Welcome back to Term 2! Ashfield RSL ANZAC Service I had the honour of attending the Ashfield RSL ANZAC ceremony with a group of seniors during the holidays. Jordan Ddibya of Year 11 delivered the annual ANZAC address. His speech argued that the concept of unity is central to the ANZAC spirit and that this is as relevant to modern Australia as ever in light of events which attempt to divide us such as the Christchurch attack. Both Jordan and the school have been inundated with praise for the maturity, relevance and quality of the speech.

Year 12 success “speed dating” Year 12 ended Term 1 with their practice HSC mid-course exams. The results of these will be used by teachers and the boys’ success coaches to discuss areas for concentration and improvement. In addition to this I met with Year 12 as a group on Tuesday and have been meeting every individual in a series of “speed dates” to discuss their motivation, effort and plan for improvement. I haven’t finished this process yet – there’s 1 me and 102 guys in Year 12 – but I will finish this process early next week. One point that I stress constantly is that there are now only 19 weeks of the HSC course left. The boys have control over every aspect of their HSC except time. Year 12 is not a time when it is possible to “start tomorrow”. Parent and Teacher Nights We have already held Parent and Teacher Nights for Year 12 and Year 7. It was wonderful to see such a huge parent response to these. I urge you to look out for the remaining nights and book times with your son’s teachers. The boys always do better when home and school are on the same page. P&C Meeting The first P&C meeting for the term will be on Monday night in the Common Room starting at 7pm. As always it would be great to see you there.

YEAR 8 MUSIC
Year 8 students are currently studying the unit “History of Rock and Pop Music” where they are provided with an historical guide of music styles from 1950s to the present. Within the unit, students explore Rock and Pop music through listening, performing, composing and researching experiences.

SCIENCE Term 2 started with a look at mixtures for Year 7 students. Mixtures are all around us - air we breathe, water we drink, food we eat and to name a few more – rocks, cordial, pizza, sea water. Students had to work out different ways to separate mixtures and understand the need to separate them. Year 10 students got busy with developing an understanding about motion. On the first day they were discovering scalar and vector quantities. Year 12 students got their practice exam feedback and are concentrating on improving their writing ability. They have two excursions coming up in Week 5. Mid year exams for Years 7 to 10 will be in the first half of this term. Science Engineering Challenge is on next week.

PRODUCING GREAT RESULTS AT THE SHOW
Year 9 recently attended the Royal Easter Show to undertake Geography fieldwork as part of their unit Biomes Produce Food. Students investigated agricultural produce from different regions in New South Wales and Queensland, and were encouraged to talk to farmers about the challenges facing food production in Australia. Students also examined aspects of sheep and cattle farming in Australia. The Show is a great opportunity for our students to get a better sense of where their food comes from and is also a great opportunity for show-rides, show-bags and carnival games.
