Take a Trip to Athens, Greece in May
The month of May ushers in with May Day,
which is a national holiday full of parades
and various other festivities that all take
place on May 1st. The first day of the month
also brings about the Feast of Flowers,
which allows everyone to celebrate an
appreciation of the beautiful flowers that
bloom in spring by focusing on the ancient
roots with the goddess Demeter in one of
their festivals.
Later on during May, all of the ancient customers of the country continue
when they observe Anastenaria, which is a holiday that observes fire walking
over pits that are loaded with coals. The holiday is often celebrated near
Langada and Serres in Aghia Eleni just outside of Thessaloniki. Take one of
the organized tours to see all that the ritual envelopes.
In the middle of the month on May 18th, International Monuments Day takes
place. You can come out and enjoy free admission into all of the various
archaeological sites and museums throughout the country. It doesn’t get any
better than free.
Have you ever heard about the Battle of Crete? Well, in Greece they
commemorate it in a number of different places all throughout the month of
May. Around the anniversary on May 22nd, there is a major observance of
the battle that takes place in Heraklion. Many of the families in the area will
light a candle to remember their loved ones that were lost more than 60
years ago during this battle. It was an extremely dark passage that took
place in Greece.
During the last weeks in May, you can come out and check out the Medieval
Festival over on Rhodes. In the Old City, you can enjoy the annual flower
festival that fills the streets. Regardless of what the conditions might be
outside, the area is absolutely stunning. With all of the beautiful flowers
adorning the town, it brings a splash of color to the beautiful stone walls.

fluctuate from cool to quite sweltering, especially when the end of May
draws near. Above all, take the time to stroll through the country and take
in all of the different sites and festivals they have to offer in the month of
