Recent findings indicate that a work-lifebalance is main factor in staff moraleACCORDING to a recent reportfrom a leading expert in leader-ship development, 39 per centof businesses feel work-life bal-ance has the biggest influenceon staff morale, with seniormanagers and board membersregarded as having the worstwork-life balance. When compared against a simi-

lar report from 2009, work-lifebalance is now regarded as themost influential factor for staffmorale, a leap up from its previ-ous ranking of sixth. The research, conducted by

Morgan Redwood, is based onresponses from the heads ofhuman resource departments orboard director level from morethan 250 businesses. These have been drawn from

across the UK and from a mix ofsectors and a range of companysizes, with two thirds employingmore than 250 people, and noneless than 50.Janice Haddon, MD of Morgan

Redwood, said: “The findingsfrom this latest report help todemonstrate the importance ofa good work-life balance – in the

eyes of business leaders at least.“When taken against our 2009

findings, it seems that it’s nowregarded as much more impor-tant than it was previously.“What has caused this shift in

opinion?”As part of the study, senior

managers were asked to ratetheir employees’ level of moraleout of ten (with ten being excel-lent), which found the averagerating was just 5.2.When asked what factors were

most likely to adversely affectmorale, a poor work-life balancewas seen as number one, ac-cording to 33.2 per cent of thosequestioned. When asked to rank “who

has the best work-life balance”senior managers came out asfourth, with only the boarddeemed to have a worse balance. The “wider workforce” weredeemed to have the best balance, followed by “junior managers”and “middle managers”.Janice said: “Considering we

questioned heads of HR andboard director level staff, the re-sults are based on their perspec-

tive. However, it does certainlyserve to demonstrate that seniormembers of staff consider them-selves to have a raw deal whenit comes to work-life balance. Is this due to the pressures ofincreased responsibility?“A considerable number saw a

poor work-life balance adverselyaffecting morale within theworkplace. If senior manag-ers experience a poor work-lifebalance, this can lead to stress, worry, lower energy and poorconcentration, which can thendrip feed down to junior manage-ment teams, ultimately having anegative impact on the businessas a whole.“Stress and lack of morale in

a business needs to be treatedat source. In order to keep upbusiness performance, seniormanagers need to maintain ahealthy work-life balance. Thispositive balance can then filteron to the wider workforce. Over-worked employees with no timefor their personal life will soonface burnout, so employers needto take action to meet the needsof their staff.”
