PRINCIPAL’S TEAM REPORT School improvement works

The foundations for the new Art area have been poured and the internal walls and fittings stripped out of the Technology area to make way for the new work in that area. A completion date is now set for October this year. A special thanks to the VCAL class and Amanda Hard for their landscape work at the front entrance to the school.

Semester 1 Student Reports

Reports for Semester 1 will be posted out to families in the last week of the school term.

Student Led Conferences

We thank parents and families for participating in Year 8 and Year 9 Conferences over the past three weeks. That students have the opportunity to display their learning and reflect on their work in these forums is an important part of their learning development.

Southern Ranges Cross Country

Yea High School hosted the Southern Ranges Cross Country at the Yea Racecourse last Thursday. The course was excellent and competitors enjoyed the day and venue. Special thanks to Rowan Treloar for organising the event and thanks for the support provided Amanda Hard and her catering team.

School Leaders and School Review

Student leaders participated in a review of some of the school data (2014 – 2016) last Tuesday, that information will go into the whole school review being undertaken next term. Members of the School Improvement Team have also reviewed the school data and School Council will have further input at the school council meeting on Tuesday 13th June.

Queen’s Birthday Holiday

The school will be closed on Monday June 12th for the Queen’s Birthday holiday.

Senior Student Examinations

Year 11 mid-year examinations are scheduled through next week, Tuesday 13th June to Friday June 16th. The General Achievement Test (GAT) for all students taking VCE Unit 3/4 subjects will be held next Wednesday, June 14th, at the Yea Shire Hall.

Students Driving to School

As is the case with many secondary schools, a number of our senior students are driving to and from school. While most young drivers are careful, safety conscious and considerate when driving, they are one of the most vulnerable road user groups. Travelling with teenage passengers adds to the risk for these young driv-ers. Victoria’s Graduated Licensing System condition states that no more than one peer aged passenger (aged 16-22 years) is permitted to travel with the driver, unless the passengers are siblings of the driver. This condition does not apply when a person who is fully licensed is sitting in the front passenger seat.

With this in mind, the school has a responsibility to take all reasonable measures to ensure the welfare and safety of students. Our Student Driving Policy outlines what we expect from student drivers and copies of this may be obtained from the Year 12 Coordinator or the Assistant Principal.

YEAR 12 BIOLOGY

Year 12 Biology students visited GTAC last week where they performed diagnostic tests to identify a bac-terium causing an outbreak of mastitis in a dairy herd. They examined antibiotic sensitivity tests to deter-mine the ideal treatment for the infection and use spectrophotometers to determine the perfect concentra-tions of antibiotic for treating this infection.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS NEWS

Landcare Volunteers

Over the next few months, Year 9 students will be helping Landcare to plant trees in the Yea area. On Tuesday morning, eleven students ventured to the end of Racecourse Rd to work with Chris Cobern, Landcare Coordinator of the Upper Goulburn Landcare network for the first session. Students spent the morning planting small plants and tress beneath an old gum tree that is at risk of dying. The area had been fenced off to stop cattle from causing further im-pact to the soil around the tree and damage to the tree itself. The aim is for the new plants to support the old tree as a place for wildlife and to rejuvenate the compacted soil. The next tree planting mornings will take place in Limestone, down Deep Dean Rd and then a whole days session in Strathcreek.

Community Service Project

Students have been working hard this term to complete Community Service Projects in our community. Projects have seen students assisting the gentleman at the Yea Men's Shed, working with the Kitchen Garden project at Sacred Heart Primary School, fundraising for the Haven and many more. Last week, five students organised a clean up of rubbish along Racecourse Rd. Students removed six garbage bags of rubbish from the side of the road, improving the health of the environment and the school's entrance.

CSP Expo!

On Tuesday the 27th of June, students have invited their Community Service Project partners to an Expo that celebrates and showcases each groups achievements. Parents are also welcome to attend the morning tea and expo which will take place in the Year 9 classroom on Tuesday the 27th of June at 10 am.

YEAR 7 HUMANITITES

It was all smiles in 7B Humanties this week when Riley Slevin brought in a replica of an ancient Indus Valley silo - made en-tirely from cake! After describing the main features of ancient Indus Valley architecture, Riley very generously cut up the cake and distributed it around the class. That is one way to digest new information! Well done Riley on a terrific piece of extra-curricular work!

MATHS SUPPORT

Hi, my name is Andy Lockey and I started teaching Maths at Yea High School in 2017. Bruce Skewes

asked me to write an article for the school newsletter extolling the virtues of maths, so here we go.

As a start, and to help you understand where I am coming from I would like to share my journey through

Maths and education to where I am now. I left school in 1976 with no qualifications and through a series

of very fortunate events, and a few unfortunate ones, ended up with a Maths Degree and a document

saying I could be a teacher. Friends from my school days still smile in amusement when they find out that

not only did I end up as a teacher but that I teach Maths. My attitude to the subject when I left school is

best summed up by a quote I found on the GoogleWeb. “The only thing I learned in Maths was that I hat-

ed Maths”

The reason I have disclosed this part of my history is to say I get it when people have trouble with sums or

algebra or statistics or negative numbers. I was that person at school.

The study of Maths is important for many career pathways but by no means all of them. Numeracy is a

different matter, we all need numeracy skills to help us get through life. It is used to help work out which

phone plan is the best, how to read the electricity bill, has the boss given me the pay rise he promised or

is the salesman in the car yard being fully truthful when talking about the percentage discount he is giving

and the interest rate on the loan.

At Yea High School, we take pride in our delivery of Math and the support we give to our students but,

despite our best efforts, some students need extra support. Parents frequently ask me if I know of any

tutors or do I think private tutors are a good idea. I have difficulty answering, as there are good and bad

and it is difficult to recommend a tutor or organisation without knowing them.

What Yea High School can offer is Maths support for students outside of their nor-

mal classes. All Maths teachers are available for extra help at recess and

lunchtime if asked. In particular there will be a Maths teacher available in the

school library every Monday lunch time. Teachers are also available before and

after school. It is important that if students need help outside of normal school

hours, a time is arranged to ensure that the teacher is available and the support

can be provided.

If any further information is needed please contact me at school or by e-mail at [email protected]

UMNoS Report: What our Yea HS parents are reading.

By Diane Miller

Parent: Tony McCarter father of Connie 8B

What types of books do you enjoy?

Books based on real events and science fiction.

What is the best book you have ever read?

This book I read years ago about a war correspondent.

Can you tell me a little about the book?

It is about a guy who finds these two orphans during this major battle and tries to get them to safety.

What did you enjoy about the book?

It’s an unusual story, not like usual war books. Even though it’s sad the author puts humour into it. It’s an

interesting story.

Has a book ever influenced your life? How?

Yes, when I was younger I read a lot of books on war and that influenced me to join the army.

Jeff Hitchman father of Jake 8A

What types of books do you enjoy?

Technical ones.

What is the best book you have ever read? Why?

‘The story of BSA Motorbikes’ because it was a complete history of one of my favourite motorbikes.’ It

gave a great explanation about a lot of historical facts and science facts.

Can you tell me a little about the book?

It’s a history of a company that started making guns and weapons and evolved after the war to making

motorcycles for the next 40 years.

Has a book ever influenced your life? How?

Yes as I have owned many English motorcycles including BSA’s and it has taught me which ones are rare

and which ones are common which contributes to the validity of the bike.
