Jinasriia was hound to aeeopt KiilidiTsa's vor»cs ns ho found

<.f tho Jaina poem. Kalidiisa is thus made to sin<r iu his

p. 14). Thus Profes,sor Pathak's edition •'represents tho text
of tho poem as it was known to .linasena in tho latter part
of tlio oij^hth centtiry or Iwfoto Saka 705, tho duto of his first
work, the Jaina- llanvamHH, when ho must luive learnt tho
poem from the lips of his teacher Viraseim " (ihid., p. 1*)).
JinasfMui's date is only about a century and a half subsequent
to tho two earliest mentions of tho i)oot Kiilidiisn in the

Tunjur contains u 'libutan translation of ihe Mftiliinluta, which
lias been edited and translated into (Jernian by Dr. liockh
(IJerlin, IJHI7). The Singhalese v<Tsion includes seven and
the Tunjur si.K of the Kpurious verses.
The most recent contribution to the study of the MiijIiKdulu
is Paiulit It. V. Kt ishnaiuachariar's cditTTm of the I'ii/f/ii/ftifi'i,
a very full and learned c(»nnncniary (Sriranpiin, I!M>!i). "The
conuuentator, iianu'd iMrna-Saiusvali, seems to have lived
Hoino three centuries apo somewhere in the State of Cochin"'
(I'refatc, p. ii).

Hitherto the printed texts of the c])ics of Kiilidasa and
