The month of May ushers in with May Day,

which is a national holiday full of parades

and various other festivities that all take

place on May 1st. The first day of the month

also brings about the Feast of Flowers,

which allows everyone to celebrate an

appreciation of the beautiful flowers that

bloom in spring by focusing on the ancient

roots with the goddess Demeter in one of

their festivals.

Later on during May, all of the ancient customers of the country continue

when they observe Anastenaria, which is a holiday that observes fire walking

over pits that are loaded with coals. The holiday is often celebrated near

Langada and Serres in Aghia Eleni just outside of Thessaloniki. Take one of

the organized tours to see all that the ritual envelopes.

In the middle of the month on May 18th, International Monuments Day takes

place. You can come out and enjoy free admission into all of the various

archaeological sites and museums throughout the country. It doesn’t get any

better than free.

commemorate it in a number of different places all throughout the month of

May. Around the anniversary on May 22nd, there is a major observance of

the battle that takes place in Heraklion. Many of the families in the area will

light a candle to remember their loved ones that were lost more than 60

years ago during this battle. It was an extremely dark passage that took

place in Greece.

During the last weeks in May, you can come out and check out the Medieval

Festival over on Rhodes. In the Old City, you can enjoy the annual flower

festival that fills the streets. Regardless of what the conditions might be

outside, the area is absolutely stunning. With all of the beautiful flowers

adorning the town, it brings a splash of color to the beautiful stone walls.
