Hello,
First, I want to thank the Week of the Young Child Committee for a wonderful recognition event! Unfortunately I was unable to attend, but I have heard great comments about the ban‐quet. Congratulations to all of our award winners! A special thank you to Denelle Sowers, our Week of the Young Child chairperson, for all of your hard work! We have recently ac‐cepted Denelle’s resignation as the chairperson and can an‐nounce that Trish Bissett and Angie Sparks will now co‐chair the Week of the Young Child Committee. Welcome aboard la‐dies!
Another thank you to all who participated in this year’s “Early Childhood Action Day”. What a great turnout! It is wonderful to have such a large representation of early childhood educa‐tors representing York County! Let’s hope our voices were heard!
Upcoming events include the 2009 Fall Early Childhood Con‐ference. Please save the date of October 10, 2009 for this year’s conference. Information will follow in the next few months regarding registration; also check the YAAEYC website for more information.
With Winter behind us and Spring in full bloom, we are look‐ing forward to an enjoyable Summer as well!

Week of the Young Child Activities
Virtual Strike On April 20, 2009, YAAEYC Public Policy Commit‐tee sponsored a Virtual Strike for all child care and early learning providers in York County. The Strike was designed to communicate to families and community leaders about the importance of early learning and child care in York County. Families were provided with information about the teacher wages, the high teacher turnover rate and its impact on young children. Families were provided with letters for their employers about the struggles in high quality child care and early learning. Families reported a new awareness of our plight with funding restric‐tions. One family offered to purchase groceries for the teachers after learning of the embarrass‐ing wages early education teachers receive. The event was a huge success and the committee is already gearing up for next year.
Networking Night YAAEYC’s first annual Networking Night was a great success! On Wednesday, April 22, 2009, about 35 child care professionals travelled to three host centers for appetizers, vegetable Lasagna, yummy desserts and to tour each of the facilities. Lots of folks were snapping pictures and taking notes about ideas they can incorporate into their own programs. The atmosphere was relaxed and fun and I think we all enjoyed some network‐ing time.
A huge thank you to Shawnee Hooper at the YWCA’s Lab School in York County School of Tech‐nology, Megan Penson and Fifi Spangler from the Jewish Community Center Early Childhood Pro‐grams, and Cathy Repman from York Day Nursery and all of their dedicated teachers for opening up their programs and celebrating the Week Of the Young Child with us.

The annual Week of the Young Child Recognition Event was held at the Valencia Ballroom on April 24, 2009. Approximately 300 early childhood educators attended the event. Mary Ellen Pann, meteorologist at Fox 43 News, served as the Mistress of Ceremonies. Kori Wilson gave the keynote address on, “How Insights from the Playground can Bring Everyone Together”. Her hilarious vignettes kept the crowd in stitches. Over forty‐five early childhood educators were honored by the parents they serve as being “Outstanding Child Care Pro‐viders”. Fourteen providers received Early Childhood Education Professional Award grants to implement spe‐cial projects in their classroom or home‐based program. Early childhood educators were also recognized for continuing their professional development by attending higher education classes at the CDA, Associates, Bachelors and Masters levels. White Rose Award recipients were Sue Cox, Debra Reik and Catherine Vernon. Children’s Champions were Representative Eugene DePasquale and Cele McCloskey.
Special thanks to the WOYC Committee chaired by Denelle Sowers and to Martin Library for donating the “One Book, Every Young Child” selection If You Were a Penguin. Focus On Our Future provided the gift cards and assisted YAAEYC with the costs for the dinner.
This year’s event was a hit with those in attendance. According to the survey, 100% of respondents said they would attend the event if held at the Valencia Ballroom. Of those who completed the survey, 94% enjoyed their dinner and 93% enjoyed the program.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey, it gave us great insight into how we should organize the 2010 event. Mark your calendars for next year’s event April 10‐17.
This year at the Week of the Young Child Banquet, YAAEYC awarded two individuals the Children’s Champion Award: Representative Eugene DePasquale and Cele McCloskey. Representative DePasquale works tirelessly at the state and local level to support York County providers and to advocate for children and families. Cele McCloskey has worked with Head Start for thirty‐three years, is an advocate for children with special needs and shares her knowledge with others as a trainer. YAAEYC is proud to add Representative DePasquale and Cele McCloskey to our list of Children’s Champions. The White Rose Awards were also distributed at the Week of the Young Child Banquet. The White Rose Award recipients this year are Katherine Vernon – Family Service Coordinator at the YMCA Child Care; Sue Cox – Director at Stillmeadow Nazarene Child Care; and Debra Riek – Director at the YWCA’s Manchester Early Learning Center.

Annual Conference
Mark your calendars now for the Annual Con‐ference which will be held on Saturday, Octo‐ber 10, 2009 at Penn State York. Brochures will be mailed to previous attendees and cur‐rent YAAEYC members in mid to late August with a return date of mid to late September. Cost will be the same as last year ‐ $25 for YAAEYC members, $45 for non‐members and $40 per person non‐member group rate. Keep checking the YAAEYC website for updates.
Sample the Summer at your Library Free Fun for you and your Children
York County Library System’s thirteen libraries are offering a variety of activities, programs and education during this year’s Summer Reading Club‐ “Be Creative @Your Library”. Children from birth to 18 and adults are encouraged to join and participate in reading and activities in all locations. Sign‐up is easy‐ you can regis‐ter on line or in person at the library and some libraries have special registration and programs that you can participate in and attend as a group. We are also encouraging you as providers to register children and share this with their families so they can participate at home as well as in your Center or Family Home.
Educators have shared that children who read over the summer break are better able to maintain their read‐ing level and young children thrive on being read to‐it increases vocabulary and language development and builds readiness skills.
The Library System would like to encourage you to get involved in summer reading‐it is a fun, free way to en‐tertain your children and help them learn the value of reading. Call any library to find out how to participate and start today! Sign‐up has already begun and reading can be tracked through August 15. Prizes earned by your students can be distributed at your location‐just let us know what you need ahead of time and we’ll get it ready for you to distribute. Early Childhood Action Day
On Tuesday, May 12, 2009 over 60 childcare providers, family members and children participated in Action Day at the State Capitol. They met with 8 York County legisla‐tors to discuss early childhood education and the poten‐tial impact of the proposed budget cuts. Art work and letters were left with all 12 York County Senators and Representatives. Jim Johnston and Christina Harrell, part of the delegation, commented on the positive aspects of the visit.
“Early Action Day was a great experience for me. I had a won‐derful time walking around and talking to different people. I learned a lot by sitting in the meetings and hearing others talk to the Senators and Representatives. It helped a lot that it was my second year in a row there. Because it wasn't my first time there, I was comfortable with what was going on and I was more familiar with where to go and what to do. All in all it was a good day and a great learning experience.”
