Parsha Question of the Week:
I WILL NOT REJECT YOU In our Parsha the Jewish People are twice promised by G-d that He will not reject them.
After describing the terrible difficulties that would befall the Jewish People resulting from their fail-
ure to observe Torah, G-d assures us that despite all this, even as we reside in the lands of our ene-
mies, He will not reject us completely (26:44). Conversely, in the beginning of the Parsha, as the
Torah describes the blessings that will be visited upon the Jewish People when they do observe G-
d’s Torah, G-d promises that He will then not reject us (26:11). What kind of a promise is that? If
indeed we are in observance of G-d’s will, deserving of all the magnificent blessings described in that
same section, what kind of promise is it that He will not reject us? And if we are assured that even
when we fail G-d will not reject us, then how can this same non-rejection be expressed as a reward
for our observance?
(Note: These questions were raised by Ramban (26:11), who in turn provides a very mysti-
cal interpretation of the verse. We remain concerned however with the verse’s plain meaning,
pshuto shel mikra.)
HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA SHIUR:
SHABBOS CANDLES FOR GUESTS & TRAVELERS III What is the candle-lighting obligation of a single individual who is a guest in someone
else’s home for Shabbos? If the person is eating with the host family and staying in an area of the
house where other family members are staying as well then the guest does not need to light Shab-
bos candles as they are considered part of the host’s household. If however the person is only stay-
ing with this family but is eating on their own, they are not considered part of the family and should
either light their own candles or claim a share in the candles of the host. Likewise if they are eating
with the family but staying in their own distinct area of the house, they should light their own candles.
It is common custom for a married woman to light her own candles even where she is a
guest in someone else’s home. Where should she light if she is eating out but will be sleeping at her
own home? Ideally she would light at home if she is confident that she can safely do so. It is neces-
sary however that she be there to benefit from the candles. As such she must either stay home for
some time after lighting, or light candles that are long enough to remain lit by the time she returns
home from the meal. If these are not options or if she feels it unsafe to leave candles lit at home – a
very reasonable and appropriate concern – then she should light at the home of her hosts.
