This has been a busy few months for everyone involved in the
fieldof Early Childhood. The Week of the Young Child has come
andgone- a big round of applause for all those who worked so hard
tomake it so successful. Congratulations to the almost 100
awardwinners who received their certificates at the WOYC
banquet.This was followed by a successful classroom visitation
night. Visi-tors toured classrooms at the York Day Nursery, York
YMCA andthe Early Head Start/Head Start Cottage. Thank you to
everyonewho was responsible for participating. Your hard work and
dedica-tion are amazing.
On May 22nd through the 24th the 3rd annual Higher Education
In-stitute was held at the Penn Stater Conference Center in
StateCollege. This years theme was: Building Quality:
EducationalLeadership in a Changing World. Representatives from
DPW, Pa.Dept. of Education and at the federal level, Health and
Human Re-sources, talked about state of the Commonwealth.
Pennsylvaniawas referred to as the cadillac of early childhood
services and asa state to look to when determining where to go next
in the field ofearly childhood. This is due to the dedicated
commitment of somany in the state to the growing field of Early
Childhood Educa-tion.
As we enter the summer months please relax, be safe and enjoyand
thank you for all you do for the families and children of
YorkCounty.

Professional Award Winners
Focus On Our Future is pleased to announce the winners of the
York County Early ChildhoodEducation Professional Awards.
Purpose of the Award: This award recognizes the importance of
consistent, positive relation-ships between early childhood
educators and children in high quality early childhood
education.
Description of the Award: Winners will receive $500 to implement
a developmentally appropri-ate project in their classroom and a
stipend of $500.

Week of the Young Child
BANQUETOnce again, the Week of the Young Child was a huge
success! Many centers across the countycelebrated teachers,
families, and children in a variety of ways. Some centers held shoe
drives totie in with this years PA One Book, Every Young Child
selection. Other centers participated in avirtual strike to
highlight the hard work and dedication of early childhood
professionals. The high-
light of the week was the banquet, which took place at the
Valencia. Kurt Kondrich was an incredi-bly inspirational speaker,
as he shared his own personal journey through Early Intervention.
It is al-ways awe-inspiring when you see a room full of ECE
professionals, and you realize how manyyears of experience and
education are in one room! As teachers stood to be recognized for
theireducation and accomplishments, it was evident that we are
lucky to work in York County, sur-rounded by so many passionate
professionals.
NETWORKING NIGHTThe Y.A.A.E.Y.C. Program Committee hosted its
Third Annual Networking Night Event, "Tapas forTeachers", on May 5,
2011. This professional development event gave early childhood
profes-sionals from York and Adams counties the opportunity to
visit three local centers in order to meetdirectors and teachers,
gain ideas, have delicious food, and network with other
professionals!Throughout the evening, nearly 50 participants, both
Y.A.A.E.Y.C. members and non-members,were able to visit the Early
Head Start and Head Start site at Cathy's Cottage, the YMCA of
York'sChildcare Center, and York Day Nursery. Participants were
able to go on a tour of each site, in-cluding snapping pictures of
their favorite ideas, and visit with a variety of staff at each
location.
Many participants loved gaining great ideas for artwork, room
arrangement, and materials! One ofthe highlights of the night, and
something that many participants commented on, was all the
won-derful dialogue between participants and teachers at all the
centers, as well as how welcoming allthe sites were! With that
said, the committee would like to thank the directors, teachers,
and staffat each of the three centers for making this event a
success! It was all their hard work and com-mitment that made this
a quality event for our early childhood education community! If you

2011 YAAEYC Conference
Save the DateSaturday October 1, 2011 is the date for the annual
conference at Penn State York. Plan to join usthere! Additional

Cathy Horner, an LIU #12 preschool teacher atMt. Wolf Elementary
School was selected toreceive the Teacher Impact Award for
2011. Cathy was selected as the York Countyrecipient along with
4 other teachers from otherneighboring counties. These 5
individuals werechosen from the over 250 nominees. Cathywas
presented the award at the Teacher ImpactAwards Banquet in Hershey
on May 16,2011. Cathy has been a teacher with the LIUpreschool
program for many years and is a rolemodel and inspiration to all.
She was nomi-nated by the present and past parents of herstudents
and many of these families attended
the banquet to honor Cathy. Cathy believesthat if students don't
learn the way we teachthen we better teach the way they learn
anddemonstrates this belief daily through her ac-tions and the
differentiated instruction that sheprovides to her students. The
LIU #12 is ex-cited to have an early childhood teacher se-lected
for this prestigious award.
