Year 5 Just To Keep You Going...12th May

We hope you managed to find out some interesting facts about your chosen country!

Now, imagine you are a traveller and you are visiting the new country you re-searched. You want to let your friends and family know about your trip and all the exciting things you have been doing on your travels. You are going to do this in the form of a travel email.

Time to plan…...

Write a plan (bullet point notes) based on all the new things you have seen and dis-covered. Include key times and dates, specific places you visited and things you did. The plan should be factual key points about the events. Save the description for later! Remember to use your research to help you. There is a planning template on the next page for you to use or you could design your own plan.

-Length of your journey. When did you arrive?

-What port did you arrive at?

-First impressions of the country.

-What is the weather like?

-What interesting places have you visited?

-What famous landmarks have you seen?

-What cultural aspects have you experienced?

-Come up with something exciting or scary that has happened to you.

Good morning, Year 5, and welcome to Summer Term and a brand new topic Five Explore…..!

We’ll be setting you a daily English and maths activity on these pages as well as a few ideas from the wider curriculum to keep you from missing us too much! Be

sure to check in again tomorrow for another update.

Just To Keep You Going... Maths- Calculating Angles on a Straight Line

Today we are learning about calculating angles on a straight line.

Remember from yesterday’s lesson, that an angle is a measure of a turn,

measured in degrees or ° . We need to think about how many degrees are in a straight line, you may know this already or we can use a protractor to work it out. Look at the image below, you can see that the protractor is lined up on the

straight line and goes all the way from 0° to 180°. Therefore, the amount of turn or number of degrees on a straight line is 180°.

Look at the image below, you can see that we still have a straight line but now it is split in two and we have two angles. One of the angles is given (120°) and the

other we need to calculate. We know that the total of the angles must be 180°

because they are both on the same straight line and we know that there are 180° on a straight line.

If we subtract 120 from 180 (180°-120) then that would give us the value of the missing angle. 180- 120 is equal to 60, so the missing angle is 60°.

180°

Just To Keep You Going... Look at the image below, we need to calculate the missing angle labelled w.

You can see that we have been given one angle which equals 10° and also a right angle which is represented by a box, we should know that a right angle equals

90°.

We know that w + 90° + 10°= 180°, so therefore w must equal 80° because

90° + 10° + 80° = 180°.

Sometimes we may be given a straight line which is divided into equal angles. Look at the image below, we know that the angles are the same because the let-

ters are the same. The straight line has been divided into 4 equal parts and there-fore we need to divide 180° by 4.

180° ÷ 4 = 45°, so the missing angles (k) equal 45°.

10°

Right angle =90°

80°

45°

Just To Keep You Going... Look at the image below, we need to find the missing angles w and y. Can you see any adjacent angles on a straight line that we can use to

help us solve the problem?

:

Fluency 5!

1) What fraction of a full turn is 270°?

2) Subtract 2.07 from 8

3) Work out the missing number below:

0.49 + = 1

4) Draw a factor flower to find the factors of 26.

You can see that 70° and y are adjacent angles on a

straight line, so they must add up to 180°. The

straight line that the angles are on is highlighted in

red.

70° + 110° = 180°

Angle y = 110°

You can see that 100° and w are adjacent angles on a straight line, so they must

add up to 180°. The straight line that the angles

are on is highlighted in red.

100° + 80° = 180°

Angle w = 80°

What shapes can you see? What way can you sort your shapes?

Can you see two different types of trapezium in the image below? If so, shade them in. Remember a trapezium is a quadrilateral with one pair of sides parallel.

Look at the image below. Can you see an irregular hexagon? If so, shade it in.

Just To Keep You Going... Back to the ancient egyptians… Learning: This week we will be learning about the process of mummification. The process took a long time, up to 70 days! Read through the slides and make notes - add any additional information that you know about each step.

This video is also interesting and provides further in-formation on the mummification process: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/history-social-studies-ks2-mummification-in-ancient-egypt/zdcrkmn

Just To Keep You Going...

Task: Your task for today is to sketch your own Canopic jars. There are some helpful images be-low. Make sure you have a nice, clean, white piece of paper, a sharp pencil and a rubber. Decide how you are going to lay them out to make sure you fit all four on. Once you’ve drawn them, label them with the correct names and organs that go inside! Can you remember what

they were?

The coffin was called a sarcophagus.

Use shading in your sketch to show dark and

Good luck! We can’t

wait to see the finished

sketches.
