this to boil and the flipping CO had taken it out of the sock-et. How flipping stupid was that?‘Keep your hair on,’ the CO said, ‘it’ll soon boil. These things happen. Chill out.’‘Chill out, chill flipping out, ‘that another 15 minutes or so I’ll have to wait.At this stage, I seriously considered di-vorcing her. However, I wasn’t too sure that switching off a wallpaper stripper was grounds for this to happen. I also considered contacting Villanelle for her help but decided against that too.I therefore, tried to see the funny side of it all and then we got on with the job in hand. It was hard work and hot too, but we finished it all in no time at all. We were then ready to get on with the rest of our work.Moral to the story, get a decorator, but not me.Bye

Charitable GivingEveryone will be familiar with ‘gift aid’ and there are various other income tax and capital gains tax incentives for giving to charities during your lifetime, such as payroll giving and donating land, property and shares

to charities. But you should also consider it as a part of your inheritance tax (IHT) planning when making your Will.

Gifts to charities in your Will are free of IHT and if you gift at least 10% of your estate to charity, there will be a lower rate of IHT to pay on your estate at 36% rather than 40%. This exemption is in addition to the 100% spousal exemption, your own nil rate band of £325, 000 and residential nil rate band of £150, 000 (rising to £175, 000 next tax year) and any transferable IHT exemptions from your spouse. The IHT exemptions of agricultural property relief and business property relief may also be relevant for your estate, depending on your assets.

You should also bear the charitable exemption in mind if you are an Executor administering an estate of someone who has died. If the bene ciaries are willing, it can make sense to enter into a Deed of Variation so that part of the estate of the person who has died goes to charity. As well as being of bene t to the charities you have chosen, it could also mean that the estate can bene t from the 36% rate of IHT. Deeds of Variation must be entered into within 2 years of a person’s death and you should take legal advice on the tax implications of making such a Deed.

If you have any questions or if you to discuss your Will, charitable giving, inheritance tax or administering an estate, please contact Christine Butterfi eld on 01305 216205 or christine.butterfi [email protected]
